Graf Heads / Is Graff Dead...?

You know what man... you need to get out of your mind state...
I got into hip-hop as a writer 8 years ago. N shit doesn´t stay the same.

The only way hip-hop as a culture can stay alive is to keep on reinventing itself and to innovate. Alot of people don´t realise that shit - especially the ´REAL´ ´HARDCORE´ "UNDERGROUND´ cats who just wanna keep shit stagnant. and the same - they diss anything that deviates from what they consider ´the true´ form.

If the ´creators´ of hip-hop had had the same attitude... Hip-hop would never have come to be...  Who would EVER have thought that spraying little letters on a wall, that wiggling a record, that ´experimenting´ with dance moves, that ´talking´ over music could have evolved to the extent it has...to create whole new art-froms.

This INNOVATION is the true essenz of hip-hop. what started with blockparties and using two copies of the same record to ´loop´ the instrumental break in the middle of a record became a worldwide phenomenon.

My point is: people who DISS new things (translate: ´those cats who just hate on experimentation and shit because it is not what they are used to´) are doing the exact OPPOSITE of what the true spirit of hip-hop should have taught you.

As such, in order for hip-hop (or whatever it is to be called in the future) to stay alive it has to KEEP REINVENTING ITSELF and formulate NEW things and new ways of expression.... otherwise it will wither and die.

Hence... when I see people diss new thing like STENCILS for example it pissed me off.... who are you to judge wether or not something new is tight and is true... by dissing it you are doing the same thing that some 60 year old conservative f*** is doing when he says that ´rapping is not singing´.

Move with the times... I just saw a book on stencils (a la spraycan art (which i own btw :)) that blew my f***´n mind.... people are doing CRAAAAAAZY shit with stenclis..... intricate ´stencil´ pieces that span 20 metres - allowing for ALOT more detailed expression. etc.

Etc... My advice: EMBRACE new things and innovate .... Beatboxing, Stencils,  whatever whatever.... We gotta keep shit moving - otherwise hip-hop will wither die - be left behind and be forgotten like any other sub-culture that has existed. - though hip-hop should be more than that.

As to Graffiti not having changed:
Dplanet - you have no idea how far graffiti has come.... you should pilgrim to europe sometime... countries like Germany, Switzerland and France...
There are SO many different styles new innovations etc. Just look at the style of lettering that was done back then and is being done now.
I advice you to do a search for these twins called ´Os Gemeos´ - writers who do these elabourate, intricate pieces - blows my f***´n mind - N they lip it into a whole new direction.

hmm... old on... waaaaait a minute... lemme think about that.

I´m racking my imagination... How could i prove to this chap that I´m a talent MC....

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..

This must be a test.

The obvious logical solution would of course to be: to let you hear my shit... but that´s too easy - i´m supposed to ´Use my imagination´

- Maybe I could paint a picture of myself MC´ing.
- Maybe I could knit you a pink sweater with two microphones.
- Maybe I could shove a mic in my mouth and pull it back out through my nose.
- Maybe I could shove a mic up your a** and pull it back out through my nose
- Or maybe.....

...shit - this is too hard for me... I just can´t figure it out.
i REALLY wanted some of those ´free underground beats´

Cape Town peeps need to pull together...lotta f***´n talent and some many ppl who can help each other out..

People who could be involved (if we think bigger picture)

- Konfab - ILL lyricist and him n bunch of other cats (incl. me) tryin to start up a production company - going into advertising  even that type of shit.
- Syntactc - obviously with GHFM connection

- DPlanet - a**suming you got mics and shit - thats one thing alot of cats still lacking - equip for good quality

- Dimitre n Damien - live just up the corner from marvel...got nice booth n mics n still starting out (more alternative shit) but i´m sure they wanna deal with anykinda work they can get + got connection to timecode who release shit overseas to Japan etc (where ´Broken" is doing f***in well)

- Sibot, Duncan, Wormstorm, Waddy (the other african dope cats) - Frequent marvel... starting to do dealership with this new york based magazine called ´frank´ - basically they gonna send up local shit for distribution in US n vice versa - including clothing etc. Plus...obviously they = tight producers n skilled mc´s djs (sometimes a bit anti-hip hop which is understandable with all the ´hating´ going on from the underground)

