Post by: TATEguru v.2K9 on January 18, 2008, 09:58:51 PM
Just hrs away. Lets get it started.

Show your allegiance/ picks. "Rep ya squad"!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/africa/7185033.stm

I like:

Ghana as hosts even without Appiah.

also, cinderella stories I'd like to see out Southern African representatives the "Brave Warriors" (not to be confused with the REAL WARRIORS of Zimbabwe not at the tournament) Namibia & Zambia do some things.

Ole Ole Ole OLEEEEE! *blows vhuvhuzela*

Never thought I'd see the day D Planet aka Mr. ARSEnal rooting for Chelsea striker Drogba.

Cote D'Ivoire will be entertaining to watch. Lets hope they don't get complacent.

Any predictions for Bafana?

Tunisia Morocco and Egypt are quite constant 1 of them is gonna win this one.

Just look at this list:

Ghana
Guinea
Morocco
Namibia

Nigeria
Benin
Mali
Ivory Coast

Cameroon
Egypt
Sudan
Zambia

Angola
Senegal
South Africa
Tunisia

The only countries we can (MAYBE) beat are the ones in Bold and they are not in our group.

Shit my team Brave Warriors got murked by the Morocans, f***,.damn...Anyway its tha first game, My other team da Chipolopolo are collectin' 3 points against Sudan tomorrow. As 4 da Nigeria and IV Coast, the game's kinda slow, just watched tha 1st half and its not as anticipated, maybe Kanu will wake the :beep: up and create some miracles.
As for Bafana bafana ba mo masipeng against Angola, the best they hope 4 is a draw....

Sad to see Namibia get their a** handed to them on a platter tho!!! And with that said... Bafana is f***ed!! Re'nyele... I cant see us competin at that level.. its gonna be embarrasin..

That Nigeria Ivory Coast game sucked balls first half. Shit kinda got exciting second half though. Kalou's goal was off-the-hook, brilliant run.

On another note, im getting tired of people looking down on Bafana Bafana. They not the best team out there, but for some reason i got some hope in the boys. This is the best bafana team we have had in ages, and still muthaf***as can't even give some support just for the f*** of it. We aint gonna win the tournament that i know, but i expect the team to at least play with some pride and maybe score a couple of goals. For me they were impressive with the last two games, we just need a deadly striker to finish off. Yeah, yeah,i know, ya'll gonna say we play two weak teams, but still a win counts for something doesn't it.

One of the biggest problems with South African soccer is the fans. We don't support our domestic league, and all of a sudden when Bafana have to play a major tournament, everybody's got an opinion. That's the difference out here. English Premier, La Liga, Serie A, all of that shit, got major support from dudes out there, that's why their soccer is top notch. U think a player @  Black Leopards is gonna go out there and give his all playing in front 10 spectators against Big Vest Wits, while getting paid R5000 a month ?  If we all packed the stadiums a lot of shit would improve, only then can we talk about how Bafana sucks. When was the last time ya'll went to a stadium ? Support your soccer and then it will grow.

Good luck to Bafana. I'm crossing my fingers for ya'll, even if we loose, lets do it with dignity this time around, and prove that there's at least been some progress over the last few months.

when I was 7 years old in 1986 I watched Bloem Celtics lift the Mainstay Cup. I played provincial footies for the OFS in 1992. Ernest Chirwali was the effin man back then. They used to have personalities back then... now it seems like if you're not playin in Europe .. you aint worth a shit. Which I disagree with. Admittedly I've only kept up with buffoonery buffoonery throught the media.. but if the scorelines are anything to go by....  :-\
I was in Botswana last year when Bots kicked our a** and had to bear the brunt of all my Bots peeps telling me 'we fell off'.. I couldnt really disagree... But I watch with bated breath.. I couldnt even name you 5 dudes in our squad.. so maybe my support would be cloaked in false patriotism...

That was the first mistake...

What sort of retrogressive thinking is this? you can't  admire without degrading others? have some fukkin pride already. and yet only the "darkies" show up in the world cup...hmm. They prolly would be on some malta level..or faroe island

smh sadly the Egyptians might prolly not even think themselves as Africans.

