Music Snobbery

I have encountered & indeed perpetuated music snobbery. This is where you can't really be down with the IN crowd unless you subscribe to a certain catalogue of music.
This extends to hip hop too especially in the context of "UNDAGROUND CATS" thinking they know better than everyone else & that someone is not "keeping it real" if they are not familiar with certain artists.

On some: "Yo what kind of head are you that doesn't know the whole Necro verse of track 8 of his 3rd CD.."

I say F*CK that "you don't own hip hop (herc brought it from Jamaica)"!
I will listen to any music I like! So what if I am not current with the latest hot & happening Def Jux release. So what if I have never heard an entire Def Jux album nor can I name the artists on the label?"
So what if I occasionally bump Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Moby, Maroon 5 & Nirvana?!

Don't get me wrong I can appreciate the importance of being familiar with some "definitive" releases. The so called "cornerstones" of the art. Your "Paid in Fulls; Fear of a Black Planets;Chronic; Enter the Wu; Southernplayalistics; Illmatics etc..
BUT music should not be an exclusive society of underground Connoisseurs on some 'uppety high society wine tasting poloshirt wearing golf club by Joburg Zoo Rosebank Primi's drinks having snobs'.

anyhow, hip hop is sooo vast its quite impossible to know all the details and ish. anyway its there for you to enjoy the music, not ancillary details

But back to the point. What's this thread about again? Snobbery. We should be more like Jamaicans,,, I got a tape with Killamanjaro clashing some other sound - Ricky Trooper played Abba's 'Super Trooper' just cause they sing the word 'Trooper'. Ain't no one gonna tell Ricky Trooper he's gone soft.

My point is that Jamaicans aren't snobby when it comes to music,,, hardcore soundsystems still play commercial mashups in their sets.
