Politics / Cape Minstrel/ Coons?
« on: October 26, 2007, 12:04:00 AM »
Would someone please explain this phenomenon to me?
I know very little about it. It appears to be held very dear by the "coloured"/ creole community. Witness? Maddstone? Anyone?..

My understanding of the "minstrels" in the American context has ma**ive negative connotations.

What is the SA context?

Hot Traxxx / Mobb Deep - Infamous Appreciation thread
« on: October 25, 2007, 09:24:09 AM »
Another Thursday... Another cla**ic Album Appreciation thread...

You know the deal...

Show your love... Share your experience with...:

Quote
THE INFAMOUS is a rugged ride through the truths and terrors of these two Big Apple outlaws, with cuts like "Right Back At You" and "Cradle To The Grave" stinging the minds of its listeners. This time around Mobb Deep play with the background tracks a little more, having self-produced virtually the entire album.

The lead-off single, "Shook Ones Pt. II," blew up tremendously, first in the underground and then on the charts; its killer lyrics and hypnotizing beat pounded a warning into the heads of the ma**es to stay real. "Survival Of The Fittest" and "Up North Trip" both describe the hectic streets of New York as a war zone where the constant struggle is to stay alive. Mobb Deep join forces with two of rap`s most intense lyricists, Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan`s Raekwon, on "Eye For A Eye (Your Beef Is Mine)." Adding to the all-star cast, Q-Tip donates an abstract feel to a few tracks and makes his cameo appearance on "Drink Away The Pain (Situations)," a clever track dedicated to an unlikely first love.

Mobb Deep come correct throughout the album, once again proving that while rap may be just a music, hip-hop is a way of life. Score another point for the crews of Queensbridge, as THE INFAMOUS enters that `hood`s Hall Of Fame right next to Nas` ILLMATIC.

Media / Zubz vid banned from SABC & Channel O???
« on: October 18, 2007, 02:52:08 AM »
From the Zubz facebook group:

Quote
Sons and Daughters of the soil, it seems that the more things change, the more they stay the same...

It has come to our attention that the SABC are not playing Zubz's new video, 'Get Out' because someone, apparently, allegedly, blykbaar went to the BCCSA and complained about it. Then it would appear that our other music channel, Channel O have also stopped playing the video for some unknown reason?

We wonder whether it's the panga and the AK47 which struck the nerve or the words Zubz delivered on the track which struck like a Panga or AK47, either way, we would like to hear from you.

Please write on the wall if you support the video and think that some entities and people are being overly sensitive and oppressors or send messages to the group. These comments may be used to illustrate just how distorted things really are.

Do not allow the minority to RULE!!!

Peace.

I like em Brown, yellow, puerto rican or haitian,
Name is phife Dawg from the Zulu nation,
Told you in the jam that we can get down,
now lets knock the boots like the group H-Town,

*now pay attention Lupe*

YOU GOT BBD ALL ON YOUR BEDROOM WALL,
BUT I'M ABOVE THE RIM & THIS IS HOW I BALL,

A pretty little something on a New York street,
This how I represent over this here beat,
alkin bout you..

This si my favourite Tribe album that helped define my teenage years. The perfect balance of concious & fun hip hop without compromising the musical integrity.
A lot of kids out these days could learn a lot from this album.

Hot Traxxx / PR & CL-Main Ingredient Appreciation thread
« on: October 04, 2007, 07:24:27 AM »
Another Thursday another appreciation thread.
IMHO one of THE best produced albums EVER. "Carmel City", "Searching" and of course "Take You there"... will forever remain in my library as undeniable HIP HOP CLa**ICS.
Pete Rock at his genius peak. Perfect synergy with C.L.

Ladies & Gentlemen show your love for the cla**ic...

Pete Rock & CL Smooth - The Main Ingredient:

Quote
Marley Marl disciple Pete Rock is rightly hailed as one of the greatest producers around. Jazzy and soulful, his productions are some of the smoothest, funkiest, most innovative, and listenable on record. Though he's produced a crate-full of hits, it's his work with front man C.L. Smooth that's most fondly remembered, and The Main Ingredient--the duo's second album, after Mecca and the Soul Brother--lives up to the hype. Smooth's proficiency on the mic doesn't match his partner's studio wizardry, but not many do, and Smooth's easygoing, free-flowing delivery complements the grooves to good effect (and more importantly, keeps Rock from taking on too many vocal duties). Great for parties or a lazy weekend afternoon, The Main Ingredient is fondly remembered for all the right reasons.

It CANNOT be an album you have not heard yet! :x
It cannot be a crew's entire body of work i.e. dont come in here on some "Wu-tang - All Albums" sh*t. Lets be real thats more than 25 albums already!
Please DO NOT list your Top 25 here. I am asking for ONE album only, the LATEST one!

Everyone has them. A list of 25 albums that define your hip hop experience. The standard by which you measure all hip hop...the definitive timeless cla**ic releases.

As hard as it may be to actually list them (worse yet in order) we all can name at least 2 dozen monumental LP's.

Mine are mostly 90's boom bap or similar including albums like Illmatic, Paid in Full, ATLiens, The Main Ingredient, Midnight Marauders etc.
I noticed they are mainly from a certain era. Its almost as if music isn't as good these days..which got me thinking...

WHAT WAS THE LAST ALBUM THAT IMPACTED YOUR TOP 25?

Hip Hop Events / Sept 11 Blueprint Appreciation thread

Yup Sept 11 was important for obvious reasons but also in the hip hop context:

Quote
The Blueprint is the sixth album from rapper Jay-Z. Originally intended to be released on September 18, 2001, the album's release was brought forward one week to September 11, 2001, in order to combat widespread bootlegging. Unfortunately, the album was released on the day of the terrorist attacks in Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania and Jay-Z's native New York City. Despite being overshadowed by the attacks, the album sold over 426,000 copies in its opening week becoming his fourth consecutive album to hit #1 on the Billboard 200. It eventually went 2x Platinum, and sales stand at more than 2.3 million copies in the US. Jay-Z would later boast, "Rumor has it, The Blueprint cla**ic/Couldn't even be stopped by Bin Laden"
