Peace yall. Could someone please explain to me if entering for yourself is normal. I thought your work had to be recognized by the "board". As far as I understand any idiot can enter:
Anyone may enter, providing the work they enter was released to the public within the specified time period of 1 September 2008 to 30 November 2009.
Not sure what 'released to the public' means though - technically-speaking just printing a few CDs and selling them in Ritual store satisfies this criteria. Same goes for uploading MP3s on a website. So basically, anyone can enter.
However, 'Artists may enter only ONCE PER CATEGORY'.
The entrance fee is payable on entry, and will go towards the HYPE DANCE ACADEMY, to be established in the future.
I can't see what the entrance fee is though... anyone know?

I feel it won't be fair of me to vote in any of the categories as I do not own/heard any/most of the material produced by any of the acts nominated. This had me thinking how true will the votes confirm that the winner is the deserving the award? Its a tricky situation b'coz nor matter which way the winner is choosen, Vote/panel heads will always be divided.

There are some heads on the lists I have a lot of respect for, but when you have some no name wannabe's leading the polls 200 to 10, tell me these wankers, aren't sitting on the computer all day voting for themselves and beating their little dicks, this is a bullshit poll, they should have either locked down the IP address, or actually have a mail in vote or something, a sheet you fill out, that is in the mag or something and mail in, you will have less votes, but you could take them more serious at least, but this look like some clown awards right now, hope they tighten they act and fix the loopholes before the shit hits the fan! The credibility of anyone who wins will be completely undermined. Mizi and Simone need to come up with a plan B pronto. I know that their hearts are in the right place, but this could turn into an ugly fiasco. Time to call in Deloitte.

I feel we went about this whole thing in the wrong way. I suggest they take the same approach that People mag did, you publish a double page of the artist and then ask the public to either fax or post the nomination list and from there you get your top 5. From the top 5 you open it to public voting and that should not count for more than 40%.
Seeing how some cats just vote for themselves day and night is disappointing cause then it defeats the perpose of the awards in the first place, I agree that some of those guys I have never heard of and some of the songs nominateed didnt even make on radio, so how the f*** do you nominate a song no one has heard?

How can they possibly tell when a situation 'looks suspicious'? The whole point of a vote is that it is absolute. You can't predict who is more popular, or who's fans are more motivated to vote. We can only guess that Blood Spillaz votes look suspicious - maybe they went on a huge voting campaign for all we know? The point is that if you can't guarantee that the voting is fair, you shouldn't do it. Resorting to panels to judge what looks suspicious defeats that whole point of a vote as the panel can only make guesses based on the perceived popularity of the various artists.
Look how much controversy there was when the wrong person from Idols went through because of a delay in the SMS votes being received. People take this voting shit seriously. There need to be proper checks and balances in place or the whole thing becomes a farce.
The problem now is that they have gone too far down the road to change anything. Lots of people have voted legitimately already. It's a tough one.

I really think they need to fix the problem ASAP, or there will be no credibility whatsoever when the awards are being handed out, an alternative safe solution where voters register with an email address, and the IP gets noted in a**ociation with that email account, for safe measures, even then people might be able to abuse the system, say they have a computer at home, and one at work, and seperate email accounts, but at least they'll only be voting twice and not 200 times.

Problems come before solutions. The problem was pointed out. Dont know why we're expected to not point it out when we're seeing something going terribly wrong.

Actually Simone and Mizi do read these boards (or hear about what goes on here), and they are looking into trying to sort out the issue. I'm going to be very interested to see how that works out though.

I also left a message about this on Simone's Facebook page. I really would like to see this work out, since it is a good initiative to give some recognition to our hard working heads. I just don't think its fair if it isn't done correctly and the awards go to people who don't deserve it. Then we might as well stick to the SAMAs.

cats have been nominated for an AWARD, that right there is recognition, its how you CHOOSE to use the SHINE you have been given that counts out the most...there is NO LOSS HERE, as soon as you were nominated YOU HAVE WON (recognition). im not south african but i listen to the music (if its good enough) and some of these cats granted i have never heard of but win or lose (when it comes to the award that is) they would do best to make sure people check for them more...!capitalize on the BUZZ, cos the niccas who win the award can prove STALE as f*** BY TOMORROW and get surpa**ed by the so called LOSERS...

It seems like the hype awards pages have changed. Now I'm confused. Each category now has a description of the criteria for each category, eg...
The Best Album category will be awarded in recognition of excellence in song composition, lyrical ability as well as musical appeal. This will be awarded to individual artists or groups. In this category, the award is given to the performer, producer, engineer and executive producer of an album released within the eligibility period.
It sounds as if it's not about the public vote any more (although the 'vote now!' button is still there). When you click on 'vote now!' it takes you to a page which is empty apart from the category description. Anyone else seeing that?

Therefore, where there is a distinct discrepancy in the ratio of the number of online votes vs the number of SMS votes for a particular nominee, HYPE magazine will investigate the matter. HYPE will then make a final decision, in conjunction with the judges who adjudicate the judged categories and the auditor, based on consensus. In the event of a dispute, HYPE reserves the right to make the final decision, always endeavouring to retain the wish of the majority of the people who voted via SMS. What do we mean by "discrepancy in the ratio"? Well, if all nominees in the category has , say, around 20 SMS votes plus 200 online votes (a ratio of 1:10) but one nominee has 20 SMS votes plus 6 000 online votes (a ratio of 1: 300), that's a "discrepancy in the ratio", so we'll investigate and follow the procedure above.
3. Voting (via SMS and online) will close a week before the award ceremony, to ensure all votes are delivered timeously, and included in the final count, thus preventing problems such as those experienced by a popular television programme where SMS votes were used to determine the winner.

What do we mean by "discrepancy in the ratio"? Well, if all nominees in the category has , say, around 20 SMS votes plus 200 online votes (a ratio of 1:10) but one nominee has 20 SMS votes plus 6 000 online votes (a ratio of 1: 300), that's a "discrepancy in the ratio", so we'll investigate and follow the procedure above.
3. Voting (via SMS and online) will close a week before the award ceremony, to ensure all votes are delivered timeously, and included in the final count, thus preventing problems such as those experienced by a popular television programme where SMS votes were used to determine the winner.
4. The final vote will be checked by an auditor for accuracy.
5. The judges' decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Co-Siggy. Their argument on discrepancy does not hold water. What if people that like a particular artist happen to be in their thousands and have free internet access at work and a majority or all of them decide to vote online only, seeing that sms is charged and online for them is free.
That would give their artist of choice legitimate online votes, and if a competing artist in the category only recieved far less votes via sms, according to HYPE, that would be probably be flagged as fraudulent votes.
Stick to sms only to avoid controversy.