- Speak of clothing - if you wanna make something bigger you gotta go through all channels - my friend Julian ´Butan clothing´ and even Blaise´s "circus ninja" all are labels affiliated with hiphop through graffiti and stencil art n shit. Need to get some local artists or concepts on clothing... n apparently Circus Ninja gonna be distributed in states through African dope (with frank magazine). And Butan does clothing for UCT and all the res´s - getting much respect there - and uct is a HUUUGE market for hip hop (so many headz)

-Furthermore Julian, BUTAN´ is bringing out a free monthly event guide which is gonna be released in places like Musica...and even GQ... having signed up more upmarket places aswell - where we;re gonna have reviews of local CD´s n shit (which i´m gonna be in charge of) and space for interviews etc...
Cuz of this magazine he´s been meeting with EVERY major and minor club owner in personal capacity ´n shit - so we could throw alot of shit that way if we thinkin release parties or whuteva - perhaps even makin entrance fees cheaper and accessible to the less fortunate brethren if we get sponsorship from places like GHFM.... *hint* *hint* :)

- Godessa and their producer grenville and those cats also often come to marvel... they could be part of this... especially if we trying to involve more of the shit coming out of the Cape Flats which, it seems is still very segregated from the more ´black´ hip-hop aspects crews like ´Groundworx´ ´5th floor´ ´Archetypes´ and the ´whiteys´ (if you still wanna call it hip-hop or experimentation or whuteva) like sibot, waddy, wormstorm etc. We need to pull the sections together. Theres tight shit EVERYWHERE and we can help each other out.

-Blacknoise - already doing ALOT of shit- they could use some help and some mutual elevation. Also - Blacknoise n godessa n shit doin well overseas in places like sweden and holland, switzerland ´n shit....

- Then theres all the Dj´s like Rudy (remingtonsteel - who threw the fatbox party) n Klinikal, Hamma - Need to get some more parties going - speaking of which BUTAN (see above) been wanting to do a mean a** pure hip-hop party sponsored by him for a while...

-Furthermore - we got our homeboys like 37mph up in JHB with Ghettoruff - connections the bigger industry picture ´n artists like Zola, Zubz, Ishmael

Therz a bunch of other cats who really getting involved in industry in some from... from doing  well with films n shit getting released in NY.. makin beats themselves etc etc which i´m not gonna mention cuz I could go on and on...

As such...the resources  ARE there....just need to hook that shit up....

I been yappin to everyone for ages... n shit seems to be happening

You see... for example 20 years back (or so... forgot details) there was a place opposite marvel (before it existed) which was like a hot spot for local jazz etc. All kinds of peeps would come and show up - international jazzcats - like coltrane just cuz of its rep. That´s the idea with marvel (quite high aims) but we COULD make shit like that happen... s´all about agreements n supporting each other...

btw eesh: had any troubles getting up:)?

the procrastination continues

I work at marvel on saturdays...

the whole thing with em is they really ARE trying to push shit like that... They wanna be a venue where music connoseurs come to hang out. I mean shit...they just bought themselves a new vestax pmc-05.

The idea is that marvel develops a rep to the point where even international dj´s come down and like play a set - unanounced.

Basically the guys who are running it have quite a few ideas and are always amped for new input...

If we could get the word out that it´s the place for serious mc´s producers dj´s to hang out and hook-up "network" (and not only hiphop) (which it is to an extent) that would be ...in the words of my more alternatively minded brethren... ´kief´.

Should develop some ideas and i´ll put it to ´em.

I´m lovin track number 4 and 10 - Got a question...

I´m a**uming u produced both trax.

1. where the samples from for both? (Dont have to answer that.:))
2. on track number 10... what effect did you use... was it just a very full sample an you used a band filter to push through the melody? n..that "oh no aaah aah aah" (it kills me everytime) did you sequence it together or was it like that?

You know what... you can´t blame people for not knowing what is out there.
If you want to get someones attention you gotta BE in their face. And unfortunately.. the only way to deal with all these ´marketing/business´ cats is to speak their language... and know what captures their attention.

There are several problems at the moment... first one is quality.... unfortunately if a track is not ´up there´ with the rest of the international shit in terms of sound quality recording ... alot, I would say even most media channels simply will not play anything that aint up to ´what they call par´, because it might give the impression that it is their broadcast quality that is inferior.

