General Discussion / Re: Smart HipHoper's

Roxanne Shanté

Shanté's career began at the age of 14 when she encountered influential record producer Marley Marl, radio DJ Mr. Magic, and Tyrone Williams talking about how UTFO had canceled their appearance at a show they were promoting. Shanté offered to record an answer to UTFO's recent hit "Roxanne, Roxanne," which was about a woman named Roxanne who rejects the members of the group. The men agreed and the result was "Roxanne's Revenge," a confrontational and profane song in which Shanté a**umed the role of Roxanne, dissing UTFO over its own instrumental, which sparked the Roxanne Wars and made her a hip-hop star in the process. The single would go on to sell over 250,000 copies in the New York area alone. Aligning with the Juice Crew, most of her tracks would be produced by Marley Marl, with the exception of several songs on Shanté’s last album, 1992’s The Bitch is Back.

As an MC, Shanté has an extraordinary ability to freestyle (improvise) entire songs. "Roxanne’s Revenge" was an example, reportedly written and recorded at the same time in one take.[citation needed] However, the original version of the song was rerecorded after UTFO sued over the usage of its original backing track; the new version featured slightly different music with less profanity. People are most familiar with this version, which appears on the original 12-inch single released in 1984, with the original on the reverse side.

In 1990, Shanté and Rick James had a hit with "Loosey's Rap."

At the age of 25, Shanté retired from the recording industry to become a psychologist. She continues to make occasional guest appearances and live performances, as well as mentor young female hip-hop artists. She also took part in a series of Sprite commercials during the late 1990s. She is married and has one son and one daughter. She earned a PhD in psychology from Mount Mary University—paid for by her record label via an unusual contract clause—and has a practice in Queens. She is a vegan and owns Hip-Hop Ices ice cream parlor in Queens.

She will be portrayed by actress Keke Palmer in The Vapors, a film about the formation and rise of the Juice Crew.

(She made her label pay up to $200,000 in tuition, they never expected her to go all the way!)

Movie Talk / Tales From the Hood

Cla**ic>

"This ain't no funeral parlor. This ain't the terrordome. Welcome to HELL mothaf*#%@!" In not too many words I want to express my respect for one of the most underrated horror movies of the 90s. Like The Twilight Zone it is a segmented film (although all directed by Rusty Cundieff) that spans across a good variety of horror genres. The real horrorshow here, though, is the domestic/racial issues against the black community. Cleverly (and without being preachy or offensive to white people), Cundieff disguised his agenda with rich characters and a bone chilling conclusion.

The HIGHPOINT of this movie for me is the film's proverbial ringleader- a funeral parlor director. The man, brilliantly and hilariously underplayed by a bug-eyed Clarence Williams III, finds a stack of drugs he wants to sell to three young hoods. As you watch you begin to wonder what eerie agenda he really has in store. These scenes tie all the vignettes together.

Also, the final segment is a very profound statement on gang violence (although beware, this is the preachiest segment). I like to call it A Clockwork Black because it applies Anthony Burgress's idea of reversing violence onto the offender onto a gang leader called Krazy K. Those K's in his name aren't a mistake either! Cundieff underlines a necessary argument about between black-on-black violence by comparing K to a neo nazi.

Like any memorable work of horror, Tales remembers to keep its monsters metaphorical. Police brutality, domestic violence, racial profiling, and gang violence are the most hideous creatures found here. I complement Rusty Cundieff on a job well done there. Excessive campiness and at-times generic camera work keep this from being great, but nothing stops its relevance in the genre.

Producers - Discussion / Re: Clearing a sample
« on: April 05, 2008, 05:15:36 PM »
when it comes to 'Cleaning' the sample i tend to chose one which has less of a kick, snare and hi hats in it! otherwise eqing is cool! Coming to the issue of Sample Clearance are we really going out of our way to pay royalties in Africa. My experience with this is little, i have never got a reply from a label from overseas, I read a 9th wonder article that said if you don't sell more than a million you are not in danger! when fame and the big bucks come rolling in be wary?!?!

and why was zimbabwe omitted?

Zimbabwe,Zambia,Malawi and a span of other countries were excluded because we do not have enough representation on Channel O, in terms of videos, shows...which is true. We need to work harder...We have the talent! Though i suspect it might have something to do with budgets...could be the best excuse i was given.
