UnLearn Agency Official Press Release

Hip Hop can’t stop, won’t stop, it don’t stop!!

Clearly hip hop is not dead. Whilst most of us are still high off the Back to the City hip hop festival, along comes yet another great hip hop event. Over the past year SA heads have been spoilt with great international hip hop acts. Just in the past 5 months we have seen ?uest Love, Mos Def, Zaki Ibrahim and Slum Village. Now, the UnLearn Agency (who brought you Back to the City) bring you Killah Priest.

Referred to by both the media and his fans as a prophet, innovator, and poet, Killah Priest is recognized as one of the most vivid lyricists in Hip Hop. Priest (as he prefers to be called) is a tangential a**ociate of the Wu-Tang Clan. His first recorded appearances were on records such as Wu side projects and solo albums as the Gravediggaz, Ol' Dirty Bastard's Return to the 36 Chambers, and, most importantly, Genius/GZA's seminal Liquid Swords.

His contributions became legendary and paved the way for the release of his acclaimed debut album, Heavy Mental. Priest released a second album, View from Masada, in 2000. In 2007, he released his third album, The Offering which secured his status as one of the most compelling solo artists in the Wu-Tang stable. (http://www.myspace.com/killahpriest)

Killah Priest didn't show up to the Cape Town gig.

Kallisto, Lanky & Whosane did their best to compensate (musically), but before you part with your hard earned cash in J-Sec or Durban, find out if Killah Priest is actually in the country.

The organisers took about R1000 on the door so the support acts were offered R200 per act.

A bad day for hip hop in Cape Town.

I wish life had a 'report to moderator' button.

Without knowing the facts we can't say much, but I wonder what went wrong. One would have thought refunds would be offered...

is this a mistake DPleezy? that would mean it was poorly attended.

No, not a mistake. I think 10 people paid R100. Everyone else there were either artists or friends of artists. Maybe a total of 50 people were there.

ah f*** it. we've had plenty international acts in the past few, anyway.

why is it that these people always squeeze as much as is humanly possible out of independent organizers dealing with a floundering currency, knowing full well that they enjoy marginal fame both at home and abroad, meaning great returns are unlikely?

could it be that they're aware of how much our hip hop community defers to American artists - specifically  the conscious type  that puts our 3rd world suffering into context for us?

From the official Facebook page....

"Unfortunatley Killah Priest Cancelled his offer to come to South Africa, therefore all shows in south africa are cancelled. We apologise to everyone, unfortunately its beyond the control of the promoters involved.

We do however have other offers on the table to have Masta Killa, Reakwon or Cappadonna perform in South Africa, we will inform everyone once we have secured any of these artists mentioned."

Funny enough the shit we would pay and love to see comes often but doesnt get media hype as Jay z or 50 did. How can these people possibly pack venues with low ambitions in the first place. They need to make it maor, a concert not a club gig, only hiphop and get a roasta of local heads, then we dipping yougin

Depends who the artist is, but you're looking at a minimum performance fee of $10k USD + 3 business cla** tickets ($9k USD each) + 5 star hotel accommodation (7 days x R4k x 3).

Probably looking at around R225,000
