Nice phone indeed, would have only thought they would have just attached a usb 3.0 option for when that kicks in just to be safe. But non-the-less it don't make much of a diff when running a phone wit 1GB ram.

You know this phone is pretty much irrelevant. No matter how good a phone is, people will still want an iPhone.

I suspect it will be around the price of a new unlocked N97. In the US its $650. So about R6000 right? Not chump change by any means.

Whats useful is it supports VoIP calls so you can run skype and make free phone calls.
"Again f*** yo iPhone ninja!"
I'm eating beans and rice to afford this when it comes out.

Actually most reviewers, me included, rate the user experience on the Pre, not only as matching the iPhone, but actually beating it.

Like you said, you don't bother with all the tinkering as much as I use to do on my iPhone. With the Pre, none of that was necessary, cos the phone is open to all developers' apps etc. without having to pay or jailbreak it.

The Pre is awesome. I just can't wait to see if this thing actually matches up, since the N97 also looked good on paper, but didn't deliver. I had one on test for a week and was really not impressed.

"maaaan" that quote's 'soooo' Sep 9th... ::)

Read it and weep punch-drunky:

Quote from: Nokia Rep on 11 September 2009
This week, there have been a number of speculative stories suggesting that Nokia will not allow for operator customization of Maemo devices. Seems a few people are getting ahead of themselves. As we have said over the past couple of weeks, our plan with Maemo is to focus on the consumer experience – integrating applications and services from Nokia, our broad community of developers and publishers and, of course, from our operator customers. While we have not announced immediate plans to offer an operator variant for the N900, there are many customization points for operators on the N900. It would be absolutely incorrect to a**ume that we will not offer operators the ability to tailor future Maemo devices to suit their needs.

10 Things you need to know about the N900:

Quote
7. First for Firefox

Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of the announcement for the technology industry is the fact the N900 will be among the first with Firefox Mobile, the potted-down version of the popular desktop web browser.

The browser included within the N900 is actually built on Firefox founder Mozilla's technology, but Firefox Mobile will offer all the treats of the larger browser on a mobile phone.

This means tabbed browsing, intuitive web search with the Awesome Bar, and even synchronised bookmarks across your desktop and mobile experience.

Given the N900 is based on the ability to multi-task easily, this is a very important element for the new device.

no time to research but from what I see, hardware is similar.
symbian got dropped, trusted it more thatn Windows Mobile, linux & google OS phones on the same ish.
The only contender is the MacOS Unix purebred Kernel which I believe is what makes the iphone still hol on to sumn....

The magic is a great phone. I can't decide which is better between that and the Touch Pro 2.

HTC is killing the smart phone crowd at the moment.

My pros for this over the n900 are:
- Price - won't have to get on that sugarwater & beans & rice diet to afford it.
- Form - Nokia is significantly bigger than the magic/ myTouch
- Intergration - This is already available on the network I use so they have tailored their data & voice offerings to it.

Cons:
- App Memory - Only 512MB of internal phone memory on which to store apps. It doesn't let you store apps on the memory card.
- No 3.5mm headphone jack - Have to use a headphone adapter to connect to my shure SE115 earbuds.
- No attachment support for Outlook POP email. So you have to save then open attachments recieved from MS Outlook in a 3rd party app.

Not really dealbreakers but enough to make me pause/ procrastinate...

HTC Touch Pro 2 vs myTouch 3G:

The only place where I see the Magic really having an edge over the TP2 is the OS. Windows Mobile is rubbish.

On all other fronts it is inferior. I also don't like the fact that it uses google maps for its GPS, since that is kinda shitty when living in SA. then you still have to buy a third party GPS navigation system.
I believe the TP2 has all that sorted already.

damn phones I'm strongly considering an eee Pc

The only eee PC worth getting is the 901. And for that price, you might as well get an Acer One or Fujitsu Amilo Mini. They are cheaper, same specs, come shipped with Linux or Windows (go with the Linux model. It boots in less than 20 seconds and runs much faster) and is available in a range of colours.

