What do cats on AG think of this relatively new phenomenom predominantly Latin American sub-culture/ music genre known as Reggaeton?

I had the pleasure of partying with some Puerto Ricans on Puerto Rock day & I think I have gained a newfound respect/ appreciation of this sh*t..
Them RICANS DO IT BIG!

ROMPE ROMPE ROMPE!

I think if done correctly, it comes off nicely. Its kinda like the Rican Kwaito.Seriously is.Its str8 party but it has a vibe to it.What I dont like is the fact that almost everyone is cashing in on the style and watering it down.So it loses some of its spark. But when the Ricans do it, they do it nice.Like the Wyclef and Shakira "Jimmy Rivera sampled" Hips Dont Lie.What I dont like about this song though is the vocal mix.Its just so uneven.Works on my nerves when I listen to it critically like many other songs. But the melody is catchy.

Btw, its been speculated that Fruity is the core of all real Reggaeton tracks. :o

reggaeton will get any party started - but i just love them girls who shout what they hear on reggaeton tracks on some ROMPE or CULO tip!!!
one time heard these girls singing papi chulo by la factoria and me and my boys were laughing our a**es off. we asked them whether they knew what they were singing and they had no idea - when we told them they couldn't believe it.

but yeah reggaeton rocks - but not too much of it though!!!.

the original meaning is for when it breaks (in spain) - the street meaning of it is similar to making the a** go clap-clap, and it sometimes means bumping and grinding.

In that case "ROMPE ROMPE ROMPE!!!!"

Seriously though some hip hoppers in NY have been concerned by Reggaeton's emergence & its implications for hip hop...kinda like the reverse of the Msansi Hip Hop vs Kwaito arguement.

discuss..

The bigger question to debate is "are they all derivatives of hip hop?"

No need to be facetious mr. librarian.

I wouldn't call kwaito south african hip hop. Kwaito is a house-music derivative.

I politely disagree Mr Siren-addicted-Chickenhead    given that , & please correct me if I am wrong, Kwaito existed BEFORE the house music phenom in SA.
In fact the godfathers of Kwaito Mdu & Arthur have been known to refer to themselves as having hip hop roots.
I remember Arthur on Phat Joe live saying, paraphrasing here: "I was the first guy to rap commercially in SA"

kwaito is basically a mixture of differant genres hip hop being influenced in there somewhere but it def has the house influence we gotta remember house was way into effect before south african audiences grooved to it like now

Agreed. Kwaito is influenced by a lot of other genres Hip hop included & I think largely dominant. Take artists like Mapaputsi & Mzambiya (sp) etc for example. Could easily cla**ify their music as Hip Hop rather than Kwaito.

Just like Reggaeton is influenced by Hip Hop & Reggae.

Jiva Yo Yo = Reggaeton Latino!

Tsipa = Rompe  :twisted:
