havent seen the mag yet but having 2 local covers in a row is a sign tht maybe things r changing. it is rather unfortunate tht our hip hop is not getting any betta. i respect everyone hussle but i cannot respect the standards of our hip hop coz 4 some apparent reason niggas is not stepping up their game & create hits...all i hear is not gud enuf & i pray tht every mcee pulls up their socks coz SA hip hop is like our soccer, with all the resources but wackness looms... fortunatly 4 Bafana they playing well but not scoring, our hip hop does not even have a team but pips is riding on hip hop's dick.... best of luck to all of u hope this year our hip hop moves forward.....

loved the cover! Jozi deserved it!

But everything else was VERY UPSETTING!
The mixtape was a slap in the face for all cats tryin to get in the game for me. Theres too many hungry cats in the game for ready d to get so many slots on the mixtape! no disrespect to D, but he got the resources to do his OWN mixtape.
So if HYPE aint helpin cats come up with their mixtape, then what is the mixtape really for? im jus speakin as a disappointed comsumer.

Most of the articles were ANTI HIPHOP.
Why hate on T.I(while the rest of the hiphop global community is showing support?)
What was with the focus on Jozi's mistakes rather than achievements! i wanted to know more about their international moves, how they took over the game and how they prepare for their killer show and more about their success!
It seems the interviewer was just fixated on the Crazy Lu shit!

Why was there so much focus on the negative shit in hiphop. ie. Who got sued, who got hospitalised, and the usual article where they try to f*** a nigga name up Rick Ross vs Rick Ross(those are the articles u usually see posted on christian websites and anti hiphop sites)where they tryin to promote that hiphop stars are frauds or fakes? Then the reveiws,90% of the shit said in the reveiws is negative(not all their fault,a lot of SA releases are GARBAGE!)

But i just felt after reading through the whole mag that there seems to be this sinister agenda in the media in portraying the hiphop culture as fake, negative and not FOR south africans.

there was some good stuff in the mag, but it seems that the negatives are starting to outweigh the positives.

The mixtape was VERY DISAPPOINTING!
i might not even double up next issue. i felt rob-one'd! ;)

naw, i aint mad. jus feel winded(kinda like when u get drop kicked in the chest n u outta breath). but luckily i always get back in the ring no matter what! ima fight for this hiphop shit till the death!
wadup morale!!! i see u!!!!!
it aint nothin playa, u gon bounce back wit a iller ride no doubt!drive faster! hit more chicks! piss more niggas off cos they aint built like u!

f*** it ima still double up! its that super jik nigga! that white!

Yeah man there is too much useless shit in the mag,Y sue T.I when he aint neva gonna see that page, that page could have bin used to promote a new artist. N I wont even get into the break beats shit, I bet you that the majority of Hype consumers can't breakdance, so y the f*** are dem break beats der for, Mizi could have launched 5 new rappers careers. Like I always say Hype needs competition coz it seems as if they relaxin now. But the cover was dope as f*** though

to be fair tho, its up to these(us) up n comin artists to create enough buzz that its IMPOSSIBLE to be overlooked THROUGHOUT the media! HYPE isnt the only publication u can get on! but HYPE should be the CATALYST for cats to get on the Ma** MEDIA!

Its all good! yo K9, i jus finished compiling the tracklist for the mixtape! its BANANAS!

everybody with a mixtape out or planning to drop better push it back n take notes! we bout to do it REAL BIG!

atleast the cover has local artists... we must remember that not all headz go an cop shyt
so for the magazine to sustain, it somewhat needs pop and rnb peeps to cop it... in this way it will do the mag good... and it's great that the content isn't on the same steez as the cover..

GOOD THINKING MIZI!!!!

Yo,

I apologise for not putting this post up as per tradition...
We just moved to Parkview and have been off line since the move. Thank you for keepin it alive though.

Now, lets get into some immediate business. Jozi on the cover. Jozi is the hardest working, most committed and as a result, most successful group in the country today. As much as alot of us in this forum may not bump their tracks, they are felt nationally. This is as a direct result of their work ethic. No other group in the country can claim that or take that away from them right now.

Cats in SA like to run their mouthes, but never back it up with action. In the States, where there is a strong industry, cats run their mouth then counter what they consider wack with new music. Thats why theres an industry there. When an upcoming artist disses an established cat, he does it with his own complete album in hand. As you listen to him running his mouth, he's handing you his disc and taking your money. Wu Tang was tired of that soft, happy rnb rap they were seeing on TV, Mags and hearing on the radio. So what did they do? They countered it. They came out with Tims and swards on videos, and put that on TV, radio and print. It didnt end at them running their mouth about the Fresh Princes, MC Hammers and Heavy D's, they countered it and became as big as them, using a style that was complely different. So, if you have anything to say about Jozi, do exactly what they did. Follow their exact same pattern, but replace their music with the music you consider to be proper and anti-pop. Until then...

