Now that we have a decent helping of tracks to choose from its time to try to narrow them down to 100.
We will need some criterion for elimination.
1) In the case where an artist has more than 1 track nominated I say we add the most popular song. If a 2nd track is up for consideration it will need to be motivated for & co-signed by someone other than the nominator. 3rd track would need 2 cosigns; 4th - 3cosigns etc etc
2) Where the track is not as popular here on AG we can upload them for the rest of us to preview & vote.
3) Lets try & make this as diverse a list as possible in terms of countries. Music from some countries is clearly more popular than others but lets try & diversify the mix as much as possible. Afterall this is the AG top 100 & AG is more than just a Southern African site.
4) Vote for up to 25 songs already on the list below only. Just so its easier for me to collate the results from 1 thread.
5) Provide adequate justification. Say a sentence or 2 on each nomination stating why it should be in an African hip hop top 100 songs list.
Any other ideas?

Maybe Cashless should have 2 tracks on the 100. 3 even. Just nominate your 25 from the list above & I will tally the votes & we can see what the top 100 looks like from there.
Those of you with late nominations please refer to this thread:

i thought people had to justify each nomination?

i thought people had to justify each nomination?
That would be great (as wishful as it is these days here on AG that there be any substance to a thread).
I hope the good people of AG can provide adequate justification. Say a sentence or 2 on each nomination stating why it should be in an African hip hop top 100 songs list.
I'll add that suggestion to the front page criteria.
Again PLEASE do not add new nominations to this thread. Please go & add them here:
http://www.africasgateway.com/forums/index.php?topic=24339.0
Only pick from the main list on the first page of this thread.

I feel Southern Africa should get a reasonably good amount of nominations, but be fair to to places that have delivered cla**ics such as Senegal, Nigeria, Kenya, Angola, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Congo, Morocco, Algeria,..there has been cla**ic material droped everywhere! We need the top 100!

140 KNaan Soobax (Somalia)
K'naan captured a slice of life in Somalia, and made a catchy cross-over track. It was partly down to this that he took his talents to the US.
50 Cashless Society Hottentot Hop (Bantu 1 2) (South Africa / Botswana)
An iconic track with cross-over appeal. If you have to choose one track to represent Cashless it has to be this. I personally prefer Taxi Wars, but Hottentot Hop had more impact.
70 Driemaanskap Itsho into
Timeless cla**ic. Gives me chills whenever I hear the opening bars, "Rest in peace to the Gugulethu 7!". Iconic Cape Flats music.
28 Ben Sharpa - Hegemony (South Africa)
Another iconic track that is way ahead of it's time. Concept, content, delivery all show why Sharpa is probably the greatest African emcee alive.
211 Pro Kid - Soweto (South Africa)
Once again, if you have to choose one Pro Kid track then this is probably it. It's a really tough call between this and Nthini Ngo Pro though.
I have to bounce - i'll add more later.

95 Groundworks ((stereotype))type) (South Africa)
A cla**ic from GroundWorks - one of the foundation crews of the SA underground movement. Packed full of Afrocentric quotables. Still totally relevant to this day. Dungeon Keepers should probably be on the list too, but if I have to choose one GroundWorks track, it's this one. RIP Hueman.
102 H20 It's wonderful
Catchy, feel-good track that made you feel like SA Hip Hop was going somewhere (commercially).
163 Max Normal - Super Evil.
Cla**ic Cape Town Waddy madness. Totally underrated as an emcee. Always conceptual and insane. A real banger too - I've seen packed clubs going off to this one on many occasions.
253 Skwatta Kamp - Umoya
I've never really been a big fan of SK, but any list without them on it would be just be silly. They reportedly sold over 80,000 units which is amazing by any standards. Umoya is probably their most iconic cross-over track to date.
Something from POC, Mr. Devious and BVK have to be on the list too - I'm not familiar enough with their work to know which tracks are their most cla**ic - someone help me out.

-
Looks like a number of artists are going to have more than 1 song on this list. Props for the nominations.
-
I wonder what the ratio of SA tracks vs the rest of the continent should be. Remembering this would be an AG top 100 & AG is predominantly SA members.
-
I feel that the continent as a whole should be recognized and that it shouldn't be a predominant South African list.
-
I feel that the continent as a whole should be recognized and that it shouldn't be a predominant South African list.
Agreed. But what should the quota be for SA tracks? I suggest at most a third i.e. 33 of the tracks should be from SA.
-
yeah that seems reasonable i guess

yeah that seems reasonable i guess
If there is a maximum quota requirement then should there be a minimum requirement too? Like if certain countries are UNDERrepressented should we make allowances for tracks from there too even if they are not as popular here?