Wanna buy my Fujitsu Siemens? I'll even fill up the HDD with pron for you. I wanna get something bigger.

This week in Nokia N900 Stannery:

Nokia N900 runs SNES games! :o :o  :o

http://noknok.tv/2009/10/01/nokia-n900-runs-snes-games/

Quote
...video has appeared with the Maemo 5 OS, which powers the Nokia N900, running the SNES emulator seamlessly. This means you can now play cla**ic games like Super Mario World, Final Fantasy 3, and Super Mario Cart where ever you are.

What’s more, if like us, you were a bit of a SNES junky back in the day, you can plug the Nokia N900 into your television set and play the games in their full original glory thanks to the Nokia N900’s TV Out connectivity. Additionally, the Nokia N900 SNES emulator also supports the addition of a Wii control, which means you aren’t just confined to using the Nokia N900 key pad as controls.

Again, we think this is a wonderful addition to the Nokia N900, and something all gaming enthusiasts will enjoy. We always dreamt about having a portable SNES when we were younger, looks like that’s a reality now.

HELLO HUMANS: DROID BY MOTOROLA ARRIVES NEXT WEEK

DROID By Motorola: World’s First Smartphone with Android™ 2.0

LAUREL, MD – High-speed Web browsing, voice-activated search, customizable large screen, access to thousands of Android applications and hundreds of widgets and the best 3G mobile network in the country: DROID by Motorola arrives on Nov. 6.

Verizon Wireless, the company with the nation’s largest wireless 3G broadband network, and Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT), a pioneer in the mobile industry, today unveiled DROID by Motorola, the first smartphone powered by Android™ 2.0. DROID by Motorola features the brainpower and breakneck speed of a modern smartphone, designed to outperform where other smartphones fall short.

“We’re proud to work with Verizon Wireless and Google™ on the first smartphone to feature Android 2.0,” said Sanjay Jha, co-chief executive officer of Motorola and chief executive officer of Motorola Mobile Devices. “DROID by Motorola delivers a rich consumer experience with warp-speed Web browsing, a mammoth screen, and Motorola’s expertise in design and voice quality. Combined with Android’s open, flexible graphical user interface and the power of Verizon Wireless’ 3G network, DROID is a smartphone that simply doesn’t compromise.”

“This is an exciting announcement for Verizon Wireless, as the DROID by Motorola is the first device that we are bringing to market under our ground-breaking strategic partnership with Google,” said John Stratton, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. “DROID by Motorola gives customers a lifestyle device with access to more than 12,000 applications that will help them stay in touch, up to date and entertained, using the best 3G network in the country.”

DROID by Motorola has a solid exterior, intelligent interior and is one of the thinnest full-QWERTY slider phones available. It is a no-fuss, high-tech, location-aware, voice-recognizing, over-the-air updating, multi-tasking machine – and it is available just in time for holiday wish lists.

With DROID by Motorola, you can:

· Zip through the Web: Access the Internet at 3G speeds via the nation’s largest and most reliable 3G network or from any Wi-Fi hotspot. The multi-window HTML browser with a ma**ive processor delivers the Web the way you expect.

· See it all in cinema-style: View the Web, e-mail, Google Maps™, videos and more in widescreen on a brilliant 3.7” high-resolution screen. Boasting a width of 854 pixels to reduce the need for side-to-side panning and more than 400,000 pixels total, DROID has more than twice that of the leading competitor.

· Run multiple applications at once: Customize your DROID with thousands of applications and hundreds of widgets available on Android Market™. Toggle back and forth between up to six applications at a time to juggle the universe and your apps.

· Perform Google Search™ at the speed of sound: Simply tell DROID what you’re looking for using voice-activated search, and it will serve up Google search results based on your location. If you want more, simply type what you’re looking for into the search bar on the home screen and DROID will also search content on your phone, such as apps and contacts, and the Web.