Cameroon were outcla**ed... thats just what happened.... I mean.. 3 goals in the 1st half cant be a fluke right? Plus dudes are the defending champions.. so yeah.. props due..

Why in the phuck would anyone suggest they compete in Europe as an African team tho?..
I know you highlighted the I think part which makes it your opinion... but c'mon mate.. the name says AFCON as in African Football... lol at Tate relegatin' your comment to 'dumbest sh!t' status..  :D :D

This is football ya'll. No one expected Cameroon to be outcla**ed the way they were right ? So why can't we expect Bafana Bafana to do well tonight ? They been playing well, won their two friendlies, news from the camp is that the boys wanna do well and confidence levels are high.

Even if we don't win, it's still all good, as long as we play well.

Can't wait for tonight.

I agree MrC.. I think its been underdogs so far in a strange kinda way. Nigeria were said to be the favourites..lost. Everyone thought Camerron were favourites when the game started yesterday...lost.. So yeah.. that isnt far fetched.. Who's our top striker though? Since Benny decided to middle finger us (none)..
Title: Re: AFCON 2008
Post by: MrC The Rap God Almighty on January 23, 2008, 10:08:28 AM
That's our only problem right now, we don't really have a consistent & deadly striking force. Zuma can be lethal on some days and so can Katlego Mphela. Carlos just needs to stop playing with 1 striker upfront. Start with a balanced 4-4-2 formation and adjust as the game goes along. In the middle we got Pienaar, Bryce and Teko Modise, who i think are all capable of scoring. We shall see though.

I TOLD YA"LL NIGGAS !!!!!

This is the best Bafana team in a long time and will continue to grow in leaps and bounds.Come 2010 we should have a solid squad. Angola didn't even deserve to draw, that was our game, from start to finish. Most of the chances they had were mainly due to mistakes on our side which definitely need to be rectified. Terror did well, Carlos should really start looking @ playing 4-4-2 from the get-go. Defense still needs some work, clearly we need to score more goals, but overall i was impressed with the boys. We gonna ma**acre Tunisia. They not looking too sharp.

Check how everybody who wrote us off is gonna start jumping back on our DICK. But locals fans still disappoint me. Been listening to a couple of morning shows on the radio and everybody's complaining. That's all we ever do,complain, complain, complain. Show SOME LOVE to the BOYS YA'LL. They did well.

Agree with Mr C on the formation issue! 4-5-1 was only good for us in the days of Phil Masinga, where we had midfielders feeding off him!
4-4-2 wud be more positive.

Watch the Ghana games to see packed stadiums. No need to pay for tickets if neither of the teams you support are actually playing...might as well watch that ish at home. Like MrC is trying to highlight, there is a serious crisis when it comes to SA fans supporting football. I mean people arent even willing enough to watch the games in the comfort of their own homes let alone travel to watch the games live.
Good game SA. Deserved a win though.

It's very scary for 2010 that people can't be bothered to turn up to watch a game like Nigeria Vs. Ivory Coast - teams that boast some of the best players in the world.

You're lucky if you can even get a ticket for any of the Euro final games, even if it's Belgium vs. Poland. They have to organise 'fan parties' where they show the games on giant screens to accommodate the excess fans.

I've been to a lot of games in Cape Town and sometimes there's no more than 300 people in the ground. There's also the sad sight of Pirates or Chiefs fans outnumbering local fans when they come to town.

On the bright side, at least I'll be able to get tickets to all the 2010 games :)

That indeed was a good game, I think this Bafana team's got potential to win the cup, coz in the 2nd half they were a better team than the Angolans. Where the eff is Benni and Fortune at when they are mostly needed?, on this continent the best strikers are Drogba and Benni, once they get the ball in the 18 area count in as a goal. SADC teams ain't doing bad so far, with the exception of the Brave warriors :( .

