Word on the street is that Busta Rhymes G-Unit & some other big name hip hop acts will be gracing the shores of S.A sometime in early March. How true is this rumour I heard from a not so credible source so if anyone could please let me know the real deal...early april fools or otherwise...

Media / SABC One Live Battle
« on: March 15, 2004, 10:37:00 AM »
SABC ONE had a live MC battle on ONE this friday night featuring some of the most talented mc´s on the continent. There were 4 mcs participating: Hymphatic Thabs, Snazz, PRO-Verb and C.R.I.S.I.S (from Zambia). The Judges were The Naked DJ, Amu and some girl I cant remember her name.
The first round was Snazz vs Crisis and Snazz ate Crisis up. It was clear that Crisis had written his rhymes.
Next was Thabs vs Pro. Pro was always gonna win that one given that Thabs is not really the battle mc and more of an abstract thinker. Pro is of course the media sweetheart now + he came with the niceness so he won unananimously.
There was a 3rd place battle btwn Thabs & Crisis & once again Crisis came with some clearly written stuff. I don´t know if thats the way the battle in Zambia but it lost him the battle (again). Big Ups to Thabs for the quick thinkin!UM LISTEN...
Finally the last battle for the ´Trophy´(& a bunch of CDs) between Snazz & PRO. They had to pick characters from a bag & Rhyme as those characters. Snazz picked a 50year old afrikaaner lady selling somethine & ate PRO up in a think Afrikaans accent! Not to Say that Pro didnt hold his own but Snazz was clearly better with the impromptu.
8-)
Big Ups to SABC one for trying to represent the intensity of a battle but they f***ed up with the over-hyped ´kwaito´ rapper Pitch Black Afro being the main attraction!
Otherwise well done to all involved & hope to see more of this in the future.

Media / CHANNEL O Really Channel ZERO?..
« on: March 03, 2004, 02:45:00 PM »
I was stuck onto the idiot box the other night & got to thinking. Does Nasty really constitute a hiphop show? I mean I saw the likes of Jaggered Edge on there and this supposed to be a hip hop show? Who the hell Produces that show?
Is it also too much to ask for a new presenter? I would have gone for the natural choice Proverb but I seen him on that other SHout it Out show & I´m not sure he´d do any better. When are we getting a proper hip hop show?
If I wanna watch RnB then I´ll catch the late lick instead!
Feedback?

General Discussion / Grahamstown Hip Hop Supplementary
« on: January 20, 2004, 11:29:00 PM »
Just to point point out a few things that may have been left out of Kamma´s article on Grahamstown hip hop.
There are in fact 2 sets of emcee factions. The first being the local Grahamstown residents (Def Boyz ec) that actually live in Grahamstown and practice the art there.
The second group is the students who come from all over the globe and only attend schools in Grahamstown. This set comprises of High School Groups like the Beat Brothers from St Andrews college and (mostly) Rhodes University students like the Innovators.
I have to in the interest of transparency and completeness admit that there is a division between these groups. This is evidenced by the 2003 alteracation twn innovators & def boyz.
We at the Hiphocalypse have tried to bridge these gaps by trying to tncorporate bother factions and encourage joint ventures. In fact Mentalyricist is a Local G-town Boy while Rob-One is the complete opposite, a white Rhodes Student!
Hopefully gaps will be bridged and hip hop will grow.

Hot Traxxx / E.Cape Gauteng CPT Collaboration
« on: January 08, 2004, 10:51:00 PM »
If I were granted a wsh by my fairy godmc I would gather MC´s from different area codes on one track. Wouldnt it be nice to put Bux, 2nd Son, 5th Floor,Wordsmith and cats like Tumi and Mandrakx on one track to bridge the gaps in Local hip hop. I know them Gauteng cats have in the past been a little territorial with their craft but think about the da 4 horsemen (Kurupt and Ras Ka** from West Coast while Canibus and K.Priest from East). That kind of collabo would do wonders for SA hip hop & show unity!

Thanks AG for putting everyone onto this Doccie. I had the honour of participating in it & I must say it was a more than adequate representation of the true hip hop culture that is uplifting the youth in Grahamstown and the Eastern Cape in General. You forgot to mention that copies of the doccie are available on order from us here at the hiphocalypse so just drop us a line and we will gladly send you a copy!

General Discussion / 50 Cent Nas Beef??!!
« on: November 28, 2003, 01:35:00 PM »
Ja Rule stirred up their beef on his latest, Blood In My Eye 50 Cent & G Unit are pushing aside that beef and directing their venom at a new, but familiar target Nas!! While 50 was vexed when Nas cozied up with  Murder Inc. and replaced him on a track with Jennifer Lopez, 50 got under Nas´ skin when he aligned himself with Jay-Z for their tour. Things have been quiet as of late, but that´s changing as 50 takes a shot at Nas on G-Unit´s Beg For Mercy with "Gangsta Shit" Now Nas loves the kids, 50 on that killer shit") and takes subliminal shots at Nas on the new Whoo Kid mixtape. On the low, 50 and Nas maybe the next great lyrical war, as 50 claims to have a track ready in response to Jungle´s (Nas´ brother) jabs. All of this is very ironic, as the two were former friends and word is that 50 was present in the studio when Nas recorded "Ether! Nas is also catching some heat from Cam´ronand the Dipset....

Hip Hop Events / Silvertab D.I.Y Compilation
« on: November 26, 2003, 12:50:00 PM »
I hear the silvertab harambe dope session CD is coming out. The tracklisting is on www.Studentvillage.co.za and it looks like there are no surprises there. Also a nice touch is that there are a number of bonus trax like Cashless - Hotentot etc. Nice to see the local hip hop industry rising up above the politics and putting together such a major release. Apparently interviews will be next week on Harambe as well as an album release party at Carfax on the 4th. Hope to see Yall there!!
