Ah yes, good point. He must mean the void that Proverb, Zubz, Tumi, Hakeem, Ba4Za, Slik, Godessa, Ben Sharpa, Nthabi and Konfab fail to fill. Must be that. Yeah.

Thanks my good friend for the enlightenment. I respect all the above named artists..but the hood representation is at a minimal...The trials and tribulations, the dreams and disasters of our lives. The sweet taste of success after struggling through the obstacles...the hustle, the pa**ion the glory the story...I listen to the music and right now nothing is really making me feel real special. Now it may not be in my best interest, to generalize that that's how everyone is feeling. I a**ume that we are all human and we want to know that someone has been in our shoes before and this is how they maneuvered out of that situation and created...something to think about...we cut the chase and bring you into the world...from soweto to jozi's flashy life, to the world that some of our members have seen. Enough talking let the music fill in that void...watch this space...check out www.myspace.com/neoshantyentertainment  .....www.myspace.com/pimpvillezone1 ....www.myspace.com/seanpages4president ....just a snippet of what our individuals artists have been up to...much love

Watch what you say, last time someone said something about the gay name, they were punished by making thm download and listen to a horrible diss track. I felt like crying. Not because of the diss, but because I used bandwidth for that shit.

On the other point. Are you a f***ing retard (why do I ask, its been established)
These are the people living exclusively off hip hop and making money internationally. Thgey actually get booked in Europe and North America. What have you idiots accomplished, besides play battles and albums selling less than wood.

Say things like that when you've actually accomplished something. there really is no gap for fake accent hip hop music, especially considering the fact that reall accent hip hop sales are dropping by the day.

regardless of what u think dog!
hiphop is still missing swag, energy, something that'll excite people, make em party to it,something new and fresh!
whether or not u feel we are the ones to fill the void(maybe it'll be a generation after us,who knows), the fact remains, the current guys are boring and stale.
thats why sales are dropping.
thats why NOBODY(record labels) is f***in wit hiphop no more.
thats why nobody is gettin signed.
hiphop in SA is f***ed right now, cos the current amba**adors are not living up to the hype.

the cool thing is, u say we selling WOOD. well, from ZERO to WOOD is an improvement! we movin UP!
But these dudes out now goin from ALMOST GOLD(first time around) to WOOD and below WOOD! they FALLIN OFF!

Do the maths!
The fact that u bought my shit says it all!
I got buying power even with the haters!
Thats a good sign!

You PAID for that shit? Are you mad?

No, he aint mad. He just really wanted to hear that album.
Why? Because i created INTEREST. i enticed him.
No matter how much he hated on me, he cudnt help but COP it!
Thats whats missing with the cats thats out!
Nobody is interested in Copping their albums! Theres no Buzz when they names is mentioned no more!

Please dont see this as HATIN or no diss. Im tellin yall what i see, what i hear in the streets! what we all saw at the SAMA Awards with that pathetic performance! what im hearin on radio, on these f***in forums!

Pyro is sayin it himself. Their sales are dropping. = Their losing interest from consumers!
Jozi is makin major moves, people are interested in Jozi! they are the HOTTEST thang out right now! They killin all them names mentioned here! jozi sales are goin up every week!
real talk!

gotta agree wit cash

as far as mzansi hip hop is concerned there is no swagger to make ppl run to stores.
ppl just aint excited about no artist from here coz cats rappin same old knowledge this knowledge that.

dont change your focus.

but hip hop is biznizz and biznizz means marketing.

imagine if washing powders didnt have glossy labels.

or if networks didn't brand their airtime vouchers?

^^ true dat. we need to get our marketing up to scratch, have u seen how america pushes their artists down our throats/ thats why we still buy more of them than local. not bcos our stuf aint tyt but cos thats wat we hear and see all the tym.

these AG cats always take it negatively when i speak the truth.
or express what i see is happening!
im glad others are standing up and sayin " Cash is right, we agree"
Thats what hiphop needs.
Pyro is a perfect example - he bought my shit cos i been marketing myself right here on AG. he dont even like me! but he copped the disc!
Sad thing is - I like Proverb, but i aint rushin to go cop his album anytime soon.
The last two albums i copped was Kanye n Fifty.
Do the maths, they marketing was tight!
the albums were tight!
the timing was right!
they created enough buzz!

Its not all about sales - but if u have a message to put across in ur music - the amount of attention u generate helps u spread ur message! thats the void these dudes are failing dismally to fill.
bottom line.
I aint hating!
but the truth is, MUCH MORE PEEPS is lookin out for MORALE than any of these cats who BEEN out!
Way more cats is lookin out for the Monopoly!

These dudes, the so called HOT cats got bodied by Flabba!
Meanwhile Jozi is makin real good moves! Competing with Other Artists from Other Genres! not jus limited to hiphop circles!

They actually bringin hiphop to the rest of the country(outside of 1970 - 1985 HEADS), as opposed to the Tumi's n Zubz'z who kwaito, house, afro pop, house, parents, younger kids, etc listeners would never give time of day! real talk!

we need a NEW ENERGY and vigour about our hiphop!
yall actin like them old a** geysers in the ANC! scared of lettin the young bucks redefine the struggle! yall still stuck in Apartheid mentalities!

I have this strange sense that im seen as the opposition on AG!
Im not!
Im on ur side! taking hiphop to the next level!
Arent u f***s tired of hiphop being overlooked and undermined!
If you are! Let me lead the New Era!
Let niggas like Morale, Koli the Kid,Sean Pages, K9 th Pedigree, Igho, Jozi...take this shit to new heights!
Let Proverb, Tumi,Zubz,Skwatta,Prokid, etc.fall a bit back, n guide the new generation by sharing honest and openly, the mistakes they have made and make sure the future dont repeat their errors!

Lets stop hatin on new cats for lookin fly(image wasnt so important then....the old cats made the mistake of not adapting to change, let the new cats embrace change!)

