Hot Traxxx / Kanye Evolves on "Late Registration"
« on: August 07, 2005, 11:12:28 PM »
Kanye Evolves on "Late Registration"

Rapper finds common ground with orchestral rock producer Jon Brion

Kanye West's 2004 debut, The College Dropout, was nominated for ten Grammys and sold 2.6 million copies -- but with his second album, August 30th's Late Registration, he's aiming much, much higher. "They say you can't be all things to all people," West told his new production partner, rock studio whiz and film composer Jon Brion. "But I want to be all things to all people."
The most obvious sign of West's quest for universal appeal was his genre-defying decision to hire Brion -- best known for his lush, quirky orchestral arrangements for Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann and P.T. Anderson movies, including Punch-Drunk Love -- as co-executive producer. "Some people who hear about this a**ume it's just total madness," says Brion, who had never worked on a hip-hop track until West sought him out on the recommendation of mutual pal Rick Rubin. "But why not make the attempt to bridge as many gaps as possible?"

Brion helped with song structure and played guitar, keyboards and other instruments -- but his most noticeable contributions are the album's prominent strings and the extended codas on some tracks. Among West's other collaborators were guest vocalists Cam'ron, Brandy, the Game, Jamie Foxx, Jay-Z and Maroon 5's Adam Levine. "This is definitely not just a hip-hop album," says Brion. "But it is also by no means overtly arty, or non-hip-hop. I don't think it's a weird record by any means."

"Heard 'Em Say," with Levine doing his best Stevie Wonder on the chorus, is likely to be the album's next single. "It was really a cool, organic process," says Levine. "Kanye's lyrics were beautiful."

The disc begins with the triumphant "Touch the Sky": "I think I died in that accident/This must be heaven," West raps over blaring horns and strings, referring once again to the car crash immortalized in Dropout's "Through the Wire." One of the album's most dramatic songs, the diss track "Bring Me Down," opens with an orchestral flourish and a Queen-like choir of multilayered Brandy vocals. The jazzy "Drive Slow" nods to Houston with a chopped-and-screwed coda, while "Crack Music," the album's rawest song, pays lyrical homage to the Black Panthers over a martial beat and Dr. Dre-style synth line.

"I think there was a great deal in common between us," says Brion. "Kanye is absolutely obsessed with wanting to make something really good."

cant wait for this album.........soon.........just a few more weeks.

General Discussion / Pete Rock's Lost and Found
« on: August 02, 2005, 04:21:42 PM »
Found this interesting article that leads to Pete's Lost and Found.I Havent heard or seen this album. Those that have, what do u think of the lost material, of course taking urself back to the "golden age".But then again, thats a subjective moment in different ppl's lives.Anyways, moving on, read the piece:

The Best Album You Never Heard, by Anthony Pukalo

The golden age of hip-hop is commonly considered to have taken place during 1992-1996; those of us lucky enough to have grown up during that period have become the envy of hip-hop’s newer generations. Pete Rock & CL Smooth became a dynamic duo for most of us throughout our formative years. They gave us a number of great albums but things began to hit the skids in 1995 or so. Elektra Records basically owned their firstborn, and wanted something to show for this. Not being able to promise anything from his partner, Pete Rock introduced Elektra to his little brother’s group, InI.
Grap Luva, Rob O, Ras G and Marco Polo made up the loosely combined woodpile known as InI. A group of Native Tongue sounding emcees, with help from Large Professor and Q-Tip vocally, backed with an entire orchestra of Pete Rock production, most people would have to pause at that point to catch their breath. Well, if you never heard this album, you’re not alone—it never was commercially released. Label politics combined with group members simply not being on the same page led to a cluster of errors, leaving this album shelved and the group in disarray.
The album has been released in dozens of confusing denominations, bad internet bootlegs, as well as disgruntled group members white-labeling half the album and releasing it to NYC vinyl shops. In other words, it’s never been given a proper birthright. A distributor from England provided online retailers with a strange pitch-altered bastardization of the InI album last year. People gobbled it up, but true fans were left scratching their heads at the peculiar sound. Just in time for the 4th quarter sales feeding frenzy, Pete Rock has given us a look into the vaults.
Currently available at major online retailers, and if you’re lucky, you’ll turn one up at your local music establishment, is Pete Rock’s Lost & Found, a two CD set which highlights the InI album as well as the never before heard Deda Baby Pa album. College radio addicts from the late ‘90s may remember “Every Man 4 Himself” by Baby Pa and Pete Rock which slid across our decks on white label. The quality was bad, but no one cared. Some of us ransack E-Bay every week trying to come up with a second copy for our collections.
Songs like “Blah Uno” and “Press Rewind” will literally take your breath away. This double disc is an absolute must have. While Deda is a little less advanced than the emcees from InI, he provides a very simple style that is easy on the ear. The simplicity of the music is what makes it so beautiful, Pete Rock’s subtle loops provide a backdrop for Baby Pa to spit for over a dozen tracks of cla**ic hip-hop. If you’ve never been introduced to this sound, now’s the time. Don’t lose your chance before this double disc disappears. You can only go to the well so many times before it’s tapped out.
