FRESH COAST STAND UP!

Alan Daniel Maman, better known as The Alchemist, is one of hip-hop’s leading producers. He hails from affluent Beverly Hills, California. After rising to prominence in the late 1990s as a close a**ociate of Dilated Peoples, he went on to produce for many of hip-hop’s leading artists in the 2000s.

As a teen, Al began to identify strongly with the rebellious lyrics and urban sounds of hip-hop, and he began writing his own lyrics as a creative outlet. He joined up with other like-minded artists who wrote lyrics and rebelled strongly against their “uptight” suburban surroundings, among whom were Shifty Shellshock of Crazy Town, Evidence of Dilated Peoples and Scott Caan, son of James Caan. They would often hang out in urban areas of Los Angeles and participated in typical teenage rebellious activities like partying, smoking marijuana, and general mischief.

Al and Scott decided to become a duo named The Whooliganz. While rhyming at a party in L.A., they attracted the attention of B-Real of Cypress Hill. He invited the teens to join his crew, The Soul a**a**ins, which also included the groups House of Pain and Funkdoobiest. In 1993, the Whooliganz released their first single, “Put Your Handz Up.” The song received little radio airplay and their record label, Tommy Boy Records, decided to shelve their album. Rejected, Scott focused his creative energy on acting while Al became interested in process of making hip-hop beats.

Producers - Discussion / Beat Magician of the Day: Nottz
« on: February 14, 2011, 09:02:25 AM »

Nottz has produced for some of the biggest names in hip hop including Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West, The Game, Notorious B.I.G., Scarface, Canibus, J Dilla, and G-Unit. Some of his earliest production work was on the Rawkus Records compilation Lyricist Lounge, Volume One, in 1998. From there he landed three tracks on Busta Rhymes' Extinction level Event LP, after Rhymes stumbled across one of his beat tapes.

Like many other hip hop producers to emerge before the 2000s, Nottz borrows samples from old soul records and old movies soundtracks to reconstruct into new beats. West Coast hip hop icon, Dr. Dre, has named Nottz as one of his favourite producers, and has selected him as one of the few guest producers on his much delayed, yet anticipated Detox album.

Nottz also has a group called D.M.P., which stands for "Durte Muzik Prahdukshun". They released an EP in 2004 and a full length album on Koch Records, titled Nottz Presents D.M.P., in 2005.

On October 26, 2010, Nottz released his first solo album, You Need This Music under his label, Raw Koncept. The album features Nottz as an MC as well as a producer. He is also working on rapper Game upcoming album The R.E.D. Album, after having 3 of his beats on Game's last two albums Doctor's Advocate and LAX. He has worked with female rapper Rah Digga on her long-awaited comeback album, Cla**ic, and it has been released on September 14, 2010 under his label. Nottz also worked with rapper Asher Roth on their collaboration EP entitled Rawth, released for free on the internet, on December 27, 2010.

Dutton grew up in Capitol Hill and moved to the North End of Seattle when he was 15. He started making music on a Casio keyboard in 1992. He attended the University of Washington and gave a tape of his music to a friend who worked in a local record store. One of the store’s other employees, the DJ Mr. Supreme heard the tape, and when he set up his Conception Records label, he used Dutton to create backing tracks. The first record he produced was Eclipse’s World Premier. His early influences included Pete Rock, DJ Premier, and Marley Marl. Dutton has worked with local artists as well as major names from further afield. He has produced tracks by artists such as De La Soul, Strange Fruit Project, Prozack Turner, MF DOOM, E-40, John Cena, Planet Asia, Nas, and 50 Cent. He is part of the G-Unit production team, The Money Management Group.

His first album credited to Jake One, White Van Music, was released in October 2008 on Rhymesayers Entertainment, and featured contributions from Brother Ali, Young Buck, De La Soul, M.O.P., Freeway, MF DOOM, and E-40.

