I reckon most of the dough come from performances, tours and  endorsements.
Ticket sales and arrangements with promoters determine how much one gets as well. I think even though primarily artists wanna make a living from just music they are faced with the harsh reality of the industry and most have to be extra resourceful.
Sometimes artists are also paid for just Making appearances at functions.
