The culture, that is Hip Hop, has evolved. The ever growing barrier breaking art form has found its way into the theatre.
With a very strong support base and interest from communities within the Arts sector, Artscape have opened their doors for the second consecutive year to embrace the Hip Hop Community.
The event will display on a truly unrivalled platform, for the second year running, some of the best independent developing Hip Hop talent in South Africa and neighbouring countries. Judging by the huge success in terms of crowd attendance and media coverage of last years production, this professional theatre performance will continue to attract the South African Hip Hop community in a space previously thought of as inaccessible.
The event provides a dynamic opportunity for developing artists to conduct demonstrations and exhibitions of their unique talents in an environment they have never performed before.
While last years show was predominantly focused on an exhibition of the different expressions of our very own South African experience of Hip Hop; this years event will centre more on using the elements/ disciplines of this culture within a theatrical environment. Thus making more use of individual characters to portray the wide array of our diverse cultural backgrounds in a smart and witty reflection on South African living. During the first production, audiences were lured into the daily trials and shenanigans of people in the Hip Hop Culture as they inhabit Hip Hop Avenue on the Cape Flats. This Avenue symbolized every street in Cape Town or Southern Africa if you like, whether you are in Mitchells Plain, Gugulethu, Nyanga or Yeoville, where ever you find Hip Hop. This year sees the concept of Hip Hop Avenue growing to a full-fledged metropolis called Hip Hop Capital. The generation of supporters of the culture has moved up into positions of power as the industry has developed and grown gaining world-wide popularity.
Artists such as Jitsvinger, Jbux, Original Accents, Endzi, Blakbox, Out Of Africa, South Africa Bboy champs , Ubuntu, and DJ White Knight are just a few who will bring the conceptualized Metropolis to life.
