THE AG ALBUM 2012/2013
I am taking the discussion from the shoutbox into this thread so that we can give this "idea" a fighting chance of becoming more that some big talk that never got anywhere!
Why the album?
It's a tribute. My thinking is that the once mighty Africasgateway forums are fast becoming a ghost-town with interesting content far and thin and member numbers are dwindling like National Party politicians during floor crossing season. Allow me to misquote one-hit-album-wonder Craig Mack: "You wont be around [this time] next year"
So the idea is to preserve or give one last ode to AG before we all move on. One last collective effort.
Yes this town had its day and the writing is on the wall. Remember all the greats who roamed these AG streets? I'm talking Rushay, Nat, Rhoze, Supa, RR, Inyambo, Ootz, MrC, dP, Bafoza, Tate, Rob 1, Emile, Khoi, GodComplex, Nemesis, Native187, Khoi, TruSense(smh, nig still owes me money too but thats another story) etc
We were all like the illegitimate kids of a flawed but loving father, Milkdaddy. Shane was like the white Zuma.
So how do we do the album?
Lets open the floor for suggestions...
Here is my suggestion: Suggestion 1.
> If you have a good unreleased song you can donate it to the project. If you are a rapper and want to record a new song we got beamakers whom we ask to avail some heat for this project.
>Secondly everyone will get a chance to drop a shoutout (e.g 20seconds) which you can email then we will create the interludes off that. This is what will gel the whole project together.
>After finalizing the tracklist I will create an account on soundcloud or similar platform especially for this project and in this way the AG era will be preserved for your grandkids.
We will need an album cover (where's childPoet?)
Beat? Anyone? I started making beats again so I will contribute (http://soundcloud.com/chiefmlu)
Whether we call it album or mixtape whatever. Or are the legal implications? I dont want anyone to be sued if someone takes the album and decides to bootleg (yes it will be that dope) and there's a legal process for example.
Any takers? Thoughts? Let's do this!

Anyway, I think an entire project is do-able if we tackle it on a track by track basis. On some slow and steady wins the race tip. I can contribute some raps to it. It'd be dope if we can get original material for this but should push come to no shove then, like Fahfee said, already existing unreleased tracks should be considered as well.
What's the timelines we're looking at here?
With reference to older gods, they'd probably be down if we just hit'em up. And it would only be right to (try) get them involved.

1 thing I know bout AG is that they disdain wack shit so if you know you not a rapper\singer dj, beatsmith or graphic designer then contribute with marketing or something else this not an opportunity for chance takers this shit has to be proper.

just a suggestion, its important to have a robust structure to this, so it doesnt develop into an unorganised (allbeit noble) concept.
whose responsibility will it be to vet the content (we all love the art, but not everyone will be put on this, if we go that route, we inherently compromise quality) with that said, what are the criteria of selection, on both the emcee and producer front. moreover, who will be in charge of final mix & mastering, furthurmore, how many tracks are we looking at, is it a double cd type thing, whose on the cover, who is to monitor and ensure distribution?
im just putting these things out there, i know Fahfee has more or less a skeletal outlay, however, we must help to enhance the comprehensiveness cos indeed, these are the elephants in the room on which due attention must be given, lest we watch this thing fizzle into mediocrity, or worst case scenario, nothingness..!
all in all, its critical, at this juncture to focus more on the roles and responsibilities, so people can be held accoutable as and when deadlines need to be met, im not particularly worried about songs being recorded or beats being produced, most of us we do this on a daily basis, im more worried about how all that material will be mobilized and channeled with due attention to transparency and adherence to quality.

i must indicate that i will email the beat to FAHFEE as per the earlier agreed upon template, however, i should emphasise that i feel the producer must have final say on who they feel must jump on the beat(s) they produce, given that recorded refs are collected and a thorough screening process can be established.

So far it seems like we are going to get enough beats from some prolific producers here. But where are the mc's though? It seems like there is a rapper or recording studio deficit everywhere?