Lets not hate new cats for havin that swag(personality sells...the old cats didnt learn that fast enough! the shy rapper thing got played out! let us TALK our MINDS!)

Lets not hate new cats for havin more business savvy(contrary to popular local beleif, hiphop IS A BUSINESS! the old cats took it for granted,we cant repeat the mistake)

Lets not hate new cats cos they havin more fun(the older cats were too serious, when the music consumer generally jus wants to have a good time and party to music, not constantly be lectured!)

Lets not hate on Hiphop in America, Lets LEARN from them!(in any industry, sport, entertainment, business,etc...these guys are leading! we need to learn how they do it! only then we can do it better!) - niggas like sliqour are wrong when they say, their bastardised version of hiphop is more appealing to SA people, he lying! American hiphop is by FAR outselling local hiphop! No SA cat can fill up a venue....but ANY American Artist CAN! Lets stop lyin to ourselves and tell the new cats the TRUTH!

How about if we had a fair and level playing field in the form of SA music quotas?

This issue really makes my blood boil. South Africa does actually have a 25% local music quota but according to the South African Music Quota Coalition, it is regularly ignored, “due to loopholes such as playing local content in the early hours of the morning, non-enforcement, and being allowed to use gig guides and interviews to offset their quota.”

The government needs to wake up and realise that without a strictly enforced local music quota (personally, I think 70% would be good), they are promoting and sustaining a culture of inferiority around local music and creating conditions that make it almost impossible for our talented industry to grow. A quota imposed on our media would force the majors in South Africa to invest in our local product.

We have been conditioned to believe that ‘local’ is inferior because we are brainwashed by foreign concepts of what constitutes good music. It wouldn’t be so bad if niche music was being imported, but we are subjected to the worst kind of lowest common denominator pop music from overseas.

The local music industry takes the path of least resistance. The ‘big four’ aka the ‘majors’ (Sony BMG, EMI, Universal and Warner) are more than happy to keep subjecting us to this barrage of foreign mediocrity because it’s easy money for them. All the hard work has been done overseas (the slick production, the expensive videos and the marketing campaigns). They are simply maximising the return on their investment and who can blame them?

Total domination of our media is ensured by the fact that our media relies on the major’s content to survive. In effect, the South African media works for the majors. Impose quotas on the media and the majors will be forced to invest locally or die.

The foreign domination of our media also means that South African niche music is effectively marginalised out of existence, distorting our local music industry and killing creativity. Only the most mainstream and superficial South African music has any chance of competing and surviving.

The more effectively you copy the foreign imports, the more likely you are to gain acceptance in this paradigm. Just look at two of our most popular RnB singers, Danny K and Loyiso - they are simply imitating a tried and tested formula from the US.

When the majors do get involved with local music, it is often done with no vision or commitment. Look how ineptly Pro Kid, one of our brightest South African Hip Hop talents, was treated. Gallo half-heartedly marketed him (only producing 1 video for Heads and Tales) before putting out DNA, a rushed second album with even less promotion - no video, no tours and limited radio play (I still haven’t heard one track from that album). Pro Kid is now signed to TS Records, an independent label, where hopefully he will enjoy more success.

It’s a vicious circle of the most simple and effective kind. Our artists struggle to get their music played on radio or TV, therefore the potential fans don’t know their music is out there, therefore they don’t buy it. Distributors won’t support local music because ‘it doesn’t sell’. It doesn’t sell because people don’t know it exists. Only quotas will break this circle.

The problem is definitely not that we don’t have the talent. We have artists on Pioneer Unit whose music is played regularly on the BBC in the UK, and who have performed at Glastonbury (amongst other places). Influential radio DJ Mary Anne Hobbs, who has been likened by many to the legendary John Peel, described our own Ben Sharpa and KONFAB as “two of the most inspired and agile lyricists in the world today” yet neither can get their music played on SA radio because it ‘doesn’t fit the format’.

no. they getting airplay in the uk because they are hot, and because they fit within a niche that is established. a niche that is obliterated by majors and their lowest common denominator product in SA.

that 'techno' as you like to call it, is one of foundation sounds of hip hop. my sound is a direct descended from afrika baambaata. My name is even a homage to Planet Rock. 'techno' is actually black music from the ghettos of detroit - it may not be your thing, but only supreme ignorance could explain your sadly misplaced arrogance. Or as KONFAB might say, "you possess a false sense of self-importance, and you ain't SHIT." :)

Kaptin's sound as a producer is also rooted in the same tradition. I haven't forced him in any direction - he was on that tip before we even met. Same with KONFAB.

What is this 'pure' underground sound you refer to anyway?

Dplanet, now dude I hear what you're saying and I agree with it - for the most part. I do remember that you have mentioned the issue of quotas within South African music and, as I continue to do now, disagreed with you.

Yet, there is benefit derived from imposing quotas in the media - with specific regards to the music industry, one can't help but question what the unintended consequences would be. I do understand that there are endless frustrations when a B-grade international product is pa**ed off as something of any integrity, and thus insulting the majority of the consumers and undermining our own artists. Please be warned that I use the term 'artist' with a level of curiosity and caution. But as I have said in previous discussions on the topic, it does tend to go both ways. As long as certain people believe that this is the easiest means of making money there will be more harm done by quotas. It would be good if we could rely on the market i.e album sales to deter those producing an inferior product from further participation within the industry. That is a luxury we can ill afford. It is reasonable to see a mushrooming of 'local' procducers and production houses punting an originally South African product - of course all criticisms are to be suspended until further notice, we have afterall only just been allowed our voice as a trully local industry.

I also find it hard to agree with the idea that majors would have to adapt or die. They would readily starve the artist - and the dying would be that of the artist. Of course it is much harder to predict the outcome of such things. I do believe that if they are pushed, they can push back with much more affect. An alternative industry needs to be created under the majors - not above them or in direct conflict to them, nor to replace them even. As it currently stands there isn't a large enough network that can constitute this alternative to the majors. Yes we call companies like TS independents - they fail to offer credible alternatives. I tend to believe that that are 'majors' in the minors - a bunch of people with fluid business ethics and military insurgent-like advertising and promotion. They would ideally love to be majors but they are content with scrambling for the crumbs at the lower end of the table.

