Producers - Discussion / Ba** question
« on: March 10, 2010, 05:08:36 PM »
So here's a weird problem.

I'm trying to create a dance track entirely out of non-musical objects. So far it's worked well - heavy books for the kick drums, pots for the snares...you get the idea, and after processing it sounds great. But I'm having trouble with the ba**.

I'm trying to create a big, ballsy dance ba** sound, and am not having much luck. Initially I thought a blender would give me the right tone, but it's too mid-range content and is nowhere near full enough. Short of micing up a washing machine, I'm a bit stumped.

My one other thought, given that electronic ba** sounds are normally a result of oscillators, is to find some natural tones to combine - but again, I'm clueless as to what generates these.

Anybody got any thoughts? What natural objects make a ba** sound? Daliq, where you at?

Media / Gift Of Gab interview

"For Vegas, when DNAE played me that beat…that’s a story! I took a trip to Las Vegas to do a show, and when it was over I thought, I’ma take a vacation here and stay here for a week. There are so many vices, it’s like wow! This is not really a vacation. I’m getting sucked in by all of this temptation. I understand why they call it Sin City! So when DNAE played that beat, that story came into my head and I just began writing. It’s a trip! You never know how people are going to define your music.”

General Discussion / TOO MUCH MUSIC!
« on: February 24, 2010, 11:27:52 AM »
Ever feel like you have too much music?

Between the internet offering multiple free downloads, the numerous links I get sent everyday for no-doubt amazing records, the long-a** list of physical CDs I have to buy, the numerous singles cluttering my desk and inbox, I feel like there is too much brilliant music out there and I'll never have a chance to hear it simply because there's not enough time to get through it all.

Right now I'm backed up something chronic. The new Ty, Infesticons, a bunch of random singles, Wigga's house album...it's driving me mad! I see those Scienz Of Life mixtapes, and the Abdus/Nyambo collab, but I don't want to right-click because I know they'll just sit on my hard drive for months, unlistened to.

How do you cope with having an abundance of music and not enough time? Or am I the only one?

Hot Traxxx / Canibus

So.

LINK REMOVED/?1t24iqbtmzj

f***ing awful cover. f***ing awful title.

Absolute, genuinely, mindblowingly, astoundingly good album.

There are more quotables here than I can fathom. Canibus has been f***ing around for too long, and he's finally come back. This is heat from start to finish. Stoupe might not be on it, but f*** me if his replacements don't know what they're doing.

Just listen. This album will amaze you.

According to DPlanet, anyway. Big ups to 'em.

I'm writing for a kick-a** new music website, Beatnik Online.

It's really new (started two weeks ago) but is bursting with good shit. I'm trying to get as many African rap albums on there as I can.

I'm bumping this:

Can't believe I used to hate on SAS. They came super correct. Madlib produced the entire record, and it's just...smooth. Smooth as butter.

Oh dear.

http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.10460/title.queens-veteran-rapper-killa-sha-dies

Quote
Rap artists including Planet Asia (via Twitter) and website Unkut.com have confirmed that veteran Queens emcee Killa Sha pa**ed away this weekend due to complications from Diabetes. A onetime partner of Tragedy Khadafi, Sha was a member of Juice Crew affiliates The Super Kids.

Later becoming Killa Kids, Killa Sha released several vinyl singles. Throughout the '90s, he remained close with Mobb Deep and Tragedy Khadafi. Sha, who also recorded as Sha Lumi, worked as a deejay for Prodigy and Havoc, while also recording as a rapper with Jedi Mind Tricks, Tragedy and Screwball.

He last released God Walk On Water on Traffic Entertainment in 2007. There was a rumored full album with Large Professor in the works, with whom he worked on last year's Main Source.

Media / EPISODE 100
« on: January 10, 2010, 12:02:48 AM »
So here's the thing.

My podcast, 20/20 Hip-Hop Radio, has been going for two years and five months. It's clocked thousands of downloads, broken dozens of exclusive tracks, held three ma**ive annual award shows (the most recent being won by K'Naan) and is currently coming up to its 100th Episode.

This landmark episode is due to air Sunday 24 January 2010.

BUT.

The week leading up to it, something special is going to happen. I don't want to talk it up too much because so far my co-conspirators haven't sent me their material (fingers crossed) but I have this to say:

If hip-hop is your thing, if you're fiendin' for some great music, if you get a kick out of quality mixes put together by shit-talking professionals, then clear some of that download cap.

You can find the podcast here: http://2020.mypodcast.com