The covers... Always a tricky game. Ben Sharpa cover followd by Jozi. That is a complete 360. From deep underground to extremely mainstreem. Thats an inspired move right there. I would think smart cats would realise that it is an attempt to display the entire SA hip hop landscape fairly and evenly. Instead, cats would double up on the Sharpa and not the Jozi. It shows that HYPE is fair and gives equal opportunities and the consumer is the opposite.

Almost two years into this thing and I'm still hearing comments like "there is no Cape Town in the mag". I have never heard so much foolishness in my life. Quantify your argument. Cape Town takes up half the mag - from the mixtape to the editorial. We even took it upon ourselves to label each article so you can see which city the artists are from. Just incase you dont know certain cats from your home town. Open every mag from the past two years, get out an piece of paper and a calculator. Then go do your nails.

We plan to do a third local cover for April May, and again, it will be the hardest working artist(s) who are dominating the industry. If you want your favourate artist on the cover, tell em to work hard and tell em to dominate the industry the way these boys have.

Cash, you may be right about the mixtape. I hope to hear from the b-boys to see if we aint done that in vein.
Peace beloved

Copped this yesterday. Scanned trough the CD. not that impressed on first listen. havent read the mag, but the cover looks dope. Will definately sell.
Mizi - the cover can be interpreted in a number of ways including these two.
1) The Sharpa edition did well, hence 2 local covers in a row (as promised).
2) Sharpa edition did not do well &  you are looking at Jozi (as the grouping making waves at the mo) to make a dramatic recovery.

Which one is even closely related to the truth? I hope the former.

Merchant,

December is generally a good month for magazine sales. Sharpa is not a well known mainstream artist therefor, the safest time to put a Sharpa cover on would be December. February is generally a bad month for mag sales - everybody is still recovering from their festive spending so a more popular cover is needed. We were not going to put Kanye on for the sake of keeping it local so we took Jozi for this period to keep it SA and still push units. As you knowm magazines like True Love Babe and Zoo have closed down as they couldnt stay afloat in this economic situation, and what Im trying to do amongst others is to keep our mag alive. Any mistimed decisions mean the cosing of magazines these days. Stakes is high yo.

Sharpa didnt do as well as expected butit pushed none the less. Still keeping us in our position as the fastest growing youth culture mag. Pushing 4 times what what the peeps at Ymag are doing... And I hear their coming out with a Jozi cover next month. Mshana is also doing Jozi for April. So ya, the rest follow

yo Mizi, i feel u dog. Very insightful and eye opening what u jus did. Nuff respect!
With regards to the mixtape, i just fealt that B-Boys dont NEED to get breaks n stuff by buyin HYPE, they get enough stuff from their own resident DJ's and the likes of Ready D are capable enough of droppin these type of mixtapes! if they gotta drop sum in HYPE,limit it to 1 or 2 tracks(bonus tracks) not half the tape :)
I just felt like the tape consisted of a few REGULAR names as usual(which took away from all the young hustlers tryin to get in the tape too"such as myself") and then the rest of the tape is DJ/b-boy stuff(which took away from even more young hustlers tryin to get sum), i just felt that feeling of gettin WINDED!
that thump in ya chest!
but like i said, n like u sayin now! NIGGAS JUS GOTTA PUT IN MORE WORK! i support that. n if it gets harder gettin a slot on the tape, niggas jus gotta work harder!
Maybe its a blessing in disguise! niggas will jus get hungrier n double up on their work!
We was at Top Stereo last night n we premeired 5 new SINGLES!
Thats the work ethic ur talkin bout n it can only be good for hiphop!
We came in and the entire interview we had ONLY Monopoly n CRACKBOYS material playin!
Who can say they got that much material that the DJ dont need to bump no other shit during an HR show!?

The mag was tight! The cover was a breathe of fresh air n a vote of confidence to the diversity in hiphop!

check out the Monopoly page n tell us what u think of the new mixtape comin in MArch! link below:

Mo from Yfm called me yesterday and had Fungayi on the other line. They wanted us to speak on the fact that we both had Jozi on our covers.

Now, firstly, I said that Jozi deserves all the publicity they can get and Im proud of them. Obviously we came out a month before Ymag so its clear who the biter is.

I also stated that the cover issue was the least of my concerns. This issue of Y is a carbon copy of this issue's HYPE and incorporates elements of past issues too. The most obvious is the fashion shoot which is the same concept, execution and content we had in ur Oct/Nov issue. We had Clinch And Rep Dancing in our fashion shoot, Ymag has Clinch and Rep dancing in their fashion shoot.
They bit our Word OnThe Street section and still have predominently hip hop content. We had T.I in Feb, Ymag had T.I in March. We had JR in Feb, Y had JR in march. We had Wu Tang in Feb, Y had Wu Tang in March. Difference is we had a RZA interview and they just wrote.

I proceeded to state that YMAG NEEDS HYPE. WE ARE THE LEADERS AND THE REST ARE FOLLOWERS!!!  Its like the Ymag staff read HYPE all day and it shows. All day... they read HYPE. We are the most influencial youth publication. So much that we influence other youth publications.