In essence what I'm trying to contribute to this discussion is that ultimately one has to be aware of what the results of quotas could bring about - whether intended or not. How does one hold the media accountable to a potentially restrictive concept? And is it as possible (never easy) as you make it seem?

Keep the hustle going Zee-Supreme. There is no music in SA right now that your
hustling cat who really has a f*** the law mentality can listen too.
We different like that...but yeah its all about whether people believe you or
they wana be you, thats the only way you gona move units, whether
conscious hip hop or hustler mentality hip hop! You really gotta connect with the
people. A lot of rappers here in  SA got skills but they fall short of the other

Molo, Dumelang, Sanibona, Hi, Hello, Hoe gaan julle

All I see and been seeing for a while is that there's no unity in S.A hip hop. People hating on each other or artists hating on each other for no reason. Not because of competition, just pure hate. As for me, I think I do understand what D and Cash been saying on this thread I value the opinions. What I do not get is why don't artist argue towards a solution, instead of arguing for arguing's sake. Calling each other brainless and stupid. As a consumer, and I speak for all consumers, especially the young kids who are influenced by the statements made on these type of conversations. My question is: how do you expect a 12 to 16 year old person to buy a S.A hip hop CD if you still calling each other stupid. Recall these people look up to you and you inspire some of them. So how do you expect them to continue do what they suppose to do. And for the adults who are consumers of simply good music/the general adult public. How are they going to buy S.A music. As for me, even though am not that clever, I wouldn't spend even my ten rands on a stupid person. Nah I wouldn't. And you wouldn't to.

As for Cash, I get the point of people stepping back. But I also think you should think about how you put your message out. Cos for most people, especially the fans of the people you saying they must step back, they become pissed off. As a result they respond with emotions. Emotions based on the fact that they a**ume you disregard their icons and that you may be thinking you are the big fish in the pond.

And finally, we as the hip hop community need to see hip hop as music. Yeah, there's a struggle involved. Yeah people need to be educated through music. And yeah, we need to keep the true elements living. But we need not to forget that it's still music and music is for the people. All people, not just a sub-culture. It's entertainment for everyonel. It's no island. Even Jamaica made reggae, not for the rastas and their country only, but for the global community. The heads need to recognise that. Or they need to be schooled on that. Like Teezer would say: we need to see our selves as part of the world.

How do we explain that cats like Konfab and Ben Sharpa cant get no airplay in SA but get mad play in the UK?

i was starting to be impressed. on some 'it' has a brain afterall...and then suddenly...the mask fell off...exposed...nig is stupid...wat a question...they only gettin madd play there because of their boy Damian...nothing else...

no. they getting airplay in the uk because they are hot, and because they fit within a niche that is established. a niche that is obliterated by majors and their lowest common denominator product in SA.

I very much agree with this. KONFAB and Ben Sharpa's sound is fresh and appeals to a very specific niche. In Europe, there are hordes of people out there who devote their musical life to finding the hottest new artists with the best freshest new beats out there. They simply do not accept mainstream music. When I saw Roots Manuva or any artists on Warp record label, it was packed solid. Same for all the drum 'n' ba** and jungle, it was amazing to see so many people coming up with their own new sound and being followed by people actively seeking for new styles.

As an observer, KONFAB and Ben Sharpa were down that road way before they hooked up with Dplanet. What about these deconstructed electro techno Sibot beats, or KONFAB's own production of electro influenced beats... Nobody is forcing anybody to go on any specific beats. What Dplanet has done is given them a platform through is beats to access a European platform who is more receptive to what their sound. How bad can this be? Don't you wish for all our artists to be successful, all over the world? What is wrong with getting airplay in the UK, especially when one doesn't get it in their own country due to very narrow-minded people...

I personally really enjoy the mix of influences they bring to each other, possibly one of the freshest most avant-garde combo out there in ZA.

I understand that it might not be of everybody's taste but that's why it is called niche. I personally don't dig copy of 90's jazz hip hop being served in 2007 but that is my personal taste and choice. If people are happy making this type of music, good for them. But in no way shall I impose my taste and choices upon someone else. I believe our artists will truly shine when they're true to themselves and make music they really believe in. As per Hype's new article on Ben Sharpa, I believe that is what he's set out to do: be true to himself. Love it or hate it.

Don't listen if you don't like... Or if you do, don't try to make everybody conform to what you personally think hip hop should be, rather find people who makes that type of music.

Peace,,

*spo0ky*

these AG cats always take it negatively when i speak the truth.
or express what i see is happening!
im glad others are standing up and sayin " Cash is right, we agree"

You know hes right, right!!

You really gotta connect with the
people. A lot of rappers here in  SA got skills but they fall short of the other
qualities......

Real Talk B....while ya were bickering.. Morale took No.1 Mixtape, Maggz took number 2 mixtape and that's just the half of the squad....Cash not listed... Young Zooloo school homeboy on the essence of humility. Know what we know and then play where we at...Otherwise, I appreciate the feedback no doubt. You keep hustling fam.

Yeah, but he's been living in the states for a few years now, so he forgot how to speak and do things that he's been doing for more than 18 years.

That accent is hilarious. Language acquisition takes place in the first five years of life. After that you can still learn inflections and stuff like that, but by the time you're 18 its too late, you'll always come across as a fake, especially to the natives, who cant place where you're really from, cos you sound like a retard with a blend of African, New york, Mississippi, LA, and Alska accents.

No, I want him to measure it in Rands. Like most other South Africans. The day it becomes 'all currency at the end of the day' is the day when we we are really in the shitter.

