Media / Re: Hype April/May
« on: March 25, 2009, 02:06:35 PM »
Hype is the only hip hop magazine. They dont have any competition. They should be able to take risks coz niggaz only check for them anyway. Even if they put a monkey on the cover niggaz would still cop it coz they are the only SA hip hop mag around. This is the time when they should be pushing the envelope coz they dont have to worry about competitors doing bigger numbers than them. I think most people would like to read what's inside not just whats on the cover. Moving away from safe-mode would be a cool thing to do. Hype does a lot to make sure that unknown rappers get exposure and Id like to see that continue. Taking more risks would be dope coz it'll tough for them to do so when one or two more mags pop up.

@TwoTeams. Headrush needs to step its game up. The show is very predictable and is not exciting at all. I don't know if any of you remember Rap City The Basement presented by Big Tigger. Headrush people could take a few pointers from that. The interviews were informative and the interviewer made it all about the artists and not about himself. No hate but at times Proverb steals the spotlight from his guests. There just doesn't seem to be any real structure to the show. Maybe Dzino and co need to find a really dope venue to film their shows. Maybe they can have proper beats in there for dudes to  spit on, etc. As it stands, even Shizniz is a better show than Headrush. They even have a dj on there. Headrush just seems rushed everytime I watch it. It's as if dudes are just trying to wrap up and go home.

Be honest with yourself D, Sharpa's pre-album hype was big but things became quiet after he released. Where are his music videos,  radio singles? No use complaining when your artist didn't make as much impact as the nominees. What could you possibly be complaining about? Everytime Kaptain's name comes up, you bring up the word 'Europe'. It's almost as if you're not interested in marketing him in SA. I reckon you're partly to blame for Sharpa not being as big in SA. Dude is talented and if you can just market him better (in this country) then maybe he might make a bigger impact in SA. You've clearly got the resources, do a better job at marketing Sharpa in SA.

Sports Arena / Re: Champions League QF fixtures

@TwoTeams. I agree, those four teams that you have mentioned will probably go through. The match of the draw is definitely Liverpool/Chelsea. Poor Liverpool have been getting tough draws. One has to think that will work to their advantage should they reach the finals. They would have played and beaten serious contenders.

Just playing D. You know the SAMA's are meant for certain labels.

@D. Quit hating. You should've paid that R300 entry fee for Sharpa, maybe he might've been nominated.

Congrats to Da Les for getting nominated for his album and video. He'll most probably leave the SAMA's with something.

I'm not attackin you here but I think you view of how "African" hip hop sppsed to be nowadays is only confined to your understanding which is "originality" that you keep talkin ala' your konfabs, sharpa etc,

Co-sign. Seems like it's mainly P-UNIT/Cape Town artists who are "original" in D's eyez. If your tryin to do BOOM-BAP your stuck in 90's. You doing CRUNK, your copying the latest trends. But if your doing that non-sensical spaced out shit your not immitating DEF JUX, your just being innovative.Oh, and ELECTRO is cool . Kasi rap is cool too, cos Prokid has done it, and done it well  ::)

LOL... Yeah, you have to have worked with D to get props out of him.

Its a shame that the likes of Bongz were critisized when Jozi came with muthaland crunk and is now seen as just copy cats when they do what is popular at the moment....

Anyway back to Maggz, im digging that kas'laam track is raw.. the chorus is just to nice

Me too.

Yeah,,, i agree with a lot of the comments above.

There is no doubt that Maggz has got talent and a killer smooth flow. However, the album is mostly way too generic. Bongz is a very musical dude and a great performer, but his production just sounds like too many big hits that are already out (and have been out for a while). If this was released in the States, people wouldn't be jumping on him for biting Akon / T-Pain. It's not just the auto-tune, it's the melody structures and the actual tone and sound of his voice. There's a track where Maggz sounds just like Lil Wayne with the auto-tune too. It undermines the fact that there are big tracks on the album, and big personalities behind them. Originality can't be underestimated. If you've got the talent, you need the direction too.

I really believe that Maggz and Bongz could be international artists if they took risks and came with a more original sound.

Co-sign everything you said. Am curious though D. There was a time when you were lambasting rappers who 'sound American', saying they weren't representing SA. You seem to have taken a liking to M.A Dub. So, you've finally made peace with the fact that we all don't have to sound like Ben Sharpa, Rattex or PRO? Just curious coz at times you're not really consistent and contradiction tends to creep in.
