General Discussion / SA hip hop vs Hip hop made in SA
« on: January 26, 2007, 11:35:39 AM »
Friday morning. Not much work to do so I am back for another debate topic.
Inspired by the Selwyn thread (can it even be called that anymore?)

Allow me to pose a question:

"What is the difference between South African Hip Hop and Hip hop (that just happens to be) made in South Africa?"

Everyone's opinion appreciated please.

Hot Traxxx / InvisibleMan on MySpace
« on: January 23, 2007, 11:29:05 PM »
FIYAH!

Check it:

Quote
InvisibleMan is a hip-hop duo based in Pretoria, South Africa. A collaboration that began in mid-2006, the group brings together the talents of two members of separate hip-hop groups - Second Sun, of The Innovators and Undahdogg of Sixth Element.

.....InvisibleMans first album, The Invisible Man, is the result of the underground writings of this dynamic pair brought to light. Their offering takes this idea and applies it to personal and social issues ranging from the struggle of an unsigned artist to land paying gigs, to an ordinary un-connected South Africans view of the ever-elusive Black Economic Empowerment, and even the despair of a young man whose feelings are invisible to the object of his affections.

The story told in the album is also one of introspection. While InvisibleMan may be invisible to others, they take their audience on a journey which leads them to learn to see themselves more clearly than ever before. Tracks like One Shot and Reason for Being tell of the moment of realisation that no matter how blind society may be to you, you have a responsibility to make your presence felt. Although you can undermine your enemies from a position of invisibility, you cannot make significant changes to the world nor to yourself.

The Office / Disappearing threads on AG
« on: January 23, 2007, 04:05:17 PM »
This sh*t is getting frustrating.

Some of the most popular threads have died an un-natural death!

WHITE CHIX DIED right before my eyes!

Its not the mods that are deleting the isht.

I figure its a problem of concurrancy. With the more popular threads there will be multiple queries trying to update the database & thats when threads disappear. You cannot even see the history of the posts in your post history.
I dont have the rights to look @ the queries running behind the site only MILK has that.. but as we know:

MILK DOESNT CARE ABOUT AG  :cry:

General Discussion / Rap vs Hip Hop?
« on: January 23, 2007, 11:44:50 AM »
Time for another contreVERSEsial topic to spark some debate:

"Rap is something you do, Hip Hop is something you LIVE" (c) Kris Parker

It suggests that "rapping" is a verb whereas hip hop is the poper noun for the "culture".

Should we chose to accept this hypothesis? It poses some interesting permuatations. For example:

Can one be a rapper but not necessarily be hip hop? Where do we draw the line?
At what point does rapping become Hip Hop Music?.. Are there any rules?

Mapaputsi raps;
Kabelo raps;
H20 rap;
HHP raps;
Nelly Furtado raps;
Fergie raps;
K.Fed raps;
Britney Raps;
Will Smith raps;

who on that ls it makes hip hop music?

General Discussion / Happy MLK day
« on: January 15, 2007, 10:23:27 AM »
Quote
"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal...
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character...Let freedom ring. And when this happens, and when we allow freedom ring — when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children — black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics - will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

The day is closer...

HAPPY MLK DAY

Geek Section / Apple iPhone
« on: January 10, 2007, 09:39:22 AM »
So Apple finally launches the iPhone.

Who's keen?

I may not necessarily get one but I think its a good innovation that will force other mobile manufacturers to up their game.
Finally Nokia; SOny-Ericsson et al will be forced to finally converge their music & mobile telephony technologies (maybe even a camera in there too..)

My next phone if I could afford it would be nokia N95:

5 megapixel camera,
integrated GPS,
802.11g WiFi,
HSDPA,
microSD,
150MB of internal memory
