Three of South Africa’s hottest artists will be performing at the MTV base World Chart Express VJ auditions. Prokid, Zola and Skwatta Kamp will make exclusive appearances at the VJ auditions over the next week to perform their hottest tracks for the thousands of South African VJ hopefuls who will make their bid for TV fame as the host of new SABC1 show, MTV base World Chart Express…

Sowetan rapper, Prokid, will make an exclusive appearance at HQ, Greenpoint, Cape Town on 20 August
Kwaito king, Zola promises to mesmerize the crowds at Pop Art, Umhlanga, Durban on 21 August
Hip-hop heroes, Skwatta Kamp will bring down the crew at Shoukara (off Rivonia Road), Johannesburg on 27 August.

Commented Alex Okosi, Vice President & General Manager, MTV Networks Africa, ‘The winner of our VJ search will be interviewing high profile bands and artists as a regular feature on MTV base World Chart Express. What better way to prepare them ready for their new role than by getting our finalists to see some of South Africa’s hottest music stars in action? We’re thrilled that Skwatta Kamp, Zola and Prokid are turning out to represent the South African music industry and to support us in this project, especially as they are the kind of artists we’ll be featuring on MTV base World Chart Express.’

Devised as part of the MTV base World Chart Express TV show, which debuts on SABC1 on 28 September 2005 at 06:30pm on SABC1, the MTV base World Chart Express VJ search will find South Africa’s first ever MTV presenter, with thousands of hopeful candidates expected to attend the auditions in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. Dispelling some lingering confusion about the search; Okosi commented, ‘It’s come to our attention that some people appear to be confusing the term ‘VJ’ with the ‘DJ’. Please be aware: it’s not mixing or scratching ability that we’re after, but ability to present on TV. VJ is actually short for ‘video jockey’ – a term that was coined in the early 1980s to describe the people who presented music videos on MTV, originally in the United States.’

Starting at 9.00 am on Saturday 20 August; 1,000 qualified VJ hopefuls in each of the three locations will be given the chance to shine in front of the MTV base TV cameras. Each potential candidate will be taken through a pre-qualification process to ensure their eligibility for the auditions, with all eligible candidates asked to present a short scripted piece to camera. MTV base judges will narrow down the candidates in the course of the day before selecting just one finalist from each city.

Doors open at 9:00 a.m. and auditions will continue until the first qualified 1,000 candidates are auditioned, and the regional heat winner is announced. MTV France VJ, China, will open the sealed envelope containing the judges’ decision in front of the assembled contestants.

Airing weekly on SABC 1 from 28 September 2005 at 6:30pm, MTV base World Chart Express will focus on videos burning up the charts in South Africa and around the globe, from music such as kwaito, hip-hop, R’n’B and soul. Hosted by our winning VJ, MTV base World Chart Express will provide a window to the South African and global music scene, with each episode also featuring exclusive interviews, latest news and celebrity gossip. Each of the finalists from Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg will be profiled in the first episode of MTV base World Chart Express and face-off for the title as part of the second episode to air on Wednesday 5 October. Our panel of judges as well as SMS and online voting from viewers will decide the fate of our finalists.
