The inaugural Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival will bring communities together through music and celebrate our South African heritage on 28 September at the Soweto Cricket Oval (The Elkah Stadium).

During a recent interview with Bra Hugh, as he is lovingly referred to in the music circles, he passionately spoke about music, heritage and traditions. Hugh continued to speak about his time growing up and the importance of ones’ heritage:

“A country’s heritage is kept alive by the community and it is visible that the South African society is one of the few societies imitating other cultures, especially American cultures. Our country, with so much history, heritage and culture, is being consumed by other countries’ cultures which, should this continue, will lead to our Heritage disappearing.

Before technology revolutionized our lives, weekends were spent with family and friends, attending theatre shows or a concert, outdoors.  Today, our lives are very different. The vision that is shared between Assupol and Bra Hugh, is to take families back to these times. Where a day is spent in beautiful surroundings, listening to the best music from a variety of genre’s – as our South Africa music industry doesn’t just comprise of rock, jazz, kwaito, house or “Afrikaans Boere Musiek”.
The long term vision for the Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival is to incorporate workshop classes, teaching South Africans, regardless of their age, the different languages, traditional dances and family praises, before our heritage completely disappears.
The Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival’s line-up was compiled by Bra Hugh himself.  He believes that the artists performing on the 28th September, represent and showcase our diverse (and always growing) cultures and traditions of our country; “Mi Casa is a youth hertiage group while Phuzekhemisi is very traditional but at the same time has an urban message and vibe.” according to Bra Hugh. This day promises to be a day filled with family, joy and music.

The Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival is presented by Assupol, Soweto TV and Jozi FM.