Real talk

Fungayi basicall said that the Ymag Jozi story was more curent. Which is true seeing as a lot can happen in a month, and that its easy to update a straight bite. He also saidno publication can have exclusive rights to an artist at any given time. Basically meening its not illegal to copy anybody. Which is also cool.

I just sent the Ymag team a box of HYPES, some stick on nails and belly rings

I am proud to announce that our Feb/March issue has sold 80%. This is great for a local cover dropped in a low spending period in the middle of a economic difficulty.

Thanks for doubling up

Yep.. While doubling and Hat Tricking... Perhaps you can also convince 3 people to buy the mag? The More people who buy the mag is just as important as the amount sold. More people need to be involved in this. Otherwise were not growing anything.

Doubling up, helps the mag. And its a mighty fine mag, and it needs our support. I rate, convincing 3people per issue to buy the mag, is definitely more constructive than upping the copies u personally buy. So when it sells 30k we know that 30 000 individuals copped it, as opposed to 10 000?

If Doubling and tippling and quadding is the answer? Where will it end? Will will be forced to "double up" and "Hat trick up" at shows to?

Any thoughts?

PS. I'm also for doubling up and such. Perhaps for authenticity sake, those that double up or whatever consistently, must post picks of them and their purchase and receipts for validity. That way, its not just talk.

i have to buy at least 3 copies so that when cats come to the crib and 'borrow' my copies i know i always have at least 1 for my archives ;)

so, in my case, even though only one person bought them, at least 3 people have read them.

I doubt that many ppl double up

lol.. i doubt many people are doubling up either. And the weird thing is the people who are in a financial position to buy the mag don't. Their so many head who get by on free copies. Heck i get the occasional free mag my damn self, but i do cop it from time to time. just to show support.

@Dplanet
Yep their definitely leaches out there. Thats the reason i stopped buying Scratch mag. People always jacking your stash.

The reason you buy three is because we let people take our mags. Maybe we need to be stricter with it. I think encouraging people to buy is better. But for real tho, we need to get people into the culture of buying. R20 bi-monthly is swingable. There is really no reason why people cant cop the mag.

Congrats! 80% is not an easy target to reach, especially with a local cover a time when sales usually dip. Very well done!

like D Planet, i always need 1 untouched for my archives.
I copped the Jabba issue, then gave one away at the Rand show to sum fan.
then i copped 2 more for my collection and the other for Jus In case sumone jacks it from me :D

I feel u Nyambs on gettin mo peeps to cop, i have no idea how many people we tell to get the HYPE mag when we out in the streets sellin dat CRACK!
One of our selling points or marketing strategies, is when a cat says "Who are u guys? what is the crackboys?" we tell em to pick up the latest HYPE mag and read about us, or go to our website, or facebook!

U'll be surprized how many cats have hollered back at us on the website after pickin up the HYPE!

So i think doublin up puts the product out more. A mag sittin on the shelves at CNA does not reach as many cats as a mag sittin in yo crib, or studio or desk at work!

Ask McKasualT, there is a HYPE mag sittin in the Virgin Money marketing team right now. the article on me is sittin on the Notice boards!! all because i had an extra copy and circulated it at the office.

Doublin up will help the INVESTORS put more into the mag, the only STAT they care about is HOW MANY UNITS SOLD!they dont care HOW MANY PEOPLE. so were kinda beatin them wit they own rules.

I think HYPE is directly responsible for getting more people to buy(ads, promo, etc), doubling up is OUR responsibility! but its simply a choice. its like with comic books, doublin up is more for collectors, its a CULTURE!

i know niggas who even double up on kicks, fitteds, ice, etc.
lets not now get all serious and request receipts n shit. ;D those who didnt double up, its cool, yall broke, we understand. Its hard times we livin in,inflation is up! ;)
those who doubled ,quad, hat tricked, THANK YOU!

Well done to HYPE and lets sell more units, make more hits, support each other more!

ps. vote or die

lol.. wasn't about being serious. Was basically about proving those who double up or triple up really do. Otherwise its just talk. I can go to the Beethoven launch tomorrow and get 4copies and be on AG on Monday talking about how i quadrupled up.

The problem with giving away free copies is, once you do that, the person u gave it to, starts to expect it for free. Thats just the way it is, I used to have every scratch mag, and the same people would borrow the mag from me, time and again, because they knew they could get it for free.

How can you verify that the people actually copped the mag? For all you know they could have borrowed a copy from Dplanet or read the notice board at Virgin Mobile?

Hollaring at people sometimes is not enough, if you really want to help, be proactive, start a contest or something on your facebook or website. Where the winner can get a date with a "Crackboy" or gets a signed DVD or Poster, in exchange they just need to take a picture with the Hype Mag, send a cut out of your interview or receipt for the purchase of the mag. You can decide on the rules.

Like i said, i'm not opposed to doubling up, it is a good initiative for all the reasons you mentioned and more. But we need to grow the industry.
