Politics / World Refugee Day June 20th

Near & dear to my heart...

World Refugee Day: Displacement in the 21st Century. A new paradigm

The refugee challenge in the 21st century is changing rapidly. People are forced to flee their homes for increasingly complicated and interlinked reasons. Some 40 million people worldwide are already uprooted by violence and persecution, and it is likely that the future will see more people on the run as a growing number of push factors compound one another to create conditions for further forced displacement.

Today people do not just flee persecution and war but also injustice, exclusion, environmental pressures, competition for scarce resources and all the miserable human consequences of dysfunctional states.

The task facing the international community in this new environment is to find ways to unlock the potential of refugees who have so much to offer if they are given the opportunity to regain control over their lives.

The escalating crisis in Zimbabwe has sent an estimated two million people into neighboring South Africa. The conditions they are willing to endure there speak volumes about conditions in Zimbabwe.

Sports Arena / Sundowns vs Barca
« on: June 20, 2007, 11:21:53 PM »
Sky is the Limit!!!

Quote
Having arrived in Johannesburg on Tuesday, the Blaugrana had met Nelson Mandela at a charity dinner before participating in the encounter to raise money for children in the third world.

The hosts had taken a second minute lead through Surprise Moriri and were in impressive form in the opening period as the blunted Barça's powerful attack.

With Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho being hailed as the stars of the prestigious friendly encounter, they were cheered on by a full house but were unable to create anything of note.

Sundowns created five chances, including the opening goal, before Eto'o registered Barça's first shot at goal when he fired wide in the 25th minute.

Patrick Apataki, Josta Dladla and Brent Carelse all went close to doubling the South African's lead, before the visitors had a goal disallowed by Ludovic Giuly on the half-hour mark.

In the closing minutes of the opening period Deco attempted an ambitious overhead kick from 12 yards, but the keeper was well-placed to catch the effort.

Changes were made at half-time by Frank Rijkaard and Santi Ezquerro had a decent run out as he looked lively up front.

The former Athletic Bilbao forward chipped just over from close range as Barça enjoyed dominating the midfield after finally settling into a rhythm.

Manqoba Ngwneya and Dillon Sheppard both had chances at the other before the away team eventually equalised with 12 minutes remaining.

Andrés Iniesta's low drive was blocked and the ball fell to Ezquerro who was able to roll home from ten yards out.

It was a deserved leveller, but the home side will have felt hard done by when Barça snatched a winner four minutes later.

Ronaldinho sent a superb pa** down the right side of the penalty area and Marc Crosas ran on before guiding the ball confidently past the keeper and into the far side of the net.

Politics / June 16 1976... For Hector..
« on: June 16, 2007, 03:57:39 AM »
" '76 Ebony Mist, Don't get it twist the devil (still) exists.." (c) Tumi

Quote
"The first shot was fired before children started throwing stones. Then absolute chaos broke out. The children ran all over the place and stoned the police." A postmortem revealed that Hector had been killed by a shot fired directly into him, not a bullet ricocheting off the ground as the police later stated.

The dawn of 17 June revealed burnt-out cars and trucks blocking the roads, virtually every liquor store, beerhall, and community centre burnt to the ground. And dead bodies lying in the streets. The official death toll was 23; others put it as high as 200. Many hundreds of people were injured.

Students again poured into the streets. Parents stayed away from work to watch over their families. Police patrolled the streets. By the end of the third day of rioting, the Minister of Bantu Education had closed all schools in Soweto.

The rioting soon spread from Soweto to other towns on the Witwatersrand, Pretoria, to Durban and Cape Town, and developed into the largest outbreak of violence South Africa had experienced. Coloured and Indian students joined their black comrades. And unlike the riots of 1952 and the Sharpeville riots of 1961, the police were unable to quell the rioters, even with force. Students showed reckless disregard for their own safety to vent their frustrations. As soon as the upheavals were suppressed in one area than they flared up elsewhere. And so it continued for the rest of 1976.

A new generation had made their voice of opposition to apartheid heard, and were determined to be listed to. Many left South Africa to join the armies of the exiled political movements. Those who stayed behind ensured the exiled organisations could count on support from within the townships. June the 16th would never be forgotten."

General Discussion / The 5th Element of Hip Hop??
« on: June 10, 2007, 05:48:34 PM »
Since when has

BUSINESS ACCUMEN/BUSINESS SENSE

been a criterion for being a 'dope emcee'?