These cats don´t realize how many talented muthafugga´s are out there doing shit with unique styles - flipping shit in another direction, both in terms of mc´ing and production. And this is partly out fault - tho it´s about to change.
The bubble is about to burst.

Up until the last few days I didn´t realize just how much talent there is out here.

All of a sudden in the last weeks i´ve been hit with all kinds of shit ppl like Xhosa Nostra in PE, the PTA UNLIMITED fro pic recs are doing (much respect to nyamz - i´m loving that ´damn I wish i wasnt such a wimp track)- f***´n tight - fresh inspirational and UNIQUE.... - ultimately thats one of the big things...if we wanna get somewhere people need to develop their own styles - those are the muthafuggas that get somewhere. Every MC and producer that stands out and is remembered has something - even if its small like a speech impediment or whuteva - bringing something new to the table.....

Then yesterday Syntactic played me this one track made in the Cape Flats by some producer called hype and mc (Kaleem or something)--- DAAAAAAAMN
These are people i had NEVER heard about before.
I was blown away....i literally sat speechless for about 5 repeats - breakin down the beat, the flow, lyrics etc..
---makin me think of common sense ´resurrection´ for some reason - it´s one of those tracks where the first time you hear it ´YOU KNOW´

I spend about 4 hours a day just listening to all kinds of shit...breaking all my favourite beats down in terms of structure always trying to figure out what it IS that makes THIS particular track ´magic´ and gives it some ´soul´ , ´energy´ or whatever the track has... so that I can reproduce it in my own shit... with my own style.

And damn......this track had IT....

So...the shit is THERE. There are hundreds of these cats out there that you never heard about.

People just need to get off their a** and GET TOGETHER. BUILD a NETWORk and fsckin WORK TOGETHER.
Cuz just makin a record is not enough---- you gotta have CONNECTIONS for distribution airplay etc. And for that people gottta hook up with each other - listen to each others shit and NOT HATE because someone else is better than you...but BE INSPIRED and LEARN from each other - develop a style together. Stop biting international shit.... bite or borrow (be inspired) by other local cats.... thats the only way we can get a totally unique south african sound.... and if we achieve that then the international market will listen because ´hey´ - ´look here is something FRESHHHHHHHHH´. Africa has ALL the funk baby.... Funk came from africa.

Start collaborating with cats.... make yourself heard.. hook up together...LEARN from each other - you can learn something from everyone....

One cat might be ill at at making drums sound tight - ,

another cat might excell at putting musical soul shit in there,

another cat might know the inside outs of sound production and how to make recordings sound good , how to sequence and structure

someone else might understand the bigger picture - business sense and creating platform to get yourself heard via the media so you can get your message across by throwing it into pplz faces.

then there´ll be a cat who runs parties and is looking for new shit

STOP FSCKIN RELYING OR HOPING ON THE MEDIA TO PULL YOU UP. ppl just sit back and bitch and moan about what ´the people up there like channel O are or are NOT doing. Man... all I can say is GET OFF YOUR FSCKING a** AND DO SOMETHING... phone someone up. SHIT DONT COME TO YOU YOU GOTTA TAKE IT AND MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Hiphop´s gotta do it for itself... and once we get our shit togther - then those further ´up there´ take notice and it IS starting to happen, but not because people are sitting back complaining - it is happening because people like Syntactic are out there trying to push things into the media, It is happening because producers like 37mph, Nyamz are out there working on their craft, becoming better and pushing it onto peeps. It is happening because ppl like KONFAB are developing their own styles and taking it into a new direction and trying to PULL people together - starting production companies speaking with people who are IN the business of advertising, media, distributon etc.

Much respect to those cats who get off their a**.

We need to create some more independant compilations... mixtapes and the such of the CREAM OF THE CROP of South african hip hop and other music (AKA LYRICIST LOUNGE). PUT that shit out there...because if it IS good enough it will be played and people WILL TAKE notice.... and once people take notice...so will ppl like Channel O - and then the deeper more raw shit becomes accessible too because people hear these compilations, they like the artists and then start looking for the artists´ other work... then the work of the artists who collaborated with them and featured with them... etc

Let´s make a f***ing compilation
