Haven't been out in a while so I decided to get involved last night.
So some of y'all who lived/frequented Jozi about 5-6 years ago might remember the hip hop nights at Berlin in Melville. Well the people who brought us those are back and at it in Greenside. I went there last night. Was kinda cool. Then went to Sway a bit later for a friend's birthday. The difference in the vibe at these places is quite stark. One is quite chilled. The music at Tokyo Star (Greenside) isn't overbearing so one can have a bit of a conversation while bobbing their head. The Roots, Common, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott are the type of sounds you can expect to hear. While Sway does what a club does - loud music. Drake, Future, and whoever else the most recent 'mtv/radio hiphop' artists are is what you get, plus the kwaito and house DJs. Both were really fun. Reaaaallllyyyy fun.
The hip hop community in Joburg is quite tiny though. Always the same people at these things. Which is be both a gift and a curse. Anyway, the point of this post is that if you're looking for a cool place in Jozi where you can listen to good hip hop, Tokyo Star in Greenside on a Sunday afternoon is the place to be.