Bondizzo, very few people care what currency you're dealing in but yourself. It's the whole self-importance thing that has people mentioning what currency they deal in. I took the liberty of highlighting what I find to be the dumbest thing I've heard coming from a person who relies on the collective loose change of others. Okay listen here Little Tommy Tucker, if you carry on with that attitude I do not think the term Glitterati will ever apply to you. Play nice, and maybe some loose change will come your way.

So...the rap equivalent of Paris Hilton, then? Will there be a Stars are Blind (Remix) f/Zee Supreme and Morale on the album? Or is Paris herself a member? Ye Gods! Someone call OK! Magazine.

I respect the hustle. I even, to a certain extent, respect the musical ability. But I do not respect the name. I would be very, very embara**ed to utter the name Glitterati on my show - I'd have to mumble it or something.

Love what you do and do what you love.

Yo Monkey Boy  you f***ing with a new breed.  Aint no dick sucking here for record sales. That’s the problem with ya’ll, you used to broke rappers. Ya’ll think one should crop his believes for sales. I’m laughing at your shit, like what? I'm I supposed to feel like I’m being black mailed. If I don’t play nice ya’ll won’t buy my shit, shame …fall back cock sucker. Relax, I’M DOING THIS…the only time I cum close to what you called me, is when I put your chick in my bed and my Jonny Tucker (Tuck Her). Run along be happy I didn’t call your moms name.

Damn who would’a thought Wu Tang Clan, The Pussy Cat Dolls, Springbok Nude Girls or other weird names out there would be big?  You not clairvoyant stop playing Mr I know it all…

Listen here man, I am not a role model and I’m definitely not cut from no conservative clothe. I fight fire with fire, I’m no sweet rapper. I won’t say shit to please and I sure damn well won’t take back shots from fagots to up my record sales. I won’t abide by no f***en industry law or norms man. If you irritating me I’mo scratch you.  If I don’t f***en like you I’mo say it. My believes are preserved in this art and no internet junkie or major label or media house will change or dilute my creations.

What? Are niggers now self proclaimed record execs? Like “listen man if you incorporate a little Venac or change your name we would sign you” or maybe as a firm local hip hop supporter I will buy your album. Go suck a dick man, we don’t need your favors all we ask for is the love for our music. If ya’ll don’t feel the music, fine I can understand. But if you not gona buy the music cause of a name that you don’t like homie I don’t really give a damn about your two cents.

Its first the music- the music should touch you and get you into our vibe and the way we see things.
Second- the quality and branding of the music should further merit the whole package.
Third – talent and personality

I’ve gone through this shit. No wonder local  rap artists shun from flamboyance and star personality. You f***ers have tarnished the little bit of zest the artist originally had. What’s left of his corps goes on radio stations, humble as ever and monotoned. Oh no f***er I won’t kiss a** or play nice to sell records!!! This thing is not about selling records its about making world cla** music. Much respect, ya’ll are entitled to your own opinions but don’t get it twisted I can say what ever I feel no matter how grotesque my opinion.

Wow, all that directed at me. Having read it all - much to my chagrin - something tells me that you have always wanted to say something like that to someone. And I see now why it is that you've got a uniquely "feminine" pout  - you just love throwing girly tantrums. Is that your "Glitterati" pout for when the flash lights are going crazy? You're so cute.

So you care not about record sales - only the broke rappers do apparently. You are amazing you know that? And I thank you for taking notice of my girlfriend - I figure she would be flattered by your wayward advances. I had no prior knowledge of you having met my mother - it's a small world. Please stop trying to play at being hard and all manly and stuff - I don't believe you. To be completely honest with you I am so flattered that my little response helped you get it all off your chest.

I am even more amazed by how you enunciate what it is that matters to be successful - musically at least. But maybe it's just  me that has a problem with talent being the last thing you need - and that could easily explain so much. I always (being discordant of nature) believed that one has to possess a talent and then harness it to produce something of it - but then again this might not apply to you.

And finally, yes you may say whatever you feel but your opinion is far from being grotesque (your spelling maybe) - it's retarded. It's little wonder they say birds of a feather flock together, you and Zee are compelling enough reasons why people who share DNA should never mate with one another. Take care now.

I fight fire with fire, I’m no sweat rapper.

Mo for someone who seeks people's approval and them purchasing you product you doing a bad job,,, how you gon spit on the very people you trying to sell your shit to..what is lower? being an "under achiever" (to quote you) or seeking said "under achiever's" approval in terms of they buying the product you sell...I'd rather be an under achiever than seek an under achiervers approval.

SA hip hop can't progress to the level you wish it to for simple things like the attitude you MC's have thinking you better than the fans..I likes your niggaz shit but the "f*** y'all we know better" attitude y'all display is hurting y'all..free advise take it leave it makes no diff to this "crab"

In all fairness though, that attitude has always been around in hip-hop (devil's advocate, but what the f***). Yes, he's an arrogant twat is old Morale, but since when did that ever stop Kanye or Jay?

I don't like the music or the name, but you got to respect the hustle. Mo, one thing I wanted to ask, on Clips, yeah, where does the sample come from?

Yeah, I copped your album, but instead of making me realise what's hot, it helped me realise that you're just a bigtalking no-talent wannabe American. It also helped me come to the conclusion that I will never pay for anything from Cash or any Monopoly affiliates again, so yeah, thanks for putting things in perspective for me with your "hotness".

By the way, I mangaed to return it, added R125 to the 25 I paid for it and rather copped the Saiyan supercrew's album. Now that's what's hot.

I f*** second that! This website is doing nothing but f***in up a cats dream of success! We dont measure a mans Success by his car! Or his house but if he can afford that shit then why not respect it!

Think about it for a Second

Most cats fail to see the bigger picture, According to "LOCAL HIP_HOP" Cats like Ben Sharpa, Crook'd and thje rest are "KEEPIN IT REAL" Right?

