Title: SAMA Debate on SAfm!
Post by: MaddStone on May 10, 2006, 08:30:38 AM
Did anyone happen to catch this debate or catching it right now?Its on the after 8 debate.Interesting insight into the whole thing, but also interesting views expressed from callers.I do, too, feel that SA needs another awards show of such magnitude as the SAMA's but with a different structure perhaps and looking at things from more critical perspective. Not just on popularity but the artform as well. And here I dont mean hip hop only, I'm speaking across the board.

Yeah,,, I have been thinking that for a while. In the UK they have the Mercury Prize which is a music award given annually for the best British or Irish album of the previous 12 months. It was established in 1992 as an alternative to the industry-dominated Brit awards.

They often uncover new talent before the general public even knows about an artist (they blew up Dizzee Rascal a couple years back).

I really believe we need something like that here. Popularity votes are cool and that should be recognised (as that usually relates to sales, and that's what the music industry is about), but we do need an award that recognises talent, rather than sales as the two do not necessarily go hand in hand.

No award is without controversy, but industry-dominated awards are always annoying for fans of 'real' music.

heard it this morn... & thought it again highlighted the infantile nature of South Africa's music industry-

for f*cks sake, it's bankrolled by the 4/ 5 biggest record labels & giving 1/ 2 awards to artists signed to indie labels doesn't prove a thing bout it's impartiality!

Thats totally agreed there. But there's always the issue of money that comes into play here and funding for such an event. It could be forwarded to the dept of arts and culture to see if they think it feasible. It would be great to really showcase the work of artists that wouldnt usually get that big play on radio perhaps but have them be noticed by the greater SA for their talent. In this way, creating buzz and possible record sales..........then building up the industry............which is sorely needed.
