IN A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN (TOP 5)

Planetary a**ault(Brilliant photography -CLEAN - the atrists jus needed FRESHER GEAR n SWAG, but its still the hottest cover!)
Get it Crackin vol.1(Fly niggas, great GRAPHIC DESIGN,crisp and CLEAN)
Rattex(Good graphic design...a lil on the gay side....jokes...n dude needed to really POSE proper...kinda looks like he's a DJ with an invisible deck???WTF? is he a DJ? n is he rockin that BEN SHARPA lipgloss(nice :D)
Get it Crackin vol.2( same as vol.1,nothing new i guess, just FLYER GEAR.we gotta flip it on vol.3...dont wanna get stale!!!)
Damola(nice, simple, dominant black is always a good look, but MOLA cud hav tried lookin FRESHER man! (the ladies gotta wana cop dat too!!!)

THE REST NEED SERIOUS WORK(ie.they KAK maaan! SIES :D)
Yall shud be ashamed of puttin that garbage out!!!!

The worst ever tho was that dude who posted n said "Its a freehand cover, theres a concept behind it ;D...f*** outta here!!!!)
n damola, pls dont use that "Grown man biz" artwork.it makes u look washed up. u wudnt pickthat up if i saw that in a store...n im feelin yo shit, but that covers trashy.

That Planetary a**ault cover is fresh, definately one of the finest examples out right now. Don't like the Rattex very much, bit derivative. The Damole has a nice identity - is it a self-titled album?

Hey Cash - eat my shorts buddy.

The Damola album title is "illustration" , thats just a preliminary draft of the cover.. look to finalize it soon.

He's done about 5 albums since 2005. One of the hardest working emcees out there. Just struggled with company politics and resources to get them out.. Looking to start rolling them out soon.

i wish i could post up the new ben sharpa vinyl ep cover because that is on some other shit!! sadly, i'm not allowed to until the end of the month.

the damola shit is really nice - i get a good idea of what i'm going to be getting with that CD.

i like the corner store mixtape cover too. where is that mixtape btw nyambino? ;)

crack boys shit is on point - the lighting and photography could be better but the graphic treatment is perfect for the product.

i liked the artwork for the zubz's album too.

no beef at all Oints!
I just pointed out that other than the top 5 covers. the rest need to take their artwork more seriously.

We can appreciate cats stuff only when they appreciate the consumer. u cant put out a totally sloppy 10 minute cover and expect it to be appreciated jus cos u "puttin in work"

like i said,Pioneer Unit is doin it proper!
Damola's one is not even finished n it looks proper!
Dem Crackboys covers are proper!

The rest are really not proper!

You obviously dig certain types of more 'straight-up' covers, so I can see why you wouldn't really be interested in more abstract concepts.

kinda reminds me of the backdrop to "Courage the cowardly dog" :D except DARK.

@Rob. sumtimes cats say its "abstract" but it really is just a load of kak. really :) glad i get u thru ur day man! im an entertainer! its my job :D

a toddler can give u ABSTRACT. abstract is not a measurable!
look at all the 5 mic album covers! ul notice that they tell u a lot about the artist, the music, and give you a clear image of whats in store!

And for up n comin cats like all us AGians, its a MUST,that u have a clear image of yourself on your COVER!!!!! i still dont have a clue how half yall"So called HOT RAPPERS" look like?

actually i have STUDIED art! i can paint(acrylics, oil pastel, water based paints), i can do sculptures, and i can also do graffitti.
anyways, an album artwork has DEFINED ARTISTIC OUTLINES!

Its like doing a POSTER or a BILLBOARD! abstactness in these cases are a NEGATIVE! not a PLUS!

Now if ur gonna do a piece for a ART GALLERY,theres more freedom for abstractness. ie. if its not a STILL LIFE or LANDSCAPE exhibition!

Theres a time and place for abstractness!
Its not for CD COVERS!

@ Rob, the comic book cover is a great idea!
But a perfect example of how to execute it is the Outkast "ATLiens" cover!
Theres a RESEMBLANCE in the animated images to ANDRE and BIGBOI(even the superpowers are kind of mirror reflections of their personalities).
Now , on ur cover, U ROCKIN A THICK CHAIN N SUM ICE! lol. DO U SEE THE CONTRADICTION HERE? or u jus gonna say "f*** u CASH" hahahahha

U know im right! jus that all these other dudes scared to tell u!that cover is a BAD LOOK! ;D

@Child - i have a very in depth understanding of art! and i know what TYPE of ART works in what TYPE OF SITUATION!

ie. if u a rapper. i dont think anyone will take u seriously if u got a lot of pink flowers and rainbows in ur cover art. rather keep it simple and introduce the ARTIST(musician),not the ARTIST(designer).

Thats why P units are so tight! The focus is on the ARTISTS and the type of music! simple yet powerful!
Now u come with all this wide array of EFFECTS and paintshop tricks that only another paintshop pro will appreciate!lol

Seriously though, don't you think you're taking the import of the cover a little bit seriously? Sure, I don't wear ice, but I don't go around burning down cities while being bald and wearing rimless read gla**es either. (Unless it's been a really big night out) It's a fun concept which I thought represented my music perfectly.

This isn't a stock image either. It's done by a talented artist named Kabo Maswabi who I have a lot of respect for. When the cover is finished (text, high quality etc.) I think it's going to look f***ing fantastic. It won't appeal to everybody but hey, neither will my music.

And why would I want to look like ATLiens? That would just be biting.

You guys don;t understand.

The point of an album cover isn't to look nice or be creative. Its about selling your music in a package that is completely indistinguishable from the next pop artist's and there is no room for imagination.

