General Discussion / SnowGoonz!!!
« on: March 22, 2007, 11:29:41 AM »
Peep this for those of you who dont know the roots of the Snowgoons are earthed in the late 90s. Det, a German producer linked up with DJ Illegal to form a two man production duo. They started producing tracks for German hip hop groups, as well as American up-and-comers. As time progressed, and their rep grew bigger the duo decided to expand the operation a little and added two more members to the squad in 2006, Torben and DJ Waxwork. While each member has a distinctive style to their sound, cohesively they are second to none. Having just inked a deal with Babygrande, the collective are now ready to attack the American hip hop scene with force. Their new LP, German Lugers dropped 2/27. The upcoming album features a veritable who's who of today's underground elite: Sean Price, Living Legends, Jus Allah, Chief Kamachi, Rasco, Wise Intelligent of Poor Righteous Teachers, O.C.,Wordsworth, Reef The Lost Cauze, MED, Virtuoso, Last Emperor, Doujah Raze, Born Unique, Celph Titled, Majik Most, Edo G, J. Sands, Baby Blak, Craig G, Breez Evahflowin', Pumpkinhead of Brooklyn Academy & many more

Talib Kweli’s rollercoaster ride of hip hop credibility has just seen another free fall. Kweli has recorded two songs about the Toyota Matrix, one of which will be featured in a commercial for the car. You can see a behind-the-scenes video documenting the creation of the songs here; it’s mostly just shots of him getting in and out of a Toyota Matrix and putting CDs into the car’s stereo, but it’s captivating nonetheless. Now, any UGHH staffer will tell you that I support the merging of art and commerce; (A-Ronious thinks I am going to hell because I could care less how much money Puffy makes every time he sticks his tongue out and limps in a circle like a drunken amputee), However, I am unsure how I feel about Kweli’s latest hijinks. This is a guy who put out two cla**ic albums by most hip hop heads standards (Blackstar and Reflection Eternal), then came with a hot solo debut Quality), which smelled like a field of fresh roses compared to the stale Frito and ball sweat stink that was the Beautiful Struggle, next he bashed his fans online and continued to release sub par songs, and subsequently lost support from almost all hip hop fan bases. But then, he teamed up with Madlib and released some dope music in the form of Liberation, which regained all of those downtrodden fans who kept saying how Mos was the best part of Blackstar only to realize that he recorded himself making bowel movements for three weeks and named it True Magic; we should have known something was up when Mos took time off from his burgeoning acting career to NOT pick any album artwork or write any liner notes for his album, claiming that the lack of packaging would only emphasize the strength of the music. Anyway, I forgot what my point was, but I’m quite sure that writing a song specifically for the Toyota Matrix, which gets superb gas mileage by the way, will incite the “sell out” war cries of naive hip hop fans across the globe who think that hip hop can be used as a weapon against poverty/crime/war/capitalism/Boba Fett, etc. I guess if I had to pick a side I would support Kweli in his decision to feed his family, even if pimple-faced Ugly Duckling fans who still live with their parents may have a moral problem with me saying that and him using music to peddle automobile-

M.O.P. is getting their drank on with Sizzurp. The Mash Out Posse will promote Sizzurp with product placement in new song lyrics, music videos, and while on tour worldwide with tour van wraps, stage banners and on-stage pours. M.O.P. is about to launch their first worldwide tour after being signed by 50 Cent for his label G-Unit. G-Unit will distribute the new CD, which is expected to be released in May 2007.

The music from "7:30," M.O.P.'s first song to be released from the new CD, has been picked up by CBS Sports for their basketball broadcasts and the New York Knicks, both of which are using the music in their "sound beds." The video for "7:30," which has Sizzurp placed in the video, is now being re-edited for MTV and is expected to be broadcast nationally by March 1, 2007.

Sizzurp is the first product to roll out from Straight Up Brands following their recent acquisition of Rappin Brands. Sizzurp, a Purple Punch Liqueur, is a blend of premium imported cognac, vodka and exotic fruit juices. In related news, I’m officially sponsored by Steel Reserve.

Hot Traxxx / Beanie Sigels Criminal wayz
« on: March 16, 2007, 08:37:43 AM »
More developments in the saga that is Beanie Sigel’s criminal history. Yesterday Prosecutors extended probation for the rapper after he failed to inform his probation officer that he was recently stopped TWICE by Philly police while driving around with convicted felons (i.e. his friends?). Mack also tested positive for codeine and morphine in a December drug test. Oh Beanie! The probation stems from an earlier arrest in 2003 when he was involved in a police chase and officers found a stolen gun, a cache of prescription drugs, and a small bag of marijuana in the vehicle.