He has had tracks included on the soundtracks to films such as Get Rich or Die Tryin’ (50 Cent’s I Don’t Know Officer), The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (“Jake Alert”), and Gone Baby Gone

Producers - Discussion / Beat Magician of the Day: DJ Khalil
« on: February 10, 2011, 10:33:55 AM »

Youngest son of former UCLA player and coach and NBA player Walt Hazzard. From underground heavyweight to mainstream success, Khalil Abdul-Rahman better known by his current stage name DJ Khalil, Los Angeles based producer who has been in the biz for over 15 years.

The last few years have been ground breaking for him as a producer. Placements with multi-platinum artist, The Game “Da Shit” (Doctor’s Advocate), Jay Z “I Made It” (Kingdom Come), and Talib Kweli “Oh My Stars” Feat. Musiq Soulchild & “Hostile Gospel Pt. 2” Feat. Sizzla (Ear Drum).

Most recently he delivered 50 Cent’s latest commercial smash hit “I’ll Still Kill” Feat AKON on the multi-platinum selling Curtis LP.

In 2008 he picked up right were he left off with his production for Jim Jones commercial single “Love Me No More” Feat Cobe (Harlem’s American Gangster) and a musical score of the horror film titled “The Portal”. He also created tracks for an upcoming animated feature film, “The Blockheads”

Early production is already in the mix with Dr. Dre’s highly anticipated “Detox”, NAS, Kelis, and Busta Rhymes among several others.

These recent accomplishments have catapulted his name as one of the music industry hottest new producers.

Rewind to his early days, Khalil’s pa**ion for music began as a youth growing up in Los Angeles listening to everything from “NWA” to “A Tribe Called Quest” exposing him to the best of what hip hop music was delivering from both coasts during a time which is now remembered as “The Glory Years” in hip hop.

It was during this time that a young DJ Khalil was heavily influenced and knew he wanted to be a part of the rapidly growing hip hop movement that influenced many kids during this era.

After purchasing his first pair of technique turntables and years of perfecting his skills as a DJ, Khalil would be influenced by the likes of DJ Premiere, Pete Rock, & Ali Shaheed. These incredible individuals would eventually spark the pa**ion he had in him to produce his own music.

This led to the purchase of his first beat machine, the ASR10 made by Ensoniq. Making his transition from DJ to producer and giving birth to his official production/artist name, DJ Khalil.

He developed his pa**ion for music from his father who to this day possesses an incredible jazz collection. This not only inspired the young producer but it exposed him to thousands of famous Jazz musicians, which helped develop and mold his sound to what you hear today.

While still in High School he shared a bond with another talented up and coming artist from Los Angeles by the name of Chace Infinite. The two met mutually through the friendship their parents shared and the love for their first pa**ion as youth, Basketball.

It was during this time that Khalil finally had someone he could bounce and share ideas with musically and begin his long journey through the winding roads of the music industry.

Upon graduation from North Hollywood High, he enrolled in the Historically Black University, Moorehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. The move would prove to be beneficial for him. At Moorehouse College he shared the same hallways with the likes of many striving young artist and soon to be executives who are currently major players in the music business today. It would also prove to be a time where the majority of his growth and experimentation as a Producer would play a significant role in what is now known as his unique signature sound.

He continued to develop as an artist eventually forming a group called “Self Scientific” in the early 90’s exposing the Hip Hop community to a series of underground produced cla**ics. However, it wasn’t until 1993 when Khalil produced the underground hit “Return” that they made their official introduction and solidified him as one of the newest producers to keep an ear open for.

After the success of ‘Return” and a series of 12’ vinyl singles his group eventually landed a development deal with Loud Records in1995. Although things didn’t pan out like he expected, the knowledge he gained would give him the inspiration to produce two cla**ic Self Scientific albums. “The Self Science” in 2000 and “Change” in 2006.

In 2003 while continuing to establish himself as a young producer on the rise, Khalil caught the attention of west coast Legend and co- founder of NWA, Dr. Dre. Dr. Dre saw great potential in Khalil as a producer and felt with his guidance he could help develop his sound to great heights.

