Wow!! Wordplay was off-the heezay once again. Chapter 2 of the Wordplay Open mic session went off well. Some new cat by the name of Wing Wong came through doing something the crowd was feeling. (he was there last time with another cat namred  Chang who was rapping on some beat he got from Milk which souded tight by the way. Anyway) As usual, everyone that steps up to the mic is usually nice.
Then ROB 1 also did his thing. At the end of his set, he said anybody that wanted to battle him should step up. Well..Wing WOng stepped up and damn where we not entertained? Both MCs had some damn bloody witty stuff coming out. Consider the crowd that rocks up is a mixture of your backpacker hiphop headz, as well as regular peeps coming out to just chill, and the plentiful (talented) shorties, it´s nice to see when the mcs can get such a mixed crowd responding, laughing, whowing, going bananas at every punchline!! Straight up dope man. The level of mcing over here is actually getting stupidly ridiculous.
Wordplay is an open mic seesion brought every fortnight Thursday by The Innovators/Brainchild Promotions/ and The Suite. Comedy, poetry, mcing, singing, open to all. For more details and reviews of the nights check out  http://www.theeye.rucus.net/_sgt/m1_1.htm" target="_blank" target="_new">http://www.theeye.rucus.net/_sgt/m1_1.htm

Hot Traxxx / The Innovators mixtape..heard it?

Bubonic Chronic was new entry at #30 on the ABSA RMR top30 this week by the way. New vocalist Essence on that one with The Innovators. Essence ripped it with no special effects/editing.  That´s his real voice up that man. A hip hop head that can bust a singing thing for us at such high notes! Crazy. Bubonic Chronic for real.
Another new entry finally (local hiphop wise) was Cashless.  Snazz represented in front of the nation this weekend I guess. He´s got quite the respect on the streets here I must say. 8,3,1 is the track I´m feeling on the Casless CD right now. Bigups Eclipse Communications & Unreleased Records doing their thing. Making a living off hiphop iin Africa must be respected coz it´s quite a hustle.

Another Innovators Mixtape dropping in April. Zen´s album is going to be too tight. You´ve had a reviewer all the way from streets overseas saying Wordsmith (now known as Zen ofcourse) is truly superb South African Talent right there  [check out review of the RU Project http://www.epinions.com/content_3579551876" target="_blank" target="_new">http://www.epinions.com/content_3579551876 ]

It´s amazing that people can SLEEP on tight stuff just because it ain´t on your favourite t.v. music show! Peep Zen on RU Project track "Sparks" (if you got your hands on that straight to the street cd). Then again on MegaMCS. Then peep him on "Zenith" on the Sick With The Flow mixtape. All his flows have been indeed absolutely sick.

Cold World from Second Son is indeed the cla**ic Second Son gem that we expect. He held it down. That opening soundscape, the beat, the sonic painting executed, then lyrics that are FOOD for the SOUL(SOULFOOD get it?).

I´m sure the pull a character out of the hat thing definately worked for the better. Another element you can always throw in freestyle sessions to really gauge if peeps ARE really freestyling. You were asking before how the WORDPLAY OPEN MIC Session went down in Grahamstown. Check review on http://www.theeye.rucus.net/_sgt/m1m1s1_1.htm" target="_blank" target="_new">http://www.theeye.rucus.net/_sgt/m1m1s1_1.htm

General Discussion / DIY CD/Word Up/HipHop
« on: January 21, 2004, 02:58:00 PM »
It´s about time. As I say, whats carckalating-going-down-dealy-foshizo-927103498.

Anybody had a chance to sample the new Silvertab DIY cd (out through African Dope and Sony)? In case you need to be updated, it´s a compilation featuring unsigned headz all across S.A. For 12 weeks headz had to send their stuff, & if it was tight enough, u got onto the album. I´m interested in hearing whatchu think of it; i.e. your choice of what the banging tracks are. Still confused? That was the whole Joburg Carfax launch thing early Dec where u had all sorts of headz from all over the country doing their thing on stage. Missed it? Catch it on Channel O in Feb. In my opinion sick performances to look out for (Skwatta/Hoodlum/Magz/-and I can´t even front by pulling some humble shiznit, but unless anyone else disagrees, The Innovators was completely disgustingly sick with it too man. Damn the place came alive man with the whole Stick a needle in your butt. And that was justa a scratch of what´s about to pop).

The Word UP HipHop documentary shot in G-town doing big things I see. Mad shout out to the fine Alisha and crew who that put it together. More coming outta this eastern cape part of the continent this yr, headz need to look out.  Sensei come on now, you need to update us on the Zim hiphop scene right now, coz I know there is a crazy one. You right there man holla at us.

In closing as my first posting; a lotta hungry cats out there, and it´s becoming clearer by the minute. I´ma tell you like BadBoyT told me, this is the yr you need to blow up, make it happen. I see AfricanFellaz/Ozone/Rob1 & Siya tryna pull it together, wzup with everyone else? Make the transition from a bedroom mc with a drawer full of scribbled constructions and put something on wax for us to enjoy/hate/love/debate whether it´s wack or hot....all for the growth of this art in our Africa. Nuff of that: Joints to check out DIY/Bon A Appetit/RU Project/The Black Album.
