Durban FoOnK:

I´ll answer as much as I can but my advice is to try get hold of ewok (from Illuminating Shadows) on this site. He´ll give you all the info you want to know about durb´s hip hop and more.

I can´t tell u a hell of a lot cuz I´ve been doing my matric which takes the priority over my hip hop at the moment.

Top emcee is Raheem-he took part of battle in the year here in durbs and is representing durban in the hiphop indaba in cape town. F´n ill emcee-trust me!

Top djs are Lapse (1st in battle of the year in durbs) and Ghetto Smurf (2nd) , Papercut and MG Fresh (Illuminating Shadows)

Top groups-Illuminating Shadows- got ill tracks and an album if I´m not mistaken. Also GPM (Ghetto Prophecy Movement) + the Lab Rats.

BUT this is all in my opinion-all according to me.

At the BAT centre you´ll find hip hop sessions every thursday (usually starts bout 9 or 10ish). It´s not the best place to see durban´s talent though.

They also have gigs happening at the Playhouse Upstage Jazz Cafe + at Sideburn in Umbilo

Also Bling Free events at Albert Park.

There´s a lot more but I suggest speaking to Ewok-he´s a better source.

Don´t know what the cash story is about. Depends on the gig whether it gets full or not.

As a durbanite I say the scene here is beautiful! Yes, we still small but because of this we are not filled with suffocating posers and wanna-bes.The styles are purely underground-no fake a** shaking. Durban is very welcoming to fresh artists. It´s just a buildn´ hip hop community-we all support each other, help each other out. I´ve heard people who have visited durbs saying they just saw Ja Rule wanna-bes and shit. Well, I don´t know where those fools are looking ´cause where I go it´s pure local, it´s pure underground!

I suggest you come check it out for yourself but make sure you have informed connections here when you do otherwise you won´t know where to look.

Hope I helped.

It was Cypress Hill (and Dilated people) that first got me into hip hop. Thank you Cypress! Although Cypress also made me quite a stoner for a while  :-P

Times are hard and when the going gets tough
don´t leave; be a warrior; be strong; believe.
Believe in yourself-even if you lack the wealth.
Believe in yourself-even if you lack the health.
And if you won´t do it for yourself-do it for someone else.
´Nil illigitimus desperandum´-latin for don´t let the bastards get you down.
Just a family secret pa**ed down to me
and now pa**ed onto you-my hip hop family.
We´re one-a unity-the hip hop community.
If hip hop was human it would say: "Stop usin´ me!"
If hip hop was human it would say: "Stop abusin´ me!"
"This fake commercial a** bull shit is not amusin´ me!"
It´s fusin´ me-we tear down instead of build each other up
for the fight in the struggle against this world´s kuk.
Shut!-your mouth if you come to me with racism.
There will be no ´one colour´ replace-ism.
We are all one face-the very image of God.
Black, white, indian, coloured -equality´s visage.
A rainbow is nothing one colour on its own
but all together makes up this home-South Africa.
This beautiful country I am so proud of!
This beautiful country I´m so proud to be a part of!
South African hip hop is definately going somewhere-
to the top-to the center of every head´s heart.
See, I´m a hip hop head but I´m also a heart
´cause it´s hip hop that gets pumped through every vein of me
and even to the place visually unseen-my soul...-your soul.
So when you get stuck in the hole and it´s taking its toll
just remember what I told you.
That hip hop is each of us together as a whole
and if one of us goes-hip hop will know.  :-W

I haven´t checked out Hype, starting to think I should.
From my side, I´m not focusing on recording anthin´ yet + that´s why we need a group so we can get 100%, get our styles 100% and then focus on getting out there. Frankly I don´t think I´m ready for recording yet, but that´s another problem is that we all on different levels. So let´s just get to know each other first.

Me I write, sing, and wish I could freestyle.
So Naturelle, you a dj? That´s a good thing ´cause I´ve been thinking of starting myself. + you could help me out when I first begin. Anyway I´m gonna pm you about that now.

Yea distance is a bitch but if we can try regardless of the distance then let´s give it a go. Come on where all the sistas, we need all of ya!

Well I´m gonna "keep on sayin´ the same shit again and again, again and again like a scratched out cd or something" ´cause maybe then my message will get through better.

If i had to have seen a post like this a year ago-I would have chickened out. But like I´m saying I´m not a professional + that´s why we need each other-to learn, to teach, to become. Even if you think you wack hit me back-I mean hey, you might think I´m wack  ;-) There´s no point in waiting-the time is now girls!

I´m not quite sure how we gonna do this; point is we gonna do it. We just need to put our heads together (pun intended) and make it happen.

Big up Naturelle, we need more sistas like you!

yea I definatley agree with Naturelle. I´ve been tellin´ peeps this all the time. Khut en Joyn was pure Skwatta, f´n loved that album but for me Mkhukhu Funkshen didn´t reach my high expectations that Khut en Joyn left me with.

I dunno if I´m gonna get a response but I´m trying for the sake of all my sistas out there. I´m tryna get together a bunch of us to march through the S.A hip hop industry together. Now I´m not sayin´ we goin´ right now; I´m just sayin´ if any female emcees, poets, djs or whatever wanna start a group and start doing something together slowly then the opportunity is here. ´Cause frankly I think it´s a lot harder for us females to make it on our own. We can each teach each other a lot and bring our individual styles together. I was taking my own path but now I rate (as a good suggestion by Maddstone) that we should at least try and collaberate together and see what happens. And don´t be a chicken ´cause that won´t get you to the top. Come on sistas let´s work together on this, even if you not professional it doesn´t matter; we can all learn a lot form each other; help each other out. And I know you out there so take a chance. Even if you not so sure right now, it´s fine just hit me back anyway. Reply or pm me.