“I want to sign you as a staff producer” Dre told Khalil, “I want you as a part of the family”

Persistence and countless hours perfecting his sound paid off landing him a slot on Dr. Dre’s production staff at Aftermath Records.

“I grew up listening to Dre, so to be working with him and the fact that he really like my music is dope”, explains Khalil.

His new affiliation would allow him to produce for the likes of major artist like Keith Murray “Candi Bar”, Cypress Hill “The Only Way”, XZIBIT “Beware Of Us”, Raekwon “Ice Cream Part 2”, and G-Unit’s 50 Cent “Lay You Down”.

Even though he was beginning to receive early success with mainstream artist he still continued to inject underground artists with his infectious sound.

Ras Ka** “Kiss Of Death”, Sway & King Tech “Better Days”, Planet Asia “It’s On”, Strong Arm Steady (Blacksmith/Warner Bros.), Evidence (“All Said & Done”/The Weatherman LP) and newly acquired Aftermath Recording Artist Bishop Lamont have and are still benefiting from this musical talent.

Khalil’s never ending appetite for challenging himself musically has brought him to his most recent personal venture, “The New Royales”.

This hybrid group made up of himself and a group of very talented songwriters / musicians based out of Canada have combined his distinct sound with the “Royales” alternative rock melodies making the match a perfect alliance.

Producers - Discussion / Beat Magician of the Day: Kev Brown
« on: February 09, 2011, 08:19:13 AM »
The true genius behind Jazzy Jeff's The Magnificent...get ya learn on!

Kev Brown made his debut as a featured artist on Marley Marl’s BBE Beat Generation series instalment Re-Entry (2001). His guest appearance alongside Grap Luva left an impression on the underground and he subsequently contributed a track to De La Soul’s AOI: Bionix later that year.

Kev Brown continued to build his resume with contributions to DJ Jazzy Jeff’s The Magnificent (2002). As a then-member of Jazzy Jeff’s production-for-hire unit A Touch Of Jazz, Brown contributed no less than 7 tracks to the project yet it wasn’t until his remix of Jay-Z’s The Black Album, aptly titled The Brown Album was released in January, 2004 that he began to receive recognition.

As the first producer to do so (to date there are more than 100 submitted remixes of the project), Brown made use of Jay-Z’s starpower and commercial appeal. Although his time in the spotlight was somewhat overshadowed by DJ Danger Mouse’s The Grey Album (2004), a remix project of the same album noticeable for its use of The Beatles’ White Album (1968) as a soundbed for Jay-Z acapellas, Kev Brown was nevertheless able to garner enough of a following to embark on a solo career.

After numerous productions and collaborations with artists throughout 2003 and 2004, Brown made his debut in 2005 with I Do What I Do through the independent Up Above imprint. The single, “Life’s A Gamble”, followed in late 2005. Kev Brown is currently working with Freddie Foxxx on a full-length project.

Producers - Discussion / Beat Magician of the Day: DJ Premier
« on: February 07, 2011, 10:16:25 AM »

Premier is known for producing the majority of Gang Starr's songs as well as many of the Gang Starr Foundation's songs. His work also includes production for heavyweight rappers such as Nas, Jay-Z, Mos Def, 50 Cent, Scarface, Big L, Lord Finesse, M.O.P., The Notorious B.I.G., D.I.T.C., The LOX, Royce Da 5'9", Redman, Ghostface Killah, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Fat Joe, Snoop Dogg, rock band Limp Bizkit and pop singer Christina Aguilera amongst a plethora of others.

Premier collaborated with MC Jeru the Damaja on the album The Sun Rises in the East, released in 1994, as well as the 1996 follow-up, Wrath of the Math. Also from the Gang Starr Foundation, Premier produced and supervised Group Home's Livin' Proof; although overlooked at the time of its 1995 release, the album has since come to find similar acclaim. Among others in that are closely tied to the Gang Starr Foundation who have worked with DJ Premier include Afu Ra, Krumbsnatcha, Big Shug, Smiley the Ghetto Child, and NYGz. He recently produced the majority of Blaq Poet's The Blaqprint in 2009 & will produce the entirety of NYG'z debut album.

