General Discussion / RIP Dr Mageu
« on: September 10, 2008, 11:22:35 AM »
from Sowetan:

Kwaito singer Ignatius “Dr Mageu” Ntshebele died in prison on Saturday.

At the time of his death, the former TKzee member was being held at the Heidelberg prison for raping a friend’s younger sister.

When Sowetan yesterday visited the late singer’s home in Tshiawelo, Soweto, there were no obvious signs of the calamity that had befallen the family.

Only a group of three men sat in the family’s garden smoking cigarettes.
The singer’s younger brother, Sam Ntshebele, confirmed that the muso had died at the weekend.
The visibly disturbed sibling, however, refused to divulge any further details saying the family was not prepared to speak to the media.
“All I can tell you is that my brother has died. We don’t want to talk to the media about it. We are not going to allow any media person anywhere near this yard,” he said.
Although the popular singer popped his clogs at the weekend, most people in his neighbourhood only caught wind of the news of his death late yesterday.
The controversial artist, who was discovered by Arthur Mafokate, has also sung with Brothers of Peace.
He was sentenced to seven years imprisonment after being convicted by the Johannesburg high court last year .
Details of the funeral are still to be finalised.

General Discussion / Biggie resurfaces, on Twitter
« on: August 01, 2008, 10:29:59 AM »
from Bol: Mad Funny

Speaking of the Notorious B.I.G., a site called >bounce/oz has an interview with a guy who pretends to be Biggie on Twitter.

Here's a bit from the interview:

1. You’ve been quiet for a bit. When’s the next record coming out?

Poppa’s just takin his time to get his tracks straight. To tell you the truth, I’m talking to a couple of labels, so I ain’t sure who’s gonna release my new shit. Spendin’ a lot of time in the studio, though, cuttin’ shit up. Puffy ain’t around much, so it’s going a little slower than I thought.

2. I often see on your Twitter that you’re “ignoring Ma$e’s calls”. What’s wrong with that kid?

I know he’s Puffy’s man, but damn. I ain’t got nothin else to say about that. Motherf***ers ain’t actin right.

3. You still cool with Cease and Kim?

Word, my fam is f***ed up. Cease and Kim in court?!? That shit ain’t right. But all my crew still my blood. Oh, and everybody know I’m still tappin’ Kim on the regular. Yes, she do look like she Chinese now, but her booty still fine.

4. Have you talked to Puff about his rapping? Or his dancing, for that matter?

Look, Puffy concentrating on other things. He got that raisin TV show, his clothing line for white people, some vodka bullshit, and threatening to kill people if they don’t vote. And on top of all that, he tryin’ to marry a 14 year old. So he ain’t got time for you triflin’ reporters talkin bout “he can’t dance,” or “he can’t rap.”

5. What is your drink of choice these days? Moët still a favorite?

Still a big Moët fan. But lately I been tryin’ out these new cups of coffee with chocolate at a place up in Bed Stuy called Starbucks. That shit’s my motherf***in drink.

General Discussion / singing rappers
« on: July 15, 2008, 10:51:13 AM »
Because of the current state of hiphop, I’ve been wondering for a minute…
if your favourite rapper hated on or got bored of rapping and decided to change genre, to lets say R n’ B (similar to Mos Def), who would you vouch for?

Which rapper-just-turned-singer’s album would u cop?

I’d def support Pharoah Monch, maybe Queen Latifah and of course Mos Def,
can you think of any more?

General Discussion / Age is a number
« on: July 07, 2008, 12:57:11 PM »
I just met the ONE this weekend
and I think I’m going to put everything on the one!

But the only problem is…
the age gap, which stretches to almost ten years

Should that deter me? (i mean its not a R.Kelly  ;) situation cause everyone involved is older than 20)

(I know AGians aren’t shrinks but past experiences should be something for me to learn from)

Do any of ya’ll know any south African artists with blogs besides Koos Kombuis and Steve Hofmeyer?

General Discussion / Cage Hussles Fred Nuke
« on: June 10, 2008, 11:14:38 AM »
in "Fred Nukes Blog" dude speaks of how Cage hussles- its mad funny! SMH @ CAGE THO!

Now, during my comeup as an emcee. I listened to alot of different artists. During my post-eminem periode, I came across a guy called Cage (who had an ongoing beef with Eminem at that time). He inspired me in many ways and I really felt drawn towards the crazy world he described and lived in. As time pa**ed, I got a hold of him one day over the Internet - under the alias “Alex the Wurmking” (mind you I had just started rapping 2-3 years before this). I talked him into doing a verse for me for 500 dollars (which was alot of money for me back then) and he would record it and send it over (on minidisc or cd). Hyped from the fact that I was about to do a track with one of my biggest idols, I instantly wired the money from my account via an international bank transfer. He told me, that he had recieved the money and that he would start working on the verse. I also send him 2-3 different beats to work with.

Time pa**ed. Nothing happened. I emailed him again - asking him what was going on. He replied, he had been outta town and was really busy, or he had some technical issues. In other words, he was stalling the project (or at least I can see that now). He also told me, that he was about to blow up and that he would need more money for the verse - if I gave him 500 bucks more, I could even get a beat from Camu (tao). I figured, if that was what he needed to get it done and I would get the verse plus a beat from Mhz frontman, Camu Tao, then sure - why not.

So I transferred 500 dollars extra to his account, so the total was now 1000 $ (if you are thinking, damn that boy was naive - you are right). He sent me 2-3 different beats from Camu Tao and I picked a really dope beat with a rock sample in it and he told me he would record to it.