Who ever thought Guinea would emerge victorious agianst Morocco, especially after their Captain was sent off. I just like it when underdogs upset the big guns, this ladies and gents is the nature of soccer, in 90 minutes a lot can happen.
Hope this works the same 4 Chipolopolo when they face the Lions of Cameroon Saturday, Atleast we shud hold 'em up to a draw.

those goals where outta this continent, I think Egypt shudn't take part in AFCON and instead compete in the Euro, coz they soccer is way beyond the other darkies of the continent.
Backwards-a** thinking. This is possibly the most regressive thing I have read all year!
I hope you are joking,...right?!

or should I get out the "Dumbest thing you ever read on AG" thread?

Say what u wanna say, call dat stupid or whateva, buts that's what I feel about the way the Egyptians play the game, so if I offended y'all Afrocentric peeps too bad, y'all shud improve y'all game.

azanian souljahs,

kinda had to say something, for the sake of poitical correctness!!!
Them arabian descended egyptians are playing some great football, but to make racial comments like "darkies" and so on implying that egypt plays better football because they are of a different race, pigmentarily close to them europeans hence they should go join that league, coz it plays the best football based on skin tone not footbal skill?????
truly, i don't see no arabian team making way in the world cup with dem europeans for that matter.
Frankly, stick to football, appreciatate a nation for its game not its ethnicity.

aluta continua :D ::) ;)

i didn't watch the whole game but i have to give props to namibia - what up nat!

if only their strikers could hit the target they could have won that game. i saw at least 4 occasions where they ripped ghana apart only to blaze the ball wide with a wild shot.

after working on every game thus far i must say this is the best afcon eva(4 me). the goals tht r scored r of top quality and this something the afcon lacked( gud goals) in a way African football has grown big time....

with regards 2 Bafana lets be honest those kids dont hav enuf experience 2 beat the like of egypt etc. but 1 thing is 4 sure these kids r brilliant & if u thing we wont qualify 4 the 2nd round of 2010 then u in 4 a suprise. our coach is on the right track & theres a reason he did not take the so called big boys to ghana(benni etc). i was rather impressed by the  Bafana's 2 games. they palyed well but did not score.... watch my boys grow to men. i might be sad tht we might not go any further in the afcon  but the teams is gwtting there.....

Springboks were beaten 49-0 by australia in the 2006 Tri-nation now they world champs

in a way sa football is suffering the same thing as sa hiphop. we are failing to adapt to change! we still wana play diski but the rest of africa is now playing european football! we are not developing our players PHYSICALLY, we are not developing our players MENTALLY.
the only thing we are doing is changing coaches like underwear.
carlos has to stay till 2010 and maybe longer, but the youth development must allow him to groom players for 2010.instead of expect him to use the current squad and perform miracles with kak players!

sa football must grow now into sa EUROPEAN football.look at countries like ghana, senegal, nigeria etc.these are african EUROPEAN teams! lol

You kidding me right ? Far behind ? We right on their doorstep. Maybe our defense yeah, i can give you that much. Was i watching a different AFCON ? I would even go as far as saying that we were the best team in our group, play wise. Yeah we made a lot of mistakes in the back and we didn't score goals, but everywhere else we played very well. Shit we were better than the Nigerian team overall.

When we played Angola - That was our GAME. Again i say it ,Palencras Negras my a**. We should have won that one.
When we played Tunisia - We f***ed up in the beginning, tried to recover, it was a bit too late. Second half we dominated those muthaf***ers.
When we played Senegal again, they were nowhere to be found. We were all over them, but unfortunately again we couldn't score. Senegal is a strong team BTW.

This was a team that wasn't given the slightest of chances, and we ended up being a force to be reckoned with in our group, IMO. Maybe we needed more luck, i don't know, but in terms of playing ? Those boys played their hearts out and im happy with that. Let's build on it and hope they don't loose the momentum and we gonna have one of the best teams on the continent i promise you.

I think it is EXACTLY this ^^^ kind of attitude that kills the entire SouthERN African region's football.

Players from in & around the region get lured to the PSL as it is the most lucrative league.
They get showered with accolades & congratulated for relatively mediocre achievements (ahem like celebrating a DRAW and finishing bottom of the group in AFCON!) and sit back delluded that they are "playing their hearts put".

