Title: Atlas Shrugged
Post by: Capt Schti on November 16, 2008, 07:01:43 PM
I'm currently reading this book and it's shaping up to be one of the most important books I'll ever read in my life, the last one was "The Alchemist", which are read before relocating to Cape Town in one afternoon.

This book champions the individual, the creativity and the human spirit I don't mean that in a corny, "we are all winners" way, but if you often feel like everyone is working against you, and average is the norm and no one strives to win, this is the book to read...

The trick to reading, in my opinion, is to find the subject matter you like, don't read "The Secret" because everyone is, don't buy "Capitalist Nigger" because you favourite MetroFm DJ talks about it. Reading is entertainment and enlightenment, don't make it a chore, yo!

you didnt say by whom so i checked it out. AYN RAND.

she pops up everywhere in other stuff as a thinker of note. theres also quite an interesting story to do with her, some aspect of her life. if i could remember it. which i probably wont.  :-\

cool good looks.

sidenote: looks like its gonna be made or has been turned into a movie with angelina jolie

concur...

this is just a suggestion! SChit, do you think we can perhaps use the thread as a spontaneous book discussion, say perhaps each one of us throws in a book or two they have read and if it so turns out that another person has read the same book we might then use that as a platform to disscuss it a bit and in turn for the benefit of the people who dont read can pa** it on and thus they "read"?

just a suggestion but if its given the green light i would like us to discuss "COnversations with GOd by Neale Diamond Walsh. just finished reading the thrid and last in the series and i am burning to hear how other people reciecved anyone of them.. ;)

I READ ATLAS SHRUGGED WHEN I WAS IN GRADE 10,AND IT CHANGED MY LIFE!!!
(had to put that in caps)

after that i became obsessed with ayn rand and read everything I could get my hands on by her. "The Fountainhead", was awesome, even some of her non-fiction stuff.
lucky for me some of my friends were into her as well so we would have long, explosive conversations :)

man, her philosophy of objectivism reinforced some of the ideals i already stood for and gave them credence and expansion (even to spheres i had previously thought extreme).
this book will force you into difficult moments of introspection, awesome read.

Oh yeah, I change my mind on this book. f***in' hate it.
Besides I'm more socialist in my view and this book is a crackpot capitalist nonsense.
f*** it.

i have read the unknown ideal too. I thot her views on state intervention is flawed.
she ia almost utopian in her beliefs which i think isn't practical anywhere especially in AFRICA.

will check for atlas shrugged.

socialist or not.. u have to admit though that her argument for unfettered markets is one of the more cogent one may come across.. the allegory used to validate her point, not only supports capitalism, but critiques human nature as well.. 4 phat lips
methinks it's also well written.. that there are many subtexts & other narratives makes it all the more interesting..
just my thoughts..

Ha! You'd think that over a course of ten thousand or whatever pages that book has someone would improve.
The Dalai Lama could write better sex scenes than her!

I'm gonna try and not get into an ideology debate, because like in the book there is rarely any middle ground.  People quickly become extremist.

Now I personally love the harder you work the more you get rewarded capitalist ethos, but I also appreciates that no man is an Island and I believe that you don't win when you cross the finish line first but when everyone is over the line.

With that said, the arguments in the book are hardly convincing or do her beliefs any favour, instead the heroes come off as ugly, selfish and unattractive.

Even more at this time with the Wall Street snafu. The bankers were left alone and they created a
'Neverland" economy, made billions out of it, then it crumpled and normal people lost their houses, jobs and savings.

If you read up on what these cats, unregulated, were doing on Wall Street, you wouldn't even trust them with an "IOU" note.

no doubt.. & if u knew me u'd know my views about the fickle market economy..
however.. my contention was that her argument was a coherent & honest account of free enterprise & showed the shortcomings of government intervention in the economy..
moreover the portrayal of some of the characters [eg. that VP's brother & his cronies] is further evidence of her views on human behaviour.. methinks alongside 'a random walk down wall street' it ranks as the most honest a**essments of big industry & investment banks.. a book such as 'barabarians at the gate'.. & movies like 'boiler room', 'smartest guys in the room' and 'wall street' grandstand a bit.. & this detracts somewhat from their core message..

I did check out Atlas  Shrugged book was too abstract for me in the first 3 chapters so i just stopped reading it . YEAH OINTS i see you there, I still maintain " Conversation with God 1,2 and 3 are best ever published books in the history of the Universe. Those books can shift ones mentality understanding how life really works, its all on you and how you respond to situations that determines your lifes path.