Fine they perseieve hip-hop as they want it to be! If Sumone Like "Morale" "Xplicit" "Cash" Or anyother artist see's the gap to blow up and appeal to a Wider Audience why are they labled as "Sell OUTS????????????"

Cats think that "Keepin it Real is Dope" And what not! But do understand that as much as hip-hop is a music genre that we all love! At the end of the Day we all got to eat! And if I can afford the lifestyle that I want so the f*** what!

This Bullshit of labelling out cats who are real and who is not real and who is using abstract content is bullshit! "You do you and I will do ME!" Stay out my way and Imma Stay out of Yours!

Food For Thought?
Or
A Waste of Space!

Imma let you decide

This whole thread is bollocks i tell u, straight bollocks.

Cats haven't even posted their material/mixtape yet, they just announcing it, but already y'all coming down hard on them. Judge the music ya'll, judge the music.

All this ego-bashing/who got the biggest balls talk is played out.

I remember when i used to come to AG, cats upload a joint, everybody gives feedback, nyambo kicks some knowledge about the beat, somebody else gives their thoughts on the lyrics, all constructive criticism (even if it's bad), end of story. This is supposed to be a platform for us to build ya'll.

I f***s with Morale/Sean Pages/Maggz. And the name is cool ya'll. These niggas embrace muthaf***as with names like Papoose and shit. I mean what the f*** is a Papoose ? Really now. Sounds like baby-doo-doo to me. But ya'll f***s with him cos of the music right ? Double standards i tell ya.

Looking forward to ya'll shit man. This is real talk too, the mighty one don't ride no dicks.
Post 1 or 2 joints once ya'll done.

Keep on keeping on.

Cash you know I have always respected your hustle my nigger. It would have been really entertaining if you had your own radio show. You’ve got personality and that flamboyance I mentioned and cats will hate you till the endz of earth for that shit. But not to worry, once you got that swagger their bitches drop em panties like how these SA majors have been dropping rap artists b. Word!

The one element cats out here don’t get is, hip hop is a free spirit that’s never conformed to anything that’s out there. Early hip hop was never built on the grounds of sales or conforming to media or fans. Hip hop wasn’t right or wrong, hip hop has always been a prodigal genre that invented its self through radical expressions. Tupac had a defiant persona that epitomizes the spirit of Easy E. There are more arrests in the hip hop community then any other genre. Early hip hop was about amba**adors (mcees) of black communities representing their dingy shanties and hard life styles. Early hip hop was free thinking and uttered “f*** the police”. Early Hip Hop questioned and broke the norms and laws in the community. Conforming was seen as weak, shutting up and not being self was unheard of. Arrogance was only the surface that covers black pride and the greatest shield from racism God has given his people.

Media turned early hip hop into a multimillion dollar conglomerate. Generating cash flow and selling the hip hop community to the world.  If you visit the same dingy shanties where early hip hop was birthed, people are poor and the amba**adors (rappers)of  those communities are wealthy. Amba**adors now rap about money and sell this to the world. After the power and really caking it as amba**adors, the wake up call then hits them. In order to sustain this wealth we need to carry on selling records, then everything now is measured on selling records. The amba**adors are now in a critical situation; they need to sell records. The art is tarnished, personality is tinted and they now are rapping “ I need to sell records” to their fans. They quick to forget that their unruly aesthetics are what made them sell in the first place..

In midst of all this, worldwide fans are brain washed into measuring amba**adors by record sales. What ever happened to the talent and rebellious out bursts dripping with character? The very same elements that sold hip hop to the world. What ever happened to the dmx’s that slapped their fans for getting out of line and the Tu pacs that spat in media’s cameras. Hip hop is the mother of free thinkers and rebels with no cause.

Be free and speak your mind, don’t be a record label slave and sacrifice you for sales. For me its about showing my talents and representing my hood. If I have done a good job, it will show through records sales. I could break this down the whole day, if you’re a free thinker and have been a firm hip hop follower you’ll know what I’m saying… peace

Its one thing to be arrogant, but it is a hideous offense if its unfoundedly so.If you are here about your music, let the shit speak for itself, if its any good.I will never hate on Kanye and J...they can say whatever they like. i aint even mad at that retard Lil Wayne talkin out the side of his mouth...hes been in the industry mad years....gone...shot himself ...and come back. the same goes for 50....diddy said in 96 "10 years from now we'll stil be on top"  ....i for one didnt believe him, but here he is, im not about to hate on his hustle....and these lil scampies wanna showboat over what!!!! a mixtape!!!! who are you, it was only a couple of months ago your trak made that bullshit top ten on metro FM, and this is how you wanna act???? the sad part of all this is that youre in here speaking for other artists who are unfortunate enough to be affiliated with your knuckleheads. though, i dont know maggs personally, i have encountered him enough to know that while he is a certain kind of cat...and the kind of hip hopper he is, he is not an arrogant prick. that is why the likes of he and Prokid are well liked, even by people who couldnt give two hoots about hip hop.

the international market...or SA for that matter does not want to hear chickenhead replicants of American rap in 2-minute-noodle accents....that is why Zuluboy, Tumi, Sharpa, HHP ....and not half this shit....are touring England,Germany, Amsterdam, canada and what not  ...OSKIDO told you like 10 years ago...hase mo States mo

You Glitterati catz continue doing what u do.I respect how u push on with ur vision regardless of what people say.Trust me, I've actually learnt one or two things from you guys about pushing on regardless.Same goes for Cash.

Without attacking u guys personally, the name Glitterati kind of reminds me of 1940s American Cafe Society. If that's what u guys r trying to do then so be it. However, to my mind the name is a**ociated with sum old skool bygone American glam era. But if that's how u guys c urselves then maybe 4 now we don't undastand it and so keep doing what u do.Only time will tell.