Time pa**ed. He came to Copenhagen to perform with The High & Mighty (Mr. Eon & Mighty Mi) and Copywrite. I caught up with him backstage, and he was like “ohh yeah, what’s good man - good to see you” and he introduced me to all the other heads on the tour. I sat with the guys backstage and I asked him, what was delaying the verse? He told me that his CD-burner had been to the repairshop, but that his girl had just picked it up, so it was ready to go when he got back home.

Some time after, I recieved a low quality MP3 with his verse over the “rock” beat I had picked. The verse was dope and it was really cool. I thought to myself: finally, some results. After that, the deal was for him to send me the verse and beat in seperate channels so I could mix the thing. But that was the last thing I got from him. Stuck with a useless low-quality mp3 with his verse on the beat, I was growing pretty impatient.

So I didn’t hear from him for a while (he didn’t answer my emails and some of them even bounced back), and I decided to call him (he had previously given me his phone no.) I picked up the phone and dialed the no. provided by him. I can hear he picks up the phone, I introduce my self and suddenly he changes his voice to a deeper voice, telling me that I must have gotten the wrong number. Now, with such a unique voice, I could tell that it was him to begin with. But why he would do it, was beyond my imagination. I kinda figured that this was going nowhere and hung up - pretty disillusioned from the whole thing.

To top that, I found out that the Canadian group, “Project Wyze” had featured Cage on a song on their album. Only problem was, he was using the same verse, that he sent to me. That’s when I finally (yes, finally) figured out that I had been hustled. Ridiculed, robbed and mislead by my idol (at that time). I learned an expensive lesson that day. I would never have dreamt, that such a thing could happen to me. I had even told everybody around me that I was doing a track with him - and now, that had been taken away from me - I felt as if I had lost all credibility. No need to air out how I feel about the guy - let’s just say that he owes me 1000 $ and maybe an apology? Thanks for breaking my heart (no-homo).

As far as Camu Tao’s role in this. Let’s just say I’m a decent guy - I wouldnt dream of badmouthing dead people. And because of that, that part of the story will probably never see the light of day. R.I.P Camu Tao.

General Discussion / Kanye West, Method Man, Redman, Common Sued
« on: May 23, 2008, 03:38:19 PM »
Rappers Kanye West, Method Man, Redman, Common and their record companies were sued on Thursday by late U.S. jazz musician Joe Farrell's daughter, who accused them of using her father's music without approval.

The lawsuit, filed by Kathleen Firrantello in the U.S. District Court in New York, names the rappers along with various labels owned by Universal Music Group./

None of the record companies or representatives for the rappers were immediately available for comment.

The lawsuit said all the rappers used portions of Farrell's 1974 musical composition "Upon This Rock" in three separate songs -- West in "Gone," Common in "Chi-City" and Method Man and Redman in their song "Run 4 Cover."

Firrantello is seeking punitive damages of at least $1 million and asked that no further copies of the songs be made, sold or performed, according to the lawsuit.

General Discussion / Quinton's X-wife wants his fortune
« on: May 19, 2008, 08:31:33 AM »
SMH
Jobless and virtually broke, the estranged wife of international footballer Quinton Fortune has gone to court to try to recover some of the comforts she was used to as a Wag.

But Kim Fortune says her husband, a former Manchester United midfielder, has frozen
The 31-year-old has filed papers at the Cape High Court setting out her intention to apply for an order that Quinton immediately

pay her more than R1-million to buy a new car and furniture, and R50000 for her monthly living expenses at least until the divorce is finalised.
She “urgently” needs R500000 to buy an Audi S3 with the “extras I was previously used to”, including “silk Nappa leather” finishes, an iPod console and R7000 seat heating.
In court papers, Kim points out that this car is a far cry from the approximately R1-million Audi A8 she drove in the UK.
She also wants “at least R550000” to furnish a two-bedroom apartment in upmarket Cartwright’s Corner in Cape Town, to bring it more in line with the homes she shared with Quinton — one of which had its own R900000 home cinema.

The footballer “refused to allow” her to take any of their imported furniture and expensive appliances from their former shared home, she says.
Kim instituted divorce proceedings in March, citing a breakdown in their marriage caused by Quinton’s alleged affairs.
She said Quinton “had a number of unduly intimate and adulterous relationships with third parties”.

She says Quinton has not paid her any maintenance since she left him in January, and she can no longer maintain herself with her credit card .

Some of the monthly expenses she lists are R12000 for cosmetics, R10000 for toiletries, R10000 for music CDs, “tapes and batteries”, R20000 for clothes and R2500 for monthly membership fees for the exclusive Quintessentially club, which provides members with 24-hour concierge services.
For groceries she needs R8000 a month and for “milk and bread,” another R900; dining out, movies and shows and museums would cost her R4400, she says, and she needs R12000 for books and gifts.

Her monthly expenses, excluding holidays, amount to more than R100000 — but she says she only wants half of this from Quinton.

She says that previously there was no limit on the amount she spent on household goods and that her personal expenses alone came to more than £5000 (about R70 000) a month.
She says Quinton, who she believes has recently signed to play for Blackburn Rovers after being released by Bolton Wanderers last year, was “living a luxurious and extravagant lifestyle”.
Quinton did not respond to a February request from Kim’s attorney, Derek Wille, for a full disclosure of his financial position. But Kim estimates his net salary to be about R90 000 a week, based on his previous earnings.
She believes it could be at least double this if match fees, bonuses and other fees are taken into account.
Kim says she hasn’t worked since mid-2000 and attended to Quinton’s personal affairs during their marriage.
She says she is now unemployed and is not “trained to fill any specific position in the South African economy”.
She is also claiming R75 000 towards her legal costs.
Quinton has until tomorrow to oppose the application, but lawyers have indicated the parties may settle the issue of interim maintenance out of court.