· Capture moments: Snap digital camera-quality photos with a 5 megapixel camera loaded with the works, such as a dual-LED flash, AutoFocus and image stabilization, or capture your friend’s antics in 16 million colors with DVD-quality video capture and playback. Store it all on the included 16 GB memory card, so you always have it on hand.

· Multi-task like a master: Keep tabs on all your messages with integrated Gmail™ and Exchange e-mail pushed directly to you, but don’t let them get in your way. With the handy Android notification panel, go straight to the message or simply ignore it, and get back to the task at hand. And, a smart dictionary learns as you type and automatically includes your contacts.

· Get where you need to go with Google Maps Navigation (Beta): DROID is the first device with Google Maps Navigation, providing turn-by-turn voice guidance as a free feature of Google Maps. It’s powered by Google and connected to the Internet. Use voice shortcuts and simply say “Navigate to [your destination],” and you’ll be on your way. See live traffic, use Street View or satellite imagery to view your route, and get access to the most recent maps and business information from Google Maps without ever needing to update your device.

Pre-loaded Applications and Enhancements to Google Mobile Services:

· Google Maps: With layers in Google Maps, view geographic information, such as My Maps, Wikipedia, and transit lines, right on the map.

· Gmail: Multiple accounts support and undo for common operations.

· YouTube™: One-touch recording and playback from homescreen widget or app, one-touch sharing with friends, and the ability to view your own uploaded videos and high-resolution videos.

· Google Talk™: Easily switch between chats, search your chat history, and preview pictures and videos sent by links.

· Android Market: Browse and download applications created by third-party developers.

· Calendar: Ability to see who has R.S.V.P.’d to your meeting invitations.

· Facebook: Syncs Facebook contacts to your address book, and a live widget gives the ability to update status and view latest updates from friends.

· Amazon MP3 Store: Download the latest tracks over the air.

· Verizon Wireless Visual Voice Mail: Delete, reply and forward voice mail messages without having to listen to prior messages or voice instructions.

Pricing and Availability:

· DROID by Motorola will be available in the United States exclusively at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and online on Friday, Nov. 6, for $199.99 with a new two-year customer agreement after a $100 mail-in rebate. How does registering for RICA affect your SIM?

Stop talking shit.

It does Pyro. Here's the situation as it stands at the moment, according to the network operators:

The first milestone the operators need to reach is the removal of SIM cards that can be immediately activated without a registration process, replacing them with numberless SIM cards. This was supposed to have been completed by the beginning of this month.

Vodacom says there should be no new starter packs available on the market that will allow a user to immediately access the mobile networks. However, the company says there may still be “pre-provisioned” SIM cards on the market that were activated before RICA came into effect.

MTN says it has put a block on all new SIMs, both numbered and numberless, which will need registration to allow network activation. A SIM card purchased from MTN required ITWeb to register before being activated on the network.

Cell C says the SIM cards available for its network will receive a welcome message and a number via SMS; however, users will not be able to make calls until the card has been registered.

For those concerned about WM itself, basic apps and functionality such as media players, facebook, myspace, multiclient IM, mobile remote, rss readers, radio, google maps, wifi tethering, Outlook integration, OneNote auto-sync all do exist for free and work quite well, nothing to tear your hair out for.

Another plus, HTC has the biggest Windows Mobile development community you can ever find, providing you with frequent OS updates, OS hacking, app development, and many many ways to hack and customize your phone.

The GOAT sneezes at that snapdragon processor then yawns at the Windows mobile & all touchscreen keyboard + no stylus.

Although this Scholes/ Droid tablet may be a contender in 2010 Q1:

It will apparently have a tablet shape with a 3.8-inch touchscreen. Icons below the display match the ones on the Droid, a strong sign that this phone will run Google's Android OS. + HDMI out ports supporting up to 720P video out.

It will supposedly be powered by an 800 MHz processor, and and include an 8 megapixel camera.