I suppose people can say whatever they think about the name but don't get too heated about it.@ the end of the day only u know where u're going.

i wud luv 2 support SA hip hop like i support american hip hop but i cant coz the quality is just pathetic... u guys can fool yoselves & talk bout niggas perfoming overseas but be honest 60% of SA does not even know they exist... if i neva joined AG i wudnt know half the shit i know... all of yo'll have big heads & diss the same cats we c on tv namely morale(i am vid), monopoly ( please) and a few others like jozi, pro, proverb etc but the majority aint no where to be seen....

by the way this "american" bulllshit is getting boring coz not even 10% of this country listens to our  whack hip hop & rather the american hip hop... even our radio stations play american hip hop...

so to the new school cats keep it up i am 1 of the people who r tired of whackness & pips rapping in my langauge sounding like shit & expect to get props ngoba they rapping in zulu or xhosa or kombius afrikaans (proudly SA my a** 90% of this shit is whack)... & by the way heads i cant be wrong coz this is my opinion...

Can you honestly tell me that you think Driemanskap or Rattex are wack? Or that Jaak, KONFAB or Hymphatic Thabs are wack? As artists I believe they all have international quality. They might not conform to the typical US pop aesthetic, but that doesn't make them wack.

I agree that self-confidence is important, and that performers should have a certain swagger in order to be taken seriously. However, swagger is not just about posing in front of a Hummers, holding money clips or wearing Bathing Ape. Those are easy to replicate, superficial elements.

I agree with you that a lot of local music is not very good, and that people should not get props just for rapping in vernac. Personally, I don't blindly 'support local' just for the sake of it. However, I do believe that we have talented artists that do deserve support because they make dope music.

The fact that our radio stations don't play much local Hip Hop doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the quality of our music. Radio has to appeal to the broadest market demographic so they are not going to play anything too challenging, either aesthetically or politically. A rapper bragging about his possessions over a nice club beat conforms to simplistic mainstream ideology so radio are happy to play it.

Also, as I have mentioned before, Radio is beholden to the majors because the majors supply them with music. The majors aren't interested in signing or pushing local acts because they have already invested in international artists who they can just push into our market. It's called maximising investment.

One last thing; sounding American doesn't necessarily equate to success. That's like saying that if our local footballers started putting on Brazilian accents and wearing Brazilian clothes they'd be better players.

I'm not trying to make this an argument between the cats that rhyme in American accents and the vernac cats - we're all in this together after all. However, you should look deeper beneath the surface and differentiate between perceived commercial success and 'quality'.

Nothing wrong with hits, but there's a whole world of dope music out there that has nothing to do with chart success. Imagine a world where all musicians tried to replicate tried and tested formula because of the need to make chart hits? We'd lose the richness and variety of our musical culture.

You can make a living without making hits. I love the fact that there are people out there who actually care about the art rather than just aiming for the lowest common denominator.

Like I said, I'm not a music snob. All music has a time and a place. If I'm in a club getting my drink on I don't really want to hear Hymphatic. However, when I'm on my bike, riding on a mountain trail, The Age of Horus is perfect on my iPod. You might not feel his style, but you have to be very closed-minded not to appreciate the skills.

The bragging and banter is all good. When you've sold 1,000,000 units I'll be the first to congratulate you, but it won't change my mind about the quality of the artists I mentioned ;)

D, u are sounding real IGNANT niggga! u losin the whole point.
when i say HIT RECORDS, where does the FORMULA for BUBBLEGUM one hit wonder CHART music come into the conversation?

Commons Album Finding Forever had a lot of HIT RECORDS on it!
i dont think u view it as a bubblegum formula album. but it was no.1 on the Billboard CHATRS!!!!

Kanye's Graduation is CLa**IC - Cant tell me nothing is a HIT RECORD! Stronger is a HIT RECORD! Big Brother is a HIT RECORD!

50's I Get Money and Follow my Lead are HIT RECORDS!

When u say tried and tested formula, u gotta be specific. cos Kanye and Common have their FORMULA, which incorporates Commercial AND Artististic creativity!

U must be referring to the Souljah Boy "Make em Dance" Formula! thats not what i was sayin when i said HIT RECORDS!

Have u heard American Gangster, that was a FORMULA! and its the FRESHEST ALBUM THIS YR!

Chamillionaire got MAD HIT RECORDS on his joint! HIPHOP POLICE is a HIT RECORD!!!!

Lupe fiasco's Superstar is a HIT RECORD! He got the Highest numbers in SALES this week for HIPHOP!

These are good musicians elevating the art!
Hymphatic thabs is a talented MC! but he's a useless Songwriter, composer of GOOD songs! yes he can confuse u with BIG words. but thats not GOOD MUSIC or ART! its just WORDPLAY!

Driemanskap's Hamb'ibuza is not an anthem or a HIT RECORD! its just a nice track!

quote - if I'm in a club getting my drink on I don't really want to hear Hymphatic. However, when I'm on my bike, riding on a mountain trail, The Age of Horus is perfect on my iPod.
Now thats the difference between a HIT RECORD and a average track!
U can listen to Jay-z -ROC BOYS, Hard Knock Life, Heart of the City, Big Pimpin or Kanye's -Cant tell me nothing in the club, riding ya bike, chillin wit ya girl, watchin tv, on the block, in the gym. it has no specific time and place!
its HOT rgardless of the CLIMATE! it'll get u bumpin it,whether ur in a party mood OR jus chillin!
U dont have to be in THE RIGHT MOOD to FEEL IT! its jus BANANAS!!!
THATS A HIT RECORD! like Snoop n Dre's -Gin n Juice, MOST of Notorious BIGS work, Damn near EVERY OUTKAST TRACK! Swizz Beats fire on Touch IT,Tambourine,Drink n my Two Step,Gettin Bodied, Money in the Bank,ect.. T.I's - Big Shit Poppin,Bring Em out, Pac's - California Love, M.O.P's - ANTE UP!!! UGK's Players Anthem! The Game -One Blood, Timbo's whole f***ing catalog from Jay-z to One republic!!!

these are HIT RECORDS!

if u say music has its time and place, then i think uv solved the SA HIPHOP riddle!

