Title: Xzibit Slams Commercial Rap, Urges New Message
Post by: MaddStone on November 18, 2004, 08:31:00 AM
International hip-hop star Xzibit urged artists on Wednesday to try harder to communicate through their music, saying they should stop glorifying violence and get back to being the voice of rebellion and protest.

"Hip hop went through a total stage of positivity and then it transformed into gangster rap and then it got commercial," said the singer and host of MTV car-makeover show "Pimp My Ride."

"Hopefully it goes back to that positive side where we can start communicating and saying something through our music," he told Reuters Television ahead of the MTV Europe Awards, which Xzibit will present in Rome on Thursday night.

The Los Angeles-based rapper said hip hop and rap were traditionally "the voice of rebellion, the voice of protest," but that radio and music companies had made it difficult to break out of the current tendency to glorify violence and power.

"When you can choose to play a record that says pop your a** or a record that has some kind of positive message or knowledgeable subject, it´s easier to accept the ignorance than put out something that has some thought process to it," he said.

In its current phase, hip hop generates $2.8 billion in CD sales annually, according to the Recording Industry a**ociation of America, and has become extremely influential in America. "The guy who just does ignorant music wins the awards and gets the millions of music sales and that becomes defeating after a while," said Xzibit, relaxing on a sofa in custom-made MTV tents on the outskirts of Rome. "That´s kind of what´s forcing people to come out copying the same people over and over again." Xzibit, real name Alvin Joyner, kicked off his solo career in 1996 with the album "At the Speed of Life."

Defying the gangster rap trend, he was one of a number of hip hop artists to take a political stand in the run-up to the U.S. elections this year, denouncing President Bush. His new album "Weapons of Ma** Destruction" will be released in December. "As an artist you have to find a way to get your message into your music," Xzibit said.

Interesting indeed. I guess he´s going through a phase, or growing. Or maybe it´s just some positive things to just say since being given an important job. Then it´s back "tonight I meet my next ex wife"

Yeah, we´ll have to see how things pan out cuz. We´ll have to see. ;-) Wonder who´ll be guesting and who´s gonna do most of the production.I think Dre is on board plus Em.WOuld be nice to check Nottz, Just Blaze, and maybe even some Primo for different flava. Now that would be nice. We´ll have to see though.

I think X has kicked some "love language and sh!t and all soft and sh!t" type of track before. I think that´s him dropping one a track on one of the most slept on Dr. Dre productions of all time Truth Hurts.Shizzay was crazy. It was pretty much a "love and ish" album.

Gud Stuff...
Whats coming out on Unreleased Rec´s? Is there a new Cashless Album coming? A solo X Amount or Snaz would be nyce too.

Please Mr Draz Make it happen!..oh & please register too...chickenheads suk!

As for X to the Zee I think it funny how he came out on some "Its a shame niggas in the rap game only for the money & the fame, Paparazzi" tip then hooked up with the good doc & released some hits & now he all over MTV not only hosting a regular series but HOSTING the VMA´s no less! Does anyone know why MTV EUROPE chose Xzibit of all celebs to host the EMA´s?
I saw a bit of that ish & some of the stuff he had  been scripted to say sounded so un-natural coming from a West Coast Gan´sta rapper! :-?

Xzbit walks the tightrope between a pop-rapper(the kind he claims to hate) and a credible emcee. His most recent albums have been too commercial.

Look out for the STEADY GANG though :-o

besides the fact that doing beats for other cats projects, all this will be next year sometime.....

as far as cashless nothing just yet, still sometime before that happens.