I also studied art, and one of the first things they teach you when it comes to design is to blindly follow trends. Don't try to come up with anything unique.

Why do you think No Limit sold? Cos they made every single cover look the same. I can't understand why Atliens was such a big hit. That cover was totally original and unique at the time and shouldn't have caught anyone's eye.

We should all just stop trying to be unique and creative, or else this artform will die. Just conform already.

theres a difference with CONFORMING, and being creative enough to work within the BOUNDARIES.

I mean its a lot easier to do something with NO RULES! than to execute something given DEFINED CONSTRAINTS!

thats why hiphop in SA keeps FLOPPING! niggas cum up with their OWN RULES! hence there cannot be growth as there is no way of facilitating CONTINUITY! ie. new cats cannot build from what the older cats did cos they sommer cum up with their own shit too.

its all good fellas, do ur cover however u want! after all, most of yall niggas put it out to be downloaded for free so it really doesnt matter!

now if u think seein peoples FACES on covers is disgusting ;D i dunno.

@Ruthless, heres ur brief explanation of our mixtape cover!
FRONT - WE ALL POSTED UP IN THE STREET READY TO TAKE OVER THE BLOCK WITH THAT CRACK MUSIC! simple!
BACK - IM SITTIN ON A STACK OF MONEY WITH MY DUFFEL BAG ON  MY LAP. ie. Im bout dat money, n im bout my grind! DONE!

thats what CRACK MUSIC IS! GRINDING! N LOOKIN FRESH!

This theme plays into the actual MUSIC in the mixtape!
Bet Dat,CRACK 101,Fly Gear,Nigga Please,Young nFly.etc....

AND ITS STILL NO BEEF! just a consumer perspective!
Title: Re: Album Artworks
Post by: SUPER RUTHLESS on August 11, 2008, 05:07:41 PM
fair answer there Cash...

Well the cover i did is quite simple as well

Album title: Diary of Legends... so what u see is a man writing in a diary and u see the turmoil in the background which means hes been through alot hence the term legend...
Legend= legacy= forever= Immortal  8)

How about for once we don;t turn this into another thread about this idiot?

He intentionally comes in here, and says something stupid, so that the thread can be derailed and he can jerk off to people talking about him, so let's keep it moving with the graphics.

thats why hiphop in SA keeps FLOPPING! niggas cum up with their OWN RULES! hence there cannot be growth as there is no way of facilitating CONTINUITY! ie. new cats cannot build from what the older cats did cos they sommer cum up with their own shit too.
Now this ^^^ right here is some bull. Duplicate clone rapper is saying stick to the script & be a carbon copy [joker voice in Dark Knight]"Like me!"[/joker voice in Dark Knight]

Some of the most successful albums have had Avant-garde covers:

the Skwatta Cover was hot! i liked that one!
AS u can see it reflects the Skwatta Kamp and reflects their characters! i like the face paint(ie.cats ready to go to war/battle)

The roots one(naw, not feeling it...but it has historical significance...which the Roots embody....the cover TELLS YOU,this is conscious music)

Kanye's - BRILLIANT!!!!!
Another example of GOOD ANIMATION!
It reflects KANYES personality and he takes the TEDDY BEAR theme further to another level!

eg. of simple stick to the script covers - ALL JAY-Z;s covers! BIG's - Ready To Die(the badboy baby)CLa**IC!, Wu Tang Forever, Get rich or die tryin! Common -BE, Snoop Dogg - RnG, The GAme - The Documentary, ALL LL Cool J's covers, LIL WAYNES COVER -hahahaha! SICK!

but ja fellas, i hear what yall sayin and of course there is always room for taste.

@Sdudla,we said back by popular demand cos everywhere we went people were like "When is vol.2 comin out, especially the hiphop dance community cos we covered the Clinch VS Reps saga in vol.2(if u dont know who they are, they are the TOP DANCE CREWS in SA at the moment and squared off to win a trip to LA in the hiphop nationals, to go compete in the Internationals! CLINCH WON!
In fact Clinch are hosting the BIGGEST HIPHOP EVENT in SA soon at Carnival City "The Masters of Rhythm" check computicket!
Last yr they sold out Montecasino!

anyway, i feel what errbody sayin!

Why do you think No Limit sold? Cos they made every single cover look the same. I can't understand why Atliens was such a big hit. That cover was totally original and unique at the time and shouldn't have caught anyone's eye.

We should all just stop trying to be unique and creative, or else this artform will die. Just conform already.

how dare u player hate on OUTCAST

Let me elaborate before you loose ppl...

everyone knows about segregation in the US [although it takes place world-wide]... in short... black ppl were depicted as chocolate...therefore... yo'll can make up a conclusion!

the music is still sounding ethnic in my opinion cuz it embodies a whole lot of african and african american sounds...  :(

Yeah, but it doesn't say anything about the artist. What kind of music is on the album?

What? He has a heart? Don't we all?

Albums arent sold on visual appearance alone, they are sold by the music they contain, I would never buy a CD without listening to it,  It should be up to you to know what music is on that album, it would be under the section of the genre you would be looking at in any case. But you make a valid point, often at times the art direction on the cover is outsourced and the artists invlovement in the creative process is limited, until the artist has to approve it. Top artists employ top creatives to put together their artwork and yeah at times the visual doesnt gel with the content.

the [img][img] is a tag to point to an image hosted somewhere. ie

"[img]www.websitename/image1.jpg[img]"

You'll need to have the image hosted somewhere, ie, not on your local machine but a webserver, I've been hosting my images on some of the websites I manage - I know there are community hsting sites where you can upload and host images. I'm not too clued up on that one, maybe some of the other users could help you out.
