...Our Town encapsulates the nature of life from its beginning to its middle and to its end.Over the course of three acts, we become acquainted with the everyday lives of an unexceptional group of people who live in a nondescript town. With relative ease, we begin to identify with the modest but busy and full lives of the townspeople. Their daily activities, issues and problems aren't dramatically different to our own: they prepare meals, deal with family matters, take time to dream, fall in love and suffer personal tragedy.
In emphasising the characters and their seemingly mundane lives, the play challenges the audience to question the purpose of life and whether it has any eternal value. Our hearts echo Emily's poignant question, "Do any human beings ever realise life while they live it? Every, every moment?"
This answer is revealed in understanding that Wilder's focus on the ordinary, in fact, has an extraordinary purpose:to show that the power of life is found not only in moments of great pa**ion and joy, but that it also exists within every facet of our daily existence.
as the play progresses, we become increasingly aware that "something is eternal. And it ain't houses and it ain't names, and it ain't earth, and it ain't even the stars – everybody knows in their bones that something is eternal, and that something has to do with human beings."
we realise that most people fail to recognise the eternal within themselves and in those around them; they do not make much effort to cherish life while they still have it. Ultimately, this realisation urges us to examine the way in which we live life and – unknowingly – impact the lives of others...
