again i say: ben sharpa  8O. think he was forcefully carried off stage after a polemic diatribe about the illuminati & other equally obscure & clandestine organisations

The performances in general were disappointing. Jitsvinger was cool. Even though I pitched up very early (free T-Shirt) I only saw the last track from this dude because by the time the show started I was outside chatting with the bouncer. Endz was boring, Eavesdrop got me moving on the hooks. Her hooks were kind of ok for a live joint. Big Idea were very entertaining. Big Ups to them! Writers Block mostly boring but finished off nicely.

Ben Sharper: This dude could have f***ed up the gig all by himself. He was on stage preaching illuminati theories and so on for about 10 or more minutes before every track. I’m convinced he was drunk.
-@Dplanet: the “It’s Just a Statement” beat sounded really nice on those club speakers.

Thanks to Nasty_ED, I had a great time after the performances. His playlist was dope! I really had a good time. Rozie and Nat made it even nicer for me though! Had a great  time on the dance floor with u ladies. :)

It was certainly well-organised, but for a number of reasons, it wasn't a particularly memorable night.

The sound system just wasn't good enough and mics were way too loud. There is really only one solution to this - HIRE A DECENT SOUND and a qualified sound engineer who understand how Hip Hop should sound - until we do that, the sound is always gonna be disappointing.

Jits and Big Idea started off nicely getting people in the party mood, but Endzi's set was the wrong energy for that time of night (no disrespect, but too downbeat, too heavy). Then there was a DJ set in between Endzi and Ben Sharpa - I always think this is a bad idea - people started drifting out of the hall.

Ben Sharpa is my boy, but he was a shambles - way too drunk to be performing. All the impact and entertainment he generated by wearing a full Apartheid-era police uniform (including baton and shades) was dulled by his extended drunken conspiracy-theory rambling between tracks. Thankfully KONFAB came out to hurry him into Statement (where Ben forgot his verse, and his part of the chorus). Writer's Block came out and bundled Sharpa off the stage before he could go into his last track. The crowd looked bemused. Rock n Roll I guess.

KONFAB lost his voice so he couldn't do his solo shit, so Writer's Block did the finale. They seemed pretty low-energy too, so the evening ended with a pop rather than a bang.

I think we need to find a better balance for the line-up if we want to draw more people into these parties. Personally I would always include Rattex and Driemanskap as these boys always bring energy and intensity. I would also have an extended KONFAB set. The DJs need to play more upbeat music too - the whole vibe was too low-key.

The turn-out was pretty good, but I don't think anyone is going to go away saying that they had an _amazing_ night. I know Julian put a lot of work into this, and I also know he is building for the future so big up to him.

I've just got to figure out where I'm going to have the Planetary a**ault launch now,,, but one thing i will guarantee is that the sound will be proper.

so i start at a laff. puuurfect. afterbirth. you are not allowed to do what you did to me bra. had me FLYYYYYYYING out of there. like huh. what. oh my gosh. no. seemingly no one is trying to be talking about it. tl tl tl.

cape town. saturday 31st march.

i had a good time. ive been in some serious need. and what a treat it is to just see everyone at once. what a whopper. joy. the usual characters. konfab. felehe. koosta. rearranged reality (i like to call you double r) finicky feisty. vernon. syntactic. maddstone (you were the surprise). hipe. dplanet how incognito were you (read: soooo didnt see you. and not for lack of trying. and now youre gonna get me into troubles. on loss of focus accusations) hello witness in silence

its quite interesting for me now. to be able to give testament for the difference between home and the city of gold. and i feel very priviledged to be able to tap into both. each has its own merits believe it or not. it felt so incredible to be in a space where like no one really gives a shyt. nobody cares. i miss that. just the integrity of the moment. the music. the people. and i was exposed. remembering. enjoying what ive come to know. and experiencing what i dont. jitzvinger/ the big idea (these kzn'ers rock. you are a big idea. do need to hear more from them - pity about the chilling at the back thing. thats the problem see. on some missing out on the dishing out of cd's)/garlic brown/eavesdrop/endzi. big up yourselves people. big up yourselves. youve got flavour.

nastie ed. you make the dancefloor my home. you know what time it is man. youve always. and do still. thank you so much for the jams. i want you to blow up so badly. you rock jo.

butan (haha - on some well thats your identity bra) and naturelle. i see your vision in its entirety. it was a good gig. a platform proper.