General Discussion / Rhymesayers Sign to Warner bros!
« on: March 16, 2007, 08:21:41 AM »
Talk about a come up. Rhymesayers Entertainment, the Minneapolis based record label that M.F. DOOM, Atmosphere and Brother Ali all call home, recently announced that is has partnered with Warner Bros. Independent Label Group. The agreement will provide Rhymesayers with that Warner marketing scrilla, distro, and sale of services. Does this mean that Rhymesayers sold out to the majors? Never that. They are basically breaking bread with the big boys so that everybody at the table walks away with benefits.

"More than our desire to be independent, Rhymesayers first and foremost has always wanted to be in a position to help our artists reach their individual goals and aspirations," explained Rhymesayers President Brent Sayers via a statement. "ILG understood that and has provided us with an extremely unique opportunity to do this. Under this new deal, we can remain as independent as we have ever been while utilizing individual select services as needed." Congrats to the crew over at Rhymesayers. Bout time the majors recognized the talent ya’ll got.

General Discussion / Elp- beef wit...
« on: March 15, 2007, 11:20:49 AM »
EL-Producto has launched into angry tirade against his former label Rawkus Records in his recent blog post. For those that have followed El-P over the years, you already know he’s hated the razorblade since he left the label years ago to form Def Jux. This is underground hip hop beef at it’s best. Angry over a picture they distributed on the internet showing the Def Jux honcho chillin’ with Diddy, EL-P believed the label was attempting to smear his reputation as he prepares to release his incredible new album, I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead. Here are some excerpts from his blog:

“These twisted, corrupted shit eaters (Rawkus RecordS) who stole money from everyone they worked with, fired their staff a few days before Christmas, signed amazing artists and never put their records out, blocked artists they had under contract from signing to other labels even after they had driven their label in to the ground and weren't even functioning, sycophantically attempted to attach themselves to anyone in the mainstream they possibly could, etc. etc. etc...”

“well here they are again. the "new" rawkus. launching again for any sad sap of an artist who wants to wake up one day and realize they are getting screwed, for any staff member who wants an honest pay only to eventually realize they are disposable. the "new" rawkus. the ones who are literally dispersing questionnaires in Europe to fans asking what type of music they should be releasing. the "new" rawkus. so these motherf***ers take the picture that was taken with my camera and post it up on their site with a news piece entitled something to the effect of: "company flows el-p and puffy?" that's it. as though the picture is some sort of statement about me. as though the picture is proof of me "selling out". then they have one of their staff members go around to various message boards like OKAYPLAYER and the post about it in any and every post about my new album. oh yeah? you like the el-p record? check out this picture of him and puffy! oh word? you think el is a dope producer? check out this picture of him and puffy!”

RAWKUS RESPONSE

Well.. It didn’t take long. Here is Rawkus’s Official Response.

“We thought the photo of you and Puff was cool. We posted it without comment. We immediately removed it upon request. But you had to go there... Straight attack our credibility and intentions with that slanderous rant. Keep in mind WE HAVEN'T SAID A WORD to you since 1998. Why are you salty? Be happy, you are successful and rich. Regardless of our obvious distaste for one another, we’ve admired Def Jux's success and sincerely respect your roster of artists. But you had to go there......

El-P, your recent post has drawn attention to our intentions as promoters and marketers in the Hip Hop community. Haters, like you, seem to suffer from historical amnesia. We thought it was time we directly addressed the Hiphop community and post some facts.

Our mission at Rawkus.com is to create a vibrant supportive community for hip hop, including all factions and styles. The post showing El-P and Puffy was in no way meant to discredit El-P as an artist or producer. Puffy is a mogul and his appearance with an underground artist like El-P was news worthy and interesting. However, we have a strict policy against creating bullshit beefs and reserve the right to delete comments and posts that overtly create hate instead of fostering creative debate. This post was removed once it was brought to our attention that El-P was offended by it.

For the past ten years our mission has been to help artists promote and make money---a mission we were very successful at. We have contributed HEAVY financial resources into promoting Black Star, Mos Def, Kweli, Pharoahe Monche, Big L and many other underground artists in our history of Soundbombing, Lyricist Lounge, and 100s of 12” releases.