DJ Premier's style of production epitomizes the New York sound of his earlier peers. He is known for sampling jazz, funk, and soul artists, as well as sampling an artist's past work when creating a new track for that same artist. In addition, his encyclopedic memory of hip-hop lyrics allows him to distinctively speak with his hands by scratching in lyrics from several different songs to construct new phrases. Premier's beats are known for his oft-imitated combinations of short vocal samples, often from multiple artists, to create a chorus. Premier has also experimented with atonal samples that are not confined to soul, jazz, and funk. For example, he sampled chopped up seminal electro-acoustic music from the 1960s on the track “Mental Stamina” by Jeru the Damaja.

In an interview with XXL Magazine, DJ Premier was asked how his sound evolved, to which he replied, "Marley Marl is my number one inspiration. Jam Master Jay, Mixmaster Ice and UTFO. Grandmaster D and Whodini. DJ Cheese, Grandmaster Flash, Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa. Jazzy Jay, even Cut Creator. Seeing them do what they do. It’s black music, it’s black culture, it comes from the ghetto. How can you not relate to ghetto people when that’s the rawest form of blackness? Even though it’s not a good place in regards to the economy and how bad people have it in the neighborhood, the realism’s there, and that’s what we were born out of. So I very much pay respect by doing the same type of music in return." DJ Premier attended Prairie View A & M University and may have been influenced by the musical atmosphere at the university

Legend of note...

His first major exposure to the hip-hop audience was in 1987 with Marley Marl, as a DJ on New York's WBLS radio show "In Control With Marley Marl." The 17-year-old Phillips was recognized by the listening audience as the man "puttin' in work", as he would use double copies of each record to cut up every song he played, when most New York DJs would only use double copies on every third or fourth song. Propelled by the growth of his popularity, he began producing in the early 1990s. In 1991 he joined with CL Smooth to release the EP All Souled Out.

The following year saw Mecca and the Soul Brother, the first of two full-length albums, released to critical acclaim and hailed as a cla**ic by many. During this period, Pete Rock began to produce songs for other acts, such as "Down With the King" for Run-DMC and "The World Is Yours" for Nas, as well remix singles for Jeru the Damaja ("You Can't Stop the Prophet"), Public Enemy ("Shut 'em Down"), and The Notorious B.I.G. ("Juicy" - the original of which was allegedly based on Rock's own demo). Pete and CL followed up Mecca in 1994 with The Main Ingredient. Like its predecessor, The Main Ingredient also received wide critical acclaim. However, soon after the album's release, the duo split and went their separate ways, with Rock focusing on production work for other artists.

In 1995, he formed the group INI, with Grap Luva, Rob-O, and I Love H.I.M. and released the cla**ic 12" "Fakin' Jax". The trio recorded an album, Center of Attention(originally named The Life I Live), which was heavily bootlegged and remained unreleased until 2003, when BBE Records picked it up for distribution. The release of this album was coupled with another previously unreleased mid-'90s Pete Rock-produced album, DeDa's The Original Baby Pa.

In 1996, he appeared on the Red Hot Organization's compilation CD, America is Dying Slowly, alongside Wu-Tang Clan, Coolio, and Fat Joe, among others. The CD, meant to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic among African American men, was heralded as a masterpiece by The Source magazine.

:Production:

Pete Rock builds his beats from samples, the majority of which are taken from obscure R&B, funk, and jazz records. Early on in his career he would also sample drum breaks such as Black Heat's "Zimba Ku" for Heavy D & The Boyz's "Letter To The Future". Pete Rock heavily used the E-mu SP-1200 as well as the AKAI [S950]later moving onto using the MPC—for his productions. Pete Rock tends to use the samples as palettes for his beats, chopping (cutting the sample into smaller parts), filtering (altering the frequencies of the sample), and layering several samples, often within the same song. While this technique was applied long before Rock (on De La Soul's Three Feet High and Rising or the work of The Bomb Squad for example), Rock's work is distinctive for the way in which he uses samples to achieve a hazy, droning effect. He is also noted for his resonant ba**lines, horn samples, and gritty sounding drums. His beats often sound as though they were being played from an old vinyl record; he samples many of his sounds straight off these records.