My take is that by the beats being AG affiliated its as good as part of the project anyone can rap.

Thanks for the concepts and suggestions too.
There is a lack of urgency to pen and record songs though.
There also still various issues to iron out such as quality control, deadline control, mastering, publishing, etc but at least we got the ball rolling.
Looking forward to putting this together when 2013 is upon us.

Personally, much like Fahfee above I am very concerned with traction and a semblence of progress. There is without a doubt a substantial lack of commitment and responsibility. Who is doing what is really what must be addressed. Once again I would like to indicate that I have a team on standby ready and willing to take on the role of cover art design and all the promo visual art that goes with it (except video).
Moreover, me and my dudes are done with our track but honestly we fear putting it towards this record if it is likely never to see the light of day.

Aight so I didn't get to record due to circumstances last month which means my own project is officially 3 days behind schedule. The track for the AG project will still get bundled into my next session though so y'all should get it before month end.

Salute AG fam. Let's soldier on. I was chilling during my holiday listening to the regal, great Miriam Makeba and one of her songs "African Convetion" came on and I immediately thought about this project. It would be a shame if we dont do it justice fam!

Thats still an open topic Tang. We need a volunteer for the mixing and mastering. I should make a list of all the open topics then we can take it from there.

March came and is about gone. Unfortunately over the past month we didnt get the influx of new material that was much needed to propel the project foward. Therefore I have to sadly announce that the project was a fail. :(
All in all we had 6 Track entries. (The instrumental version of the project might be a cla**ic though 8) )
I personally no longer have that much time to invest in the project. The idea was great but it seems that it was a little too late as the traffic here is practically dead.
Nevertheless there's a bright side because the few entries that we did get were all of good to great quality. The networking was great. Also I made new connections and I hope to collaborate with you on some level in the future.
Special Shoutout to: Trompie, Rushay, Naturelle, San, Syklik, Tang, Zeb, JD, BC, Madei, Ekks & everyone else involved in the prroject and/or discussion.

the idea was indeed a noble and benevolent one, the unfortunate thing is that its often misconstrued and discounted the amount of work that actually goes into producing an album, especially if its one that comprises of various artists stationed from around the world.
to be brutally honest, not that much organisation went into the album creation, it was much easier to speak on "wanting to make an album" than it was to actually a**ign tasks and responsibility to people in order to ensure its materialisation and accountability. at the end of the day, the blame lands squarely on the shoulders of the one person, who in fact initiated the idea. thats not a goodlook and it never helps progress let alone motivation moving forward.
in light of this, like Fahfee has said above, the idea was not a complete failure, since it shone light on the realities; it is always a plus when you know who you can rely on when you need things done and who you need to cut off immediatly they open their mouth because they never deliver on shit...!

I am one of the guilty parties... :(
I also know how difficult it is to get a bunch of artists to work toward one thing especially if it's not for gain.
It took me around 3 years to get Ladies of the Mic up and it took me calling an e-mailing people with no response. To organising recording days where like 1 or 2 artist would show up. Until I changed the model and rather asked them to submit complete songs instead. That was my last attempt and it worked. Another difficulty was getting Bio's and promo pics for the site. At the end I had to work with what I had.
Not using that as an excuse,but these types of compilations may end up making one feel despondent.
I am sorry on my side. Juggling 9-5, day to day life gets to me. And at the same time, if there is no pressure to do something I tend to slack or forget. I always work best if someone is on my neck about it.

anyhu, I got a few questions for this project as it seems fate has brought me to chex on AG and find some work on the line up.
1. can an artist submit a track they did and have not found use for it anywhere else? if yes, is there a criteria for artists who submit content, e.g: do they have to be members of the AGFAM(forum).
2. so no one should expect any royalty fees or anything like money value from this project right?
a few young goons who haven't even checked this site even after numerous counts of me tellin em about it, have shown interest on the beats that were posted originally on this thread, can they do em and submit??