Our history is full of success and breakthroughs. Mos Def and Kweli have sold almost 1.5 million albums each and are both powerful stars now. While we worked together, Pharoahe Monche had two huge hits (“Simon Says” and “Oh No”) and sold almost 300,000 albums. We supported Common during his label
transition by successfully promoting “Respiration” and “1999.” Big L went GOLD! The Soundbombing and Lyricist Lounge compilations sold over 1 million copies. Remember "Body Rock”, “Definition", "Ms. Fat Booty", "Umi Says”, “Simon Says", "The Light”, “Respiration", "My Life", "The Blast", "Get By", "Oh No", "Flamboyant”, “Fortified Live", "Universal Magnetic" and "End to End Burners"?

Of course we could not hit home runs every time, and some VERY talented artists experienced frustration as Rawkus hit temporary obstacles in dealing with MCA/Universal in 2003-2004. Everybody knows how treacherous the music industry is. If you stay in it long enough, you will have your fair share of doors slammed in your face- we have! You stay in the game because your will to succeed, far out weighs your fear of defeat. We are proud of RAWKUS.COM's growing community of driven artists and individuals. While the game has changed, our mission at RAWKUS is still on point; market and promote NEW under-appreciated artists and respect the older generation of hip hop. We firmly believe the community should decide the value of music, not critics or haters.

Marijuana - The Wonder Drug
Lester Grinspoon
The Boston Globe
3-3-7

CAMBRIDGE, Ma**achusetts -- A new study in the journal Neurology is being hailed as una**ailable proof that marijuana is a valuable medicine. It is a sad commentary on the state of modern medicine that we still need "proof" of something that medicine has known for 5,000 years.

The study, from the University of California at San Francisco, found that smoked marijuana was effective at relieving the extreme pain of a debilitating condition known as peripheral neuropathy.

It was a study of HIV patients, but a similar type of pain caused by damage to nerves afflicts people with many other illnesses including diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

Neuropathic pain is notoriously resistant to treatment with conventional pain drugs. Even powerful and addictive narcotics like morphine and OxyContin often provide little relief. This study leaves no doubt that marijuana can safely ease this type of pain.

As all marijuana research in the United States must be, the new study was conducted with government-supplied marijuana of notoriously poor quality. So it probably underestimated the potential benefit.

This is all good news, but it should not be news at all. In the 40-odd years I have been studying the medicinal uses of marijuana, I have learned that the recorded history of this medicine goes back to ancient times.

In the 19th century it became a well-established Western medicine whose versatility and safety were unquestioned. From 1840 to 1900, American and European medical journals published over 100 papers on the therapeutic uses of marijuana, also known as cannabis.

Our knowledge has advanced greatly over the years. Scientists have identified over 60 unique constituents in marijuana, called cannabinoids, and we have learned much about how they work. We have also learned that our own bodies produce similar chemicals, called endocannabinoids.

The mountain of accumulated anecdotal evidence that pointed the way to the present and other clinical studies also strongly suggests there are a number of other devastating disorders and symptoms for which marijuana has been used for centuries.

They deserve the same careful, methodologically sound research.

While few such studies have so far been completed, all have lent weight to what medicine already knew but had largely forgotten or ignored: Marijuana is effective at relieving nausea and vomiting, spasticity, appetite loss, certain types of pain and other debilitating symptoms. And it is extraordinarily safe - safer than most medicines prescribed every day.

If marijuana were a new discovery rather than a well-known substance carrying cultural and political baggage, it would be hailed as a wonder drug.

The pharmaceutical industry is scrambling to isolate cannabinoids and synthesize analogs and to package them in non-smokable forms. In time, companies will almost certainly come up with products and delivery systems that are more useful and less expensive than herbal marijuana.

However, the analogs they have produced so far are more expensive than herbal marijuana, and none has shown any improvement over the plant nature gave us to take orally or to smoke.

We live in an antismoking environment. But as a method of delivering certain medicinal compounds, smoking marijuana has some real advantages: The effect is almost instantaneous, allowing the patient to fine-tune his or her dose to get the needed relief without intoxication.

Smoked marijuana has never been demonstrated to have serious pulmonary consequences, but in any case the technology to inhale these cannabinoids without smoking marijuana already exists as vaporizers that allow for smoke-free inhalation.

Hopefully the UCSF study will add to the pressure on the U.S. government to rethink its irrational ban on the medicinal use of marijuana - and its destructive attacks on patients and caregivers in states that have chosen to allow such use.

Rather than admit they have been mistaken all these years, federal officials can cite "important new data" and start revamping outdated and destructive policies.

Such legislation would bring much-needed relief to millions suffering from cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, arthritis and other debilitating illnesses.

Lester Grinspoon, an emeritus professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, is the coauthor of "Marijuana, the Forbidden Medicine." This article first appeared in The Boston Globe.