Nexus one looking powerful:

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/01/google-debuts-android-powered-nexus-one-superphone/

"Nexus One users can rely on speech anywhere on the phone where text can be input — users can speak their e-mails, text messages, tweets and web searches. The phone also uses dual-microphone noise cancellation for improved voice quality and speech recognition, and has a vastly improved user interface which incorporates widgets that can pull in live data feeds from web services like Facebook."

Wonder if the GOAT can box with the new contender?

The streets is watching tate, its about to get ugly

Negatives
It's Windows Mobile 6.5. BUT, HTC Sense is so extensive that you practically don't have to interact at all with WM while giving you one of the best homescreen UI experience you can ever have now. Watch this video (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5o6tj7yFBQ&feature=player_embedded") at least even if you don't care about anything else.

The good thing? The best hardware on a phone yet:
    • 4.3" Capacitive Display with 480x800 WVGA resolution
    (http://i38.tinypic.com/20zu3rr.png)
    • 2.64x4.74x0.43 inches profile weighing 157g
    (http://i37.tinypic.com/154h7qx.png)
    • 1Ghz Snapdragon Processor
    • 512MB Internal Rom with MicroSD support
    • 448MB Ram
    • 5MP Camera with Dual LED flash
    • Accelorometer
    • 3.5mm headphone jack
    • MicroUSB connector and charger
    • 1230 mAh battery
    • All new updated HTC Sense, letting you access Contacts, Calendar, Messaging, Email, Weather, Twitter, Stocks, Music, Photos and Videos, Settings with a mere swipe of your finger
    • Fastest and smoothest browsing experience yet (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJF63S3yYto&feature=player_embedded")
    • HTC support for multitouch and pinch zoom across browser, media player, and gps

And it's actually not that large because of the very efficient use of space and minimal bezel.

    Misc Info
For those concerned about WM itself, basic apps and functionality such as media players, facebook, myspace, multiclient IM, mobile remote, rss readers, radio, google maps, wifi tethering, Outlook integration, OneNote auto-sync all do exist for free and work quite well, nothing to tear your hair out for.

Another plus, HTC has the biggest Windows Mobile development community you can ever find, providing you with frequent OS updates, OS hacking, app development, and many many ways to hack and customize your phone.

I've been on Crackberry Bold for a while now, and I have to admit, I am sold. It may not have a touch screen or look as cool as these phones here, but having always on, free 3G access is nice and I have all the apps I need as well.

    Anyone else use a BB?

    I'm saying.

I get all my e-mails, Facebook messages, twitter feeds, flickr pics etc. delivered in real time. I can use gmail chat.

I put in someone's name  surname and number and it automatically syncs their info from Facebook to my phone, so  i have their pics and email and everything. I get hourly weather updates, including humidity and perceived temperatures etc. Garmap, and everything the iPhone and all these other phones do, with BB's unlimited internet access.

I don't think I could go back to iPhone or any of these other smartphones.

None, I have the BIS package, so I can download, browse and use all apps as mauch as I want, without paying a cent.

I just pay my monthly subscription and I didn't even use all my free airtime last month, so I still carried over a lot of minutes. I use to spend R400 - R500 a month just on internet usage on my phone.

    I love this phone.

    Co-siggidy.

I was initially interested in the N900, but eventually went with the new Blackberry 9700 (Bold 2) and that's the best decision I ever made. Other competing phones may have a long list of specs and features that can do god knows what, but when it comes to trully functional everyday business smartphone features, the Blackberry wins.

I know a couple of ppl at my workplace who switched from iPhones and don't regret it one bit. Even better if your friends got Blackberrys too for things like BBM, which can transfer files, pics and video for free from Blackberry to Blackberry instead of using MMS.

Its a case of geeks who want their phone to be able to do a shitload of things which they don't even use or understand.

I was like that once, but now that I have the most functional piece of hardware ever in my pocket, I feel different.

Believe me Tate, coming from someone who has had an iPhone, HTC, and Nokia smartphones, the BB is amazing.

I think all those other phones might be cooler if you are in the Sates or somewhere where you ccan get unlimited internet packages on contract, but over here it is only the BB that offers that, so I am sticking with it.