Another trait of his, more so in the earlier part of his career, is the way he uses horn samples to supplement his grooves. With perhaps the most famous example being "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" (on which he uses a horn sample from Tom Scott's "Today"), Rock has also used horns on several other productions such as "Straighten It Out", Public Enemy's "Shut 'Em Down", Rah Digga's "What They Call Me", and A.D.O.R.'s "Let It All Hang Out".

Along with Gang Starr, The Roots and A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock played a large role in the fusing of jazz and funk music into Hip hop. The aforementioned "Reminisce..." withstanding, Rock used many jazz samples on his album Mecca and The Soul Brother, such as Cannonball Adderley's "Country Preacher", for the song "Return of the Mecca", or "Capricorn" for the song "In the House" from The Main Ingredient. Pete Rock's heavy use of intro and outro beats has also been widely influential. To introduce feature songs, he often plays a short instrumental excerpt, completely different from the rest of the song. Aside from their role as transitions, these are widely regarded as a way of displaying his large collection and as a challenge to other hip-hop producers to identify the records that the breaks come from. Mecca & the Soul Brother and The Main Ingredient use intro/outro beats on nearly every track to great effect, and the tradition continues to the present on Rock's recent releases.

Producers - Discussion / Beat Magician of the Day: Illmind
« on: February 03, 2011, 10:32:41 AM »
One of my modern faves...

Participated in Beat Society, competing against well-known acts like Kanye West and Just Blaze. Illmind has created music for underground artists such as Little Brother, Boot Camp Clik, Akrobatik, Supastition, and El Da Sensei. At Sha Money XL's Money Management production company he has produced tracks for 50 Cent, Eminem, Redman, Scarface, LL Cool J, Talib Kweli and others.

In 2005, Illmind collaborated with producer Symbolyc One, releasing an album entitled The Art of OneMind on the BBE imprint. The album features Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah, Little Brother and several other notable artists. The single from the album was "The Broke Song", featuring Strange Fruit Project.

In 2006, Illmind produced tracks from Boot Camp Clik's album The Last Stand and Kenn Starr's Starr Status. He was responsible for "Cardiac" from Sean Price's 2007 album Jesus Price Superstar and produced four tracks on the 2007 Little Brother album, Getback. In 2008 he produced on Absolute Value by Akrobatik.

Illmind released a mixtape project featuring some of the artists he produced for throughout 2008 entitled Blaps, Rhymes & Life. It was followed by the second volume in early 2009, the third volume in the summer, and the fourth volume in December 2009.

He has been featured in multiple publications, such as Scratch ("Top 20 Best Producers"), Ma** Appeal, The Source, XXL, Hiphopgame and Hiphopdx.

In 2008-2010, Illmind taught at the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts at NYU.

The most slept on ever!!!...younger brother of Pete Rock...

Primarily active during the 1990s as a member of the group INI (composed of him, Rob-O, Ra**, Marco Polo and his older brother, Pete Rock). His first appearance was as a guest on the track "The Basement", included on Mecca and the Soul Brother (1992), the first album released by Pete Rock and his creative partner CL Smooth. Grap Luva is noted for being among the star-studded lineup of producers involved with The Best Part, the debut LP by the rapper J-Live. He has been largely silent in the 2000s; his activity has been limited to sporadic guest appearances on albums by Marley Marl, Kev Brown and the Nextmen. He currently resides in Washington, DC.

Some of my fave tracks he produced:

Asheru & Blue Black (Unspoken Heard) - Trackrunners (feat. J-Live & Grap Luva)

J-Live - Vampire Hunter J

Pete Rock - Half Man, Half Amazin (feat. Method Man)

Also check out this exclusive session he did with Damu the Fudgemunk revealing some material he has never released