Once in the PSL payers never explore their full potential and are doomed to mediocrity. Their national programs suffer as a result. Just look at all the Zimbabwean "stars" in the PSL's peformance once on the national stage.

We need to aim higher!

Aside: Today we support our Sub-saharan brothers as they take on the North Africans.
Come on Cameroun & Angola!

It's not suprising though - every one in the Ivory Coast team (apart from their 3rd choice goalkeeper) plays for a top European team (Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona, Sevilla, Tottenham etc), whilst 50% of Bafana Bafana play in South Africa.

This does not neccessarily mean a country without layers in these leagues should do badly. (off course I recognise that the standard is higher at Arsenal, Chelsea, etc0. take Egypt (the current champions). most of their players come from 3 or 4 teams based in Egypt. (Zamalek, Al Haly, etc). they still do well  against countries with players in the top leagues in the world. therefore, it is possible to have a good squad based on local players. the issue for me is the standard of African leagues. Ivory Coast does not have a league as good as Tunisia or Egypt's, thus they prefer to send players overseas. Fact is Egyptian & tunisian teams tend to do well in African Championships & that helps at AFCON. in SA, we dont take these cups seriously, hence our local players dont fare as well as they should. When was the last time Chiefs or Pirates competed in these continental club competitions?

i agree with D, that we have problems in every department. everyone says "our problem is at the back ... oh and finishing, upfront" that's it. we dont defend well and we dont attack well. the midfield is partly to blame in the weakness of both departments. (not giving the defence enough cover & not penetrating in the last part of the field. think about it, we only play well till we are close to opposition 18 yards area. from there we tend to run out of ideas and subsequently we rush things and / try to dribble our way into the net. I  thin k this is a tactical issue., coz we've got the skills. it's minor things like moving off the ball, releasing it on time, etc. I think we have a long way to go, but this team can only get better. i really thought we deserved better than 2points. our tactics were just wrong (e.g. why play with one striker, when we have a goal scoring problem?).

HOLD UP NOW !!! How does the PSL all of a sudden come into what i was saying about Bafana's games @ AFCON ?. It's a shitty league for the most part,a lot of talented players, a lot of money, poor administration, no real development structures, very little support from the fans, etc, etc. How do my comments about 1 TEAM (Bafana Bafana) suddenly translate into some sort of attitude problem that the whole of Southern Africa suffers from ???? That's a whole different topic and has nothing to do with my comments about Bafana.

I was hoping this wouldn't spill over into the politics of the game, seems like that's where it's headed,so me,myself and i, we all pledge to focus on the matter @ hand here - The 3 games that Bafana Bafana played. I am of the opinion that they played well, i have not seen a Bafana Bafana team that showed that much heart and spirit in a long time. Even the 96 team did not play with that much heart, they actually had it a bit more easy cos they were playing @ home. Before that they used to get slaughtered as well. So what's wrong with me highlighting some of the good parts of our play ? We lost, fine. But we lost with some dignity  this time. We played till the last minute, unlike previous Bafana teams who lost without as much as putting up a fight in their games. Isn't that some progress ? Somebody please ,tell me u saw some sort of spark that i saw with these new boys ? That's what i am concentrating on here. f*** the NEGATIVE bullshit cos it's never gonna get us anywhere. Show love to your TEAM, WIN or LOOSE. Dudes never even watch regular Bafana games, they just watch them @ AFCON, and when we loose all of a sudden everybody's got an opinion.Where the f*** u been @ ? Parerra past his prime ? So what now we want another coach ? NIGGA PLEASE. Dude went there with a young team and he made it clear that he wanted to give them the experience of playing in big tournament which he did. We scored 3 goals, and had two points even though we still came last, we were better than 2006. Isn't that progress in a way ?

I aint blinded by patriotism. Im a patriot no doubt, but im also objective. We played well in my opinion, that much i saw. If we played kaak, i would have said we played kaak. What do i have to loose ? Im done here.

