& let's not forget that there were more hip hop hedz out that nite in that one space than i have seen in a minute...these are people who would know what a hip hop crew is and if the crowd were judging u know ya'll wouldn't even be on the guess list.
so go on and flaunt yo little bullshit glory for the misled Danish crowds, but remember on the streets YOU'LL NEVER GET RESPECT...
TSEK!
One reason why Cape Town hip-hop is not reaching the next level - nor ever will, if it continues on this trend.
If shit does not go your way there are 2 things you can do:
1. Bitch and moan, blaming the weather, the man, bad sound, white people, and everyone else BUT yourself. This is a dead-end. You can bitch as much as you want about circumstances... but next time around they still gonna be there. You got no power to change or improve or make a difference if blame is always directed at the outside and at others.
2. Look at reasons WHY you didnt win, and what YOU can do better next time.
Cape Town headz are lazy. Heads figure they deserve dues respect and deserve to win simply because they have been around for a long time and have street cred.
I was not at the event, but here is my understanding of the outcome.
The CPT scene is MC driven and MC centred. Ppl stepped up at the comp expecting to win on the merit of their syllables. Its what gets you respect here. Headz dont seem to care too much about being organized, stage presence, beats etc - basically EVERYTHING that is needed to put on a good show. In other words... most performances are pretty one-dimensional. You can be the illest lyricist...but if all u got is raw lyrics without the surrounding shit to put on a good show... you are lacking heavily.
The judges came from Denmark, so basically they were measuring and judging the event according to their criteria. The scene up in denmark and europe tends to be quite different. You dont have the whole afro-centric storytelling aspect. What ppl expect up there primarily is a good show, and by good show i mean, having a DJ, being tightly organized, stage presence. etc.
Honestly... alot of heads...especially up in europe where its more about the beats (not to mention that many ppl wont understand english and mzanzi references/slang etc), dont give a f*** about lyrics.
We all acknowledge that ETC are not the tightest MCs, and by that measuring stick alot of Cape Town heads think that they did not deserve to win, because they a**ume that their criteria for what is tight/ill are universal (their understanding of criteria being lyrical prowess, flow, meaning, message, syllable practice etc).
BUT ETC has stage presence, a DJ and the performance flows. Whereas alot of crews will step with a raggedy a** scratched up CD, all grimey and disorganized and shit, clutching a quartz talking shit about (insert whatever here) between each track and shouting instruction into the mic to whoever happens to be standing in front of the CDjs after each song.
ETC's show is organized... premixed. The tracks flow seamlessly into each other, building momentum and energy etc. THAT is what MOST people expect from a show. Its supposed to be f***ing entertainment and a party...not a lecture.
NOW... image all other crews did this. Its f***ing EASY to do chaps. get off your lazy a**. Put some structure into your set. ORGANIZE. Be creative... learn from the big US acts.. THATS how you put on a good show. If any of the other crews had put the amount of work that ETC put into their show to complement their MC skills....they would have won.
Fact is they didnt...and THATS why those crews didnt win.
So please STOP f***ing whining and whincing like a bunch of pussies, and ask yourself how you can IMPROVE and LEARN from this 'f*** UP'. Step up your game and you will start to bring in more casual hip-hop fans and eventually make some money.
ETC is coming in from a different angle. They might not be as strong as other crews in terms of skills, but they are teaching us all a good lesson. They are multi-dimensional and offer the crowd more than words.
So what u gonna do now. 1, keep hating bitch and moan and repeat the same mistakes next time around, or 2. f***ing DO something and STOP whining.
2.
