General Discussion / Languages?
« on: June 05, 2008, 12:38:19 PM »
Just thinking. I'm wondering how many languages are collectively spoken by AG heads. I'm sure there are cats here who speak four, five, six languages fluently and converse in them daily, but I'm equally sure that there are some cats who speak some really unusual or uncommon tongues.

So what languages do you speak and how well (and yes, English counts)

I'll go first:
- English (Fluent)
- Zulu (Reasonable)
- French (Pretty good)
- Spanish (basic)

Interview with Bruce Williams, the dude who handled all Dre's BI for like the past twenty years. Really long (three-parter) but a superb piece of journalism if you've got time.

- Wordsworth on EMC - 'Winds of Change'

I've been thinking a fair bit lately about this. We live in a society and a culture (hip-hop) which prizes youth and young talent and energy. We are already seeing a bunch of 'older cats' in hip-hop - the pioneers of the 80s and early 90s are all starting to get to their 40s and 50s. Soon, we are going to have a lot of old rappers and producers on our hands. Is it going to be cool to be old and still spitting? Or are a lot of the old MCs going to feel burned out and forgotten as continual new waves of cats take their place?

How is this going to affect us? I know there are some older cats here who have seen a lot of shit change. What do you think?

20/20 HIP-HOP RADIO - SPECIAL REPORT

In this 20/20 Special Report, we look at a situation which is shaking the foundations of South African hip-hop. The political party Freedom Front Plus recently made a complaint about a song/video by African rapper Zubz. They said his track 'Get Out!' was an incitement to violence, and complained as such to South Africa's Broadcasting Complaints Commission - a body which has the power to ban the track.

In this report, 20/20 speaks to Zubz, FF+ spokesman Willie Spies as well as two of Zubz's producers. Hear for yourself whether or not the track should be considered hate speech - and hear what the Commission decided.

At what point does a song stop being entertainment and commentary and start to become incitement to violence? How much freedom is too much freedom? 20/20 takes on these questions and more.

It's all here, in a 20/20 exclusive. Get in.

General Discussion / Racist radio
« on: May 08, 2008, 12:27:05 PM »
From Sohh.com (be warned, it's a bit biased - and it's a press release from the crew of the rapper in question):

Quote
NY's Hot 97 radio host Miss Jones, famous for her ribald morning show, once again makes news for offensive racist slurs. Earlier this week, Miss Jones interviewed the German rapper Lionezz, ostensibly to poke fun at her for being cut from VH1’s Miss Rap Supreme. Unfortunately, the tone quickly descended from jokey to racist, as Miss Jones compared Lionezz to the Nazis!

At first, Lionezz rhymed and Miss Jones and her studio mates began cracking jokes. Lionezz has been in the business for almost ten years and is no stranger to criticism. However, these comments were not about skills, they were straight up personal, so Lionezz responded with insults in German. This was apparently too much for the high and mighty Hot 97 staff, so they cut off Lionezz’s mic and began slinging racist slurs like “Heil Hitler!” “Shine my boots!” and “Mein Reich siegt!” (Victory to my Reich!).

Lionezz may be German, but she is of Armenian immigrant origin and grew up suffering abuse from the real ethnocentric Neo-Nazis. How ludicrous that Lionezz would cross the ocean to be compared to her enemies by an ignorant American!

Beyond Lionezz, Miss Jones showed her complete disregard for the millions of victims of the Nazi regime, who suffered true political persecution and do not deserve to be cheapened by a music shock jock. Miss Jones has exercised similarly bad judgment in the past, when she was suspended in 2005 for racist comments against Asians after the Tsunami crisis. Miss Jones is supposed to be part of a multicultural art form, but once again, she has abused her platform by spewing racist vitriol, and deserves to be held accountable.

General Discussion / Albums of the year (so far)
« on: May 02, 2008, 01:40:12 PM »
Obviously, it's too early to call, but so far my nominations:

- EMC 'The Show'
There isn't a single track on here that is skippable. It's cohesive, genuine, neck-snapping and seriously well-produced.

Kashmere 'Raiders of the Lost Archives'
UK hip-hop that owes lots to horror-core and the Wu. Kashmere has a knack for making eerie, imaginative songs which stick in the memory. This album is dope even if it was recorded in 2003, and only released this year.

And no, I have nothing better to do. I'm in limbo until Iron Man later tonight.

Ghostface Killah Cut Out Of ''Iron Man'' Flick, Rep Responds
written by Janeé Bolden
Tuesday - April 29, 2008

Marvel's new Iron Man film hits theaters this week and despite early reports that Wu-Tang rapper, Ghostface Killah, would make a cameo appearance in the flick, SOHH has learned that he's nowhere to be found in the final version.

"Marvel and Paramount eliminated the story line that led to Ghostface's scene in Dubai," a spokesperson for Ghostface told SOHH. "Robert Downey Jr. [who plays Iron Man] was having a party in Dubai where he runs into Ghostface and they have some dialogue, an exchange about lending each other yachts and Bentleys."