I thought MC stood for "Move the Crowd". (c) Rakim
Now MC means "Making C.r.e.a.m"??

Now its like you can be the most half-a**ed rapper on the planet but as long as you're a "hustler" & your business accumen is on point technical rhyming skillz are an optional extra.

I know I have been called old skool/ non-progressive/ caught up in the golden era, 'hip hop purist' here. Fine.
Ponder the above for a second & 'holla back'.

R.I.P. Tonderai Makoni aka Kingpin 1979 - 2003

4yrs ago today May 14th 2003 one of Zimbabwe's most talented sons left us.

From an early age I knew Tonde was not just some kid from Harare trying to rp. The natural pedigree was evident. The flow, the charisma, the higher conciousness. The sincerity.

Trips to Mandara to swap tapes I will never forget. Sorry about that Busta Rhymes CD. You put me onto ATLiens I put you onto Aquemini.
Why did you leave us? Too soon.
The music had only just began.
At least we have that.

In living memory.

General Discussion / good hair

This has made news in the last 3weeks in the US.

Quote
CBS/AP) CBS announced Thursday that it has fired Don Imus from his radio program, following a week of uproar over the radio host's derogatory comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team.

Imus found himself at the center of a storm after he called members of the Rutgers team "nappy-headed hos" last week. Protests ensued, and one by one, numerous sponsors pulled their ads from Imus' show. On Wednesday, MSNBC dropped its simulcast of the program.

Dude came back & blamed his remark on Hip hop music.
Thats not the point of this thread... Well not exclusively anyway.

It brings up an interesting debate.

The age old debate of what is considered a beautiful African/ black woman?

Over & over again we are bombarded with images (what up Deac?   ) of black women with straightened hair. Weaves. Dark & Lovely Relaxer. Wigs.
Who are the universally accepted "good looking black women"?
Beyonce/ Ciara (?)/ Nandipa from Isidingo (?)/ Gabrielle Union/ Tyra Banks/ Hale Berry/ those Channel O girls (?)/ Our Beauty Queens etc. (Deac pictures please).
Do all these sisters not have more caucasian features? At least the hair?

How does that affect the psyche of our sisters? Are they conditioned to think that is what they have to look like to be considered beautiful?

When you look at the basketball team of ladies in question NONE of them have "nappy" hair. All of them have weaves/ relaxed/ straightened hair.
It looks like they too have rejected their natural hair.

How does it affect our brothers? Are we not conditioned by the same white owned media the same way? Believing that is what a "hot girl" should look like? If we think like that then surely that will cause our sisters to further regress & conform to said unnatural beauty standards.

Have we been conditioned to reject our naturally "Nappy" hair to the point where we hate it so much we do unnatural things to change it to look like the other (wo)man's?

I want to hear especially from the sisters.
From the brothers too.

Lets talk.

Last.fm is a UK based internet radio and music community website, first founded in 2002. It is one of the world's largest social music platforms with over 325,000 registered users in the US [1] and over 200,000 in the UK and Europe.

Using a unique music recommendation system known as "Audioscrobbler", Last.fm builds a detailed profile of each user's musical taste by recording details of all the songs the user listens to, either on the streamed radio stations or on the user's own computer or iPod. This information is transferred to Last.fm's database ("Scrobbled") via a plugin installed into the users' music player. The profile data is displayed on a personal web page and updated weekly. The site offers numerous social networking features and can recommend and play artists similar to the user's favourites.

Users can create custom radio stations from any of the audio tracks in Last.fm's music library, but are not able to listen to individual tracks on demand, or to download tracks unless the rightsholder has previously authorised it. Registration is required to acquire a profile but is not necessary to view any part of the site or to listen to radio stations.

Seems like a decent utility to hear & get heard.

& so it is April 18th 2007. The country I call home turns 27 this day...

Quote
The UK annexed Southern Rhodesia from the [British] South Africa Company in 1923. A 1961 constitution was formulated that favored whites in power. In 1965 the government unilaterally declared its independence, but the UK did not recognize the act and demanded more complete voting rights for the black African majority in the country (then called Rhodesia). UN sanctions and a guerrilla uprising finally led to free elections in 1979 and independence (as Zimbabwe) in 1980.

"HAPPY" ZIMBABWE INDEPENDENCE DAY mwana vevhu.