* I LOVE CAPE TOWN *

was a bit disappointed with the whole affair. but in honesty didn't stay too long after writer's block set... having convinced a few friends who enjoy mainstream hip hop to come along & witness the reemergence of cape town's underground this definitely wasn't the event i ought to have selected..

not only had konfab lost his voice, ther was also sum other ish we were going thru that evening. still thought that X & metabolism brought mad energy though...

wld have also liked to have seen the likes of driemaanskap out there..

have to give props to julian though. one could tell a whole lot of work had gone into organising this ish..

ja. i think this did contribute to alot of what was happening beneath the surface there. ja.

and i certainly agree with some of your a**essments dplanet. though indeed what stuck for me is that it was well organised. ja. those odds and ends one learns from after. line up sorting. the glitches no one ever sees coming. but ja. naturelle did carry it with the energy.

you can see what this can be. where its going. and i do believe that it can only grown into itself even more as a result.

I didn't see cats like Driemanskaap and Archetypes there. Emile there, I didn't see Lungelo and the spaza faction, I didn't see Emile there, Surprise surprise. peeps are always preaching about supporting and grwoing the scene but it all seems one sided...anyway...

I think the sound guy did a great job except for writers block somewhere there couldn't quite hear them.
I wouldn't say the energy was low I think there was a high energy with nastie Ed coming off prooooper!I  was just dancing for like 2 hours straight.

Brother Butan worked hard for this gig and it had its shortcomings but don't overlook the positive. The media presence, the enthusiastic crowd etc.

B. Sharpa needs to take some of his own advise. I mean come on, what a a disappointment... to himself more than anyone.

i'm not overlooking the positives, but you gotta understand the negatives if you want to build and move forwards.

sorry,,, the sound is not good enough at Mercury Live. i was comfortably holding a conversation with syn in the middle of the sets.

I didn't mean to suggest that there was no energy - just that it wasn't the type of party people are gonna come away from and talk about for months to come (like the Drudge Party). It lacked intensity.

I still don't think that just MCs rhyming over backing CDs cuts it for a live show. We need some live elements - even if it's dancers/ DJs/ live mixing of tracks or whatever.

I'm still very optimistic that the next 'Butan Presents' is gonna be bigger and better. Hopefully it will be Butan Presents Planetary a**ault ;)

B. Sharpa definitely needs to live up to his name too (but don't write him off,,, he's still the illest MC in SA).

Naturalle you Know that we support underground hip-hop to the fullest the reason why we did 'nt pitch up is because we were stuck in Gugs and the next morning we had to go to pollsmor to Visit Redondo but yeah we owe you guys an explanation but yeah i was so disappointed to hear that the perfomances were not off the hook coz the line up was fresh,  Ben sharpa he came to Gugz drunk as f*** coz the previous nite he was in the Jazz fest and he did'nt get a sleep at all.Sound is always been a huge problem that the Cape town underground is facing ,gig organisers should give out cotracts to artist stating what is expected from them so that if mcees don't meet the expetations then the contract should be terminated.I wanna say to Julian keep it up this was just learning curve for all of us.

Rules for Mcees

Be on time
Don't drink before the perfomances
Don't exceed the time slot you are given
Respect the audience
Rehease your set before you go on stage
Sound check is important

It was a great evening, acts didn't really give each other a real run but Writers Block stood out. Good support from peeps, I jus hope promoters continue doin their shows and keep their concept goin, I guess thats how peeps are gonna follow events.
Title: Cause why?
Post by: ILLprof on April 16, 2007, 01:32:36 AM
Thanx. Uno for being honest. Preference is preference but Writers Block stood out of all the performers. The audience called for an encore! Even if you don't like them or their music, just own up to the fact that they rocked the show! After they elevated the crowds energy, Nastie Ed sealed it! The same audience who enjoyed Nastie Eds' set is the same audience who showed Writers Block love. Don't understand how you admit to the one and not the other. You lying to yourselves kiddies.

Yo Chuck we got some non believers in here.   :)