I was referring to the comment DPlanet made about the fact that 50% of Bafana Bafana players play for SA teams. I was highlighting the fact that having a great team does not necessarily mean your players have to play for top European leagues. A strong local league is also important. I used Egypt as an example. They have few players in the top European teams (think about it, which Egyptian player is a star in a major European league in the same way that the likes of Eto, Drogba, Benni McCarthy, Essien, etc are? Yet they are the current champions & advanced to the semis last night).  I then said Egypt’s foundation is that they a strong league and their teams take African club championships seriously – these are used as building blocks for AFCON tournaments, WC qualifiers, etc. Whereas in SA we don’t take such tournaments seriously and we all moan when we lose against African teams.

An ARSEnal-esque blunder bundles Les Elephants out of the tournament.

Egypt looking good. Nevertheless we root for our Sub-Saharan Braddas The Indominable Lions of CAMEROON now.

done happened, Egypt vs Cameroon, Cameroon are done Egypt on fire. they beat the the two biggest teams on the continent and scored four goals against both. Eto suffering from fatigue and when he has the ball thats the only time they look like scoring as for R.Song, that zidan kid is gonna send him to the cleaners. Mighty pharoahs to prevail

Eish.. Not feeling the Arabs too, they really cant take it again...

The majority of North African's i've chilled with have always denounced the African continent and have adopted Mediterranean heritage, so it would be hard for me to ever root for Egypt, Tunisia or Morocco, in an Afcon context. But i do support em in the World Cups.

Yesterday the Ivory Coast played just like Bafana did throughout this tournament. Mistakes at the back, missing chances at the front, but overall controlling a lot of the game. Does that make them a bad team as well ?

No,,, the Ivorians are a quality side, they just had one bad game. Bafana Bafana are not a quality side and they didn't play one good game. There is a subtle difference there ;)

Firstly, Arsenal are top of the Premier League largely thanks to Eboue and Toure who rarely make mistakes. Kolo did make a terrible defensive error yesterday, but he has been great throughout the tournament. If Drogba had actually scored one of the many chances they created yesterday, things might have been different.

You have to give it to the Egyptians though,,, they were clinical. None of them look tired either, unlike Cameroon who look like they have given everything already. Should be a great game.

Why all the North African hatred people?

It is very interesting to note that there are few people who understands soccer but want to give an expert opinion. We are always reffering to the years gone by like 1996, 1998 e.tc. The fact of the matter is, the game keeps on changing and advancing. And the nations that are not moving with the changes get left behind. Western african teams have done well in that regard.

Teams like Ivory coast, Nigeria, Cameroun, Ghana etc all have big stars playing in the most competitive leagues in the world. and when i say playing i mean literally. And all this does not happen overnight. Just three years back or so S.A could beat ivory Coast , Ghana etc with ease.
Now lets ask ourselves "what is it that they afre doing differently compared to us. Lets take ivory coast for example, most of their players were developed at Asec mimosa, then exported to some less competitive countries in Europe. They get used to the systems, philosophies and the modern way of playing soccer, then they move to the big teams in the most competitive leagues. And by that time they are well developed and mature in their approach of the game. They dont just wake up and find themselves in the big teams and being part of the starting line up. ITS A PROCESS.

The S.A COACH does not have the luxury of selecting from a pool of Well groomed and developed players playing for top teams. And he has to produce a winning team in a very short space of time. And what does he do, he improvises by taking young inexperienced palyers to a big stage. Where they get to play against seasoned campaigners. Needless to say some of thos youngster are going to choke and be over whelmed by the stage. But the fact is we dont have time, they have to be rushed and hopefull they learn and learn very fast.

Yeah man the best team won, the Lions didn't deserve to lift the trophy, their strength didn't reflect throughout the whole tournament, most of they victories were not convincing that they are champion material. Big ups to Egypt, they were fire from the word go, relied on home based players (Majority of them) which was a winning formula.

Y'all sub-saharan countries shud stick to Rugby, Cricket, Swimming, etc ( for those that are good at the afore-mentioned sports). The rest of y'all, figure out y'all's talents or skills. ROR

Well done to Egypt, they deserve it. The commentator on SS3 ( i think it's Mamadou) raised some very important points yesterday about DISCPLINE and Egypt have that in abundance.
