I think poetry is deeper ( My definition of deep: After words/sentences are recited the crowd/audience is left very confused and a few will try to act as if they comprehended what the poet said, when in actual fact they didn't, coz the poet wasn't making sense at all). There's more than one message derived from a poem. Hiphop in other words is more straight forward unless u are H. Thabs or BMP..

Yea, yea, ok, alright

Ya'll know them niggas that I'm talkin bout
The ones that ya'll be seeing at the coffee house
Soon as they get the mic I start walkin out
And swear that they skill the most talked about
It's time to bring the emcees on, I'm sick of niggas lookin
Bitch trying to read poems and try to battle
Me with sandals and capries on
, come on dog
I'm about to get hyped with this, shed some light to this
So called black righteousness
Even though ya'll niggas might not cuss like me
At the end of the night ya'll just trying to f*** like me
So what's the reason for the hating, niggas with dreads
Calling they self gods with white girls named Caitlin
And I'm cool with interracial dating, but I aint about
To hear no f***ing speeches cause I wanna have some bacon

I rock and swerve, that's why I cant f*** with
Coffee houses man, get on my god damn nerves

And deep down ya'll know that I'm right, man shit I'm bout
To kick some Trick Daddy next poetry night like
My black queen
Don't know nan nigga

That pretty sum up how I feel about poets. Not the actual poetry... just the poets themselves ...

Ag please cmon now, poetry like music has a wide variety of styles and taste. Nursery rhymes is poetry, the dumb stuff at skul is poetry, rap is poetry... But lately poetry seems to only be referred as the dread locked, deep thinking, finger snapping type of poets....

Me i started out with poetry which eventually led me to rap

that is a very stereotipical way o lookin at at, not all poets have dreadlocks or always gaan aan about black consciuosness  just like not all rappers wear baggy jeans or bape and rap about bling they dont have its all in da mind.....i blend both a these but i stil call my self  a poetress.....no dreadlocks, i dont call myself  black-child and i mos def do not wear capri pants

Rap is a subset of poetry. R-A-P = Rhythm And Poetry.

Poetry is the foundation of rap. It is not suprising that many rap artists started out writing poems and/or maintained that skill throughout their career (see Tupac). Instead of focusing on the art, I think most posts here are comparing the lifestyle choices of urban-poets to the flashier rap-lifestyle. They might be more similar than you think.

I used to be a poet too. Used to call myself Eternal-cloud-of-Africa-blocking-the-harsh-rays-of-western-sun-which-means-to-shrivel-up-our-culture.

I used to perform my poetry dressed in camos and army boots made in Asian sweathops and criticise Nike and Timberland for exploiting the third world.
Sometimes I used to make up words just because I wanted to sound as deep as the other cats and I did poems about important issues like my periods and how men are evil bastards.

I wuld love to live in a world where HAPPY POETRY exist coz now when I think of poetry I think of all the pieces I've had & they all express pains & suffering that that particular poet has experienced,if not they dwell on S.A's past not how we shuld be healing from that. All im trying to say is if poets wuld shift their focus to sumthng mo UPLIFTINF=G rather than making ppl feel donw or depressed sat the end of their performances.

With hip hop I just love the rythm it brings to my feet & make me want to move with the flow.

Guess you were one of those alternative poets since the word 'black' was omitted
from your name. you clearly didn't fail to follow the rest of the manual so i'm sure