To make up for the disappointment of landing on the cutting room floor, Iron Man director Jon Favreau put in a call to Ghost himself to apologize, smoothing things over by making sure to keep a touch of Ghostface in the film by adding some musical elements.

"After the change John Favreau called apologizing and made a quick fix by licensing the 'Celebrate' video," Ghost's rep said. "Then Def Jam allowed us to replace the music with an original song for the movie, which all happened within 3 days and 5 days before [the] final edit."

Ghost's affinity for Iron Man has been hugely evident throughout his career, thanks to the Staten Island MC's adoption of Tony Stark - the super hero's real identity - as an alter ego as well as his decision to title his solo debut Ironman.

Ghostface's wasn't the only cameo that didn't pan out, despite rumors that Samuel L. Jackson and Hilary Swank would appear in the film, the final cut proved otherwise.

Iron Man hits theaters May 2nd.

And no Nick Fury either? You bastards. Almost made me not see the movie. Almost. Can't wait!!!

General Discussion / Think about this...
« on: April 29, 2008, 11:12:10 AM »
The Roots have long had label trouble, both at MCA and Def Jam. They have never sold platinumn - Things Fall Apart has reached 906,000 units sold. On the eve of Rising Down, and interesting comment from ?uestlove:

"If someone asked me, 'Do you want to release two albums and sell over 2 million copies, or do you want a 20-year career but none of your records will sell over 500,000 units?,' that's a tough question. But, looking back, I wouldn't change a thing."

What would you do?

General Discussion / Meth and Red
« on: April 16, 2008, 11:50:01 AM »
So went to watch Method Man and Redman last night in Shepherd's Bush. Absolutely batshit crazy the pair of them - ran through everything, from Blackout to cla**ic Wu, to solo Reggie and Mef stuff, to 4,3,2,1...incredible. They were going nuts too, jumping off speakers, stagediving. I'm sure they were both high off their tits, and they gave a killer show.

At the bus stop after, girlfriend said they showed her why hip-hop gets such a bad reputation.

I'm like, what?

"No, because they were talking about bitches and smoking weed and getting drunk, talking about n*ggas and hoes and all that."

IT'S PARTY MUSIC! It's f***ing entertainment! It's a crazy show run by two dudes who you couldn't take seriously if you tried!

This really irritated me. What do you motherf***ers think?

General Discussion / Anyone got this?
« on: April 10, 2008, 01:48:52 PM »
Can anyone help me find this track?

I need the instrumental from the Intro/Outro of Lupe Fiasco's Food and Liquor - ie, one without Lupe talking shit over it.

Searched and searched but no luck. Can anyone help?

General Discussion / Weird lyrics
« on: April 07, 2008, 04:47:53 PM »
Post up songs/lyrics that are just plain f***ing out there batshit crazy...in the weird sense.

DANGERDOOM - SOFA KING
Scared of a bunch of water, then get out the rain
Order a rapper for lunch and spit out the chain
Then kick a lungee of the tip of his timbo
And trick a honey-dip into a game of of strip limbo
Odd... He couldn't find no remorse
A wink is as good as a nod to a blind horse
Of course his technique was from a divine source
Never knew the price of ice or what swine cost
One guy tried to bite the heat
That's when he discovered the other other white meat
Ohhhh, the one they hate so well
He sure keeps it pyscho like the old Bates motel
They came to ask him for a least some new tracks
But only got confronted by the beast with two backs
Knock... Mouse is a made man
Villain laid it down like the best laid plan
Vell the cat who the hell is that near the middle
Got y'all but it's not all bare and skittles
Prepare the vittles, got riddles and spittles
Crystal clear to the jock or the tittle
TSSSS.. It's hot off the griddle
Came to take the cake whether it's a lot or a little
KABOOM... DOOM is nervous large
You could tell by his bloomin' room service charge
Dark and tall to boot
The only thing was wrong was he was bald as a coot
Used to rent a van from Peter Pan to red and tan
And keep the human foot for his dead man's hand
This was when the mask was brand spanking new
Before it got rusted from drinking all the brew
[Sniff] Stankin' too, pew
Kept all his earnings in the bank in a shoe
Spat what he knew, energy for true
To all fake rappers, twenty-three skidoo
Excuse you, any room in the cla** front?
For a blast of the blunt, shrooming since last month
Doom a human in the mask I'm on the stunt
Danger zooming past mad fast on the hunt
Keep the streets, we got the city needing conquered
Discreetly with the CD till they be completely bonkered
The fans demanded it, handled it, swallow it
His own brandishing, if only he could bottle it
Hmm.. Nah she could get messy
Feds tried to torture him for the secret recipe
He said: It's no use, I only know half
No speaka da english. I only do the math
Zzzzz. Felt no pain
His brain was saturated with cocaine and Rogaine
He said: Try scan no thing three-card dead fly man
go for bling he got bled
I jam over sting, see spots red
I am "Sofa King, We Todd Ed"