Nobody will EVER be in the MOOD for the GARBAGE SA cats is putting out!
there is no time or place anymore for the likes of Hymphatic....his time and place have pa**ed. Yes, we acknowledge he got lyrical skills. CONGRATS! my lil brother got lyrical skills too!

South Africans have a GREAT musical EAR. they wana dance(Johnny Cleg, Mango Groove,Chicco,Arthur, Mdu,Boom shaka, Kabelo, Dj Cleo), feel emotions(Ladysmith Black Mambazo,Malaika, Revolution), get intimate(Ringo,Ntando, Danny K, Loyiso), fight the power(Lucky Dube,B.o.P,Bongo Maffin),be controvercial and sexy(Ma Brrr,Lebo Mathosa, Kelly Khumalo,Thebe), be spiritual(REbecca, Joyous celebration), laugh(Senyaka, Leon Shuster, L'vovo,Bricks), cry(Ma Brrr, Zola,Lebo Mathosa), attitude and swagger(Ma Brr(again), HHP,Zola, Kabelo Bouga 2 Shooz, SLiqour, Lebo Mathosa) with their music. This type of MUSIC always has a time and place!......notice the BIG HIT MAKERS are mentioned more than once!

Like i said Jozi are the only ones so far who are BRINGIN IT! Dance,Emotion, Swagger.
HHP as well!

All the artists u mentioned D are JUST RAPPING! if u talking ART, lets talk, songwriting, creating melodies, being able to express urself so that a 7yr old - 60yr old have an IDEA of what ur tryin to say. Making GOOD HOOKS! punchline BRIDGES! COMPOSING a RAP/HIPHOP SONG!!! beat selection and conceptualising in a simple yet complex manner! Creating the build up to the Climax in a song, like Tupac did! Striving to be FRESH and creative, like Outkast do!

Not the same old,
my rhymes are like.....
i come thru.....
my lyrics are like....
etc......
thats a FORMULA right there.
so if U look deeper, u'll realise whose really keepin it stale and sticking to a formula.
but this is the " Im a smart a** broke a** conscious MC keepin it real" formula.
if i had to choose one of the evils, id take the Souljah Boy formula anyday!
the point im making is, lets make HIT RECORDS! and stop this NO PROGRESS a** BULLSHIT! its TIRED NOW!

What about originality?

Jozi is a formula. It's a relatively successful commercial formula and I respect that, but there is no time or place in my life for such music. Sure it's catchy and I can remember the hook after one listen, but the same can be said for a TV jingle.

We need an avant-garde - artists who push boundaries and challenge cultural norms or music becomes nothing more than a cynical numbers game.

The commercial culture of popular music is driven by profit-fixated motives which are not the ideals of true art. True avant-garde creativity has nothing to do with the market-driven fashion and superficial stylistic 'innovation' that you are using to lionise these manufactured pop artists.

You cannot necessarily equate 'quality' with 'sales'. There are many groundbreaking artists who have shaped the course of the history of music who have never had a hit record. Are the cast of 'High School Musical 2' great artists because they outsold Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Nas and Kanye? Of course not.

There is nothing wrong with making lightweight catchy music that touches many people, but not all concepts can be reduced to simplistic rhyming couplets, catchy hooks and punchlines. Why should everything be dumbed-down to sell?

I am well aware of the primary critique of the avant-garde - that it alienates the ma**es and tends to appeal to the so-called intelligentsia - but our culture will stagnate without the innovation and experimentation that the school of thought that artists such as Ben Sharpa, KONFAB or Hymphatic Thabs represent.

You talk about being "fresh and creative", but you don't seem to understand that what this means. 'Freshness' is not about wearing Bathing Ape or having swagger. Freshness comes from innovating new styles and pushing boundaries. If all our producers are doing their best to sound like Swizz Beats and all our rappers are trying to emulate Fabulous, where is South African innovation going to come from?

Like I keep saying, I'm not a musical snob, but we'll never have truly great South African Hip Hop artists if all we do is copy tried and tested formulas and then congratulate ourselves when they sell.

Man this argument is wack!!!  ??? ??? ???

but on the real....Just do U and be real thats all one needs to do in this modern day....and to be honest swagger is merely the way u carry urself whether is being charismatic like say a busta rhymes or T.I to bein laid back like a mase or a scarface...its not wearing a bathin ape hoddie ( not clownin them hoodies i got me one too!!) or lookin like u jumped out of the MIMMS video its merely who u are and how u carry urself through ur music. and that doesnt mean u just sayin i got swagger in ur lyrics....in a clearly nonsensical manner like many cats are doin right now!!

anyways i respect all y'all! 1

again D, u bein ignorant to what im sayin!
i never said lets COPY! i was using them American dudes as examples(since they are the BEST EXAMPLES of SUCCESS in HIPHOP! similar to how Michael Jordan is the best example of BBall)
Theres a difference in COPYING a FORMULA and LEARNING from a FORMULA!
What do u think EDUCATION is based upon!

S.A cats have CREATED their OWN formula and have FAILED!
Ben Sharpa,Konfab, all these dudes, have ADAPTED a FORMULA as well! The school of thought FORMULA! its BORING AND PLAYED OUT! and it aint ORIGINAL either! KRS BEEN DOIN THAT! u claim theyre experimental and innovative, but ironically, these are the same dudes who stick to OLDSCHOOL BEATS,rap about THE LOVE OF HIPHOP all the time, scared to use anything but a SNARE on beats, STUCK IN BOOMBAP,refuse FLAT OUT to collaborate with other musicians in other GENRES such as POP, RnB, and EVEN sub GENRES of HIPHOP!

i think these are the guys who are REALLY stuck in a FORMULA DOG! real talk!

the only dudes who really did it CREATIVELY, i wud say are dead prez! their music was catchy AND educating! it was in the CLUB and REVOLUTIONARY!

Jozi for me, have shown WAY more creativity and originality than EVERY cat in SA HIPHOP in 07!
The proof is there! Look how they have stood out while the rest of us formed PART OF THE PACK(within the FORMULA).
U seem to have a problem with MUSIC being CATCHY. newsflash! yes! music must make u wana sing-a-long! listen to it over and over! have fun. party widit! and learn! Bob Marley did it! so theres no excuse, NIGGAS NEED TO LEARN TO MAKE HIT RECORDS while tryin to EDUCATE or WHATEVER they wana do.

ps. the cast of High School Musical are definitely great artists or great artists to be. they can ACT,SING and DANCE! and their still young and full of energy and OPEN enough to learn the GAME. These are the type of kids who gone be the next Michael Jacksons,Christina Aguileras and Justin Timberlakes and further into MOVIES,etc! u cant hate! STOP FRONTING!
its not ALL about rapping!

i aint tryin to get all into a whole argument dog. jus expressin another side of the coin. i try to live on BOTH sides cos life will never be ONE dimensional. same applies to hiphop!

You obviously ain't heard enough Ben Sharpa or KONFAB. We are creating our own genre. The beats combine influences from dub, electro, dubstep, reggae, techno and traditional music from Africa, China and Finland (to name a few). We are collaborating with international artists from genres you probably never even heard of. I'm the last person in the world to be stuck in the past, trust me. I haven't felt boom bap since the 90s. Go and search thru my posts if you want proof of that.

Cash, you ain't even listening to what I'm saying. I have nothing against pop music. It's just not for me! I don't listen to music that has been made purely to move units.

I have respect for what Jozi are doing from a business point of view, but they are a boy band with no musical depth. It's an obvious commercial formula; take latest dirty south beat, add one part Traditional South African sample, add two parts bathing ape rappers, add one part RnB singer = formula. That's my opinion. You might think they are the freshest, most original thing you ever heard, but it does nothing for me because I don't like pop music.

You can spend hours telling me how good Britney Spears is but I ain't gonna start listening to it. Same with High School Musical. My daughter has it on rewind all day long - she loves it because she's six years old and hasn't developed a more sophisticated musical aesthetic. Of course it's good in terms of pop music, but in terms of music it's garbage. And if you think Zac Efron can dance then you don't know what dancing is.

If your musical paradigm is based on making money, then naturally your idols should be people who make hits. That is not the paradigm I'm working in. I want to create a legacy of originality. I want to push Hip Hop in new directions and be in the vanguard. If you want to compare bank balances in 2008 we can do that too ;)

yeah. D. like i said. im not tryin toget into a big BOOHAA wit ya! jus expressin another side of the coin.
The fact that ur daughter listens to HSM is cos she ENJOYS THE MUSIC. u cant diss her by sayin NAAA SHE JUS STUPID,she aint Inteligent in terms of MUSIC. thats wrong man.

A lot of HIPHOP cats seem to also share this sentiment that PEOPLE JUS STUPID. these are the same people u want to buy ur MUSIC????
I enjoy the HSM stuff too! But i also appreciate the likes of Common and more conscious musicians.

I think your dislike of POP music is misguided!
How can u say u aint feelin Michael Jackson, Justin, Lauren Hill, Maraiah Carey, Timbo, Gwen Stefani, Akon. P Diddy, Jamiroquai, MAxwell, Jill Scott, Robin Williams, Mary J Blige, The Notorious BIG ,Nelly Futardo etc.... ALL POP STARS!
That dont make sense?
Yes, artists like Britney are WHACK! but they dont represent ALL POP MUSIC. there IS trashy POP, jus like there is TRASHY HIPHOP.

I apologise for my lack of knowledge regarding the music u cats do! but its not OUT THERE. its isolated.

With all the influences u mentioned in the music it shouldnt be far from the KEY FORMULA of POP music(taking influences from many different genres)....so its safe to say, u guys are actually in theory, doing UNDERGROUND POP MUSIC!!! ;)
i mean the same stuff that influences yall(dub, electro, dubstep, reggae, techno and traditional music from Africa, China and Finland),
i cud say are the same for Gwen Stefani,Madonna, Daft Punk and acts like Gnarls Barkley and Kanye West even. Thyre POP arent they?. :o

Guys, enjoy the rest of 07 and have yourselves a fruitful new year!

YEAH! CASH AND D-PLEEZY,BATTLE IT OUT ON NEW YEARS EVE,GET A LIFE GUYS! HA HA HA HA HA HA.Go to the beach or something

On a more serious tip Icant agree or disagree more with u guys,i believe delicate shit such as the way one sounds or wanna sound like, should come naturally n shouldn´t really be worked on, there´s sooo much shit to try but sooo few cats that dare
Art, regardless of what genre should be a reflection of the artists environment n surroundings, tho´ maybe influenced or inspired ain´t nothin like originality.
the problem with an awful lotta hiphop cats out here is that they try too hard to sound a particular way to appeal to some audience or meet certain standards, i swear i see an awful lotta fake a** local Canibuses, Wu-tangs, Company Flows n whatnots in these here parts, it´s like peeps´re convinced there´s sets of laws n regualtions to follow in order to sound "nice" n that´s not only where originalty suffers major a** blows but also where they´re wrong.
i could be talkin kak but i beleive that if only more heads were truer to themselves n went all out to break grounds n did more of what they feel instead of  what they feel could  blow internationally then i bet that, that “definitive sound” y´all´re talkin about´d naturally pop in right thru international eardrums as a breeze of fresh air "somethin with its definite global influences yet original"
n if u really look into it that´s exactly what Kwaito did n quite unintentionally, in other words, more naturally
when peeps like Talib shows up in SA he couldn´t give a phuck about some SA rappin cats rippin shit exactly like 1000000 others do in NY,  n that´s why peeps like Max Normal or Tumi seem to tour n get noticed n recognized overseas more often than dudes like Optical Ill or Proverb
only my opinion... Peace HAPPY NEW YEAR
