BACK TO THE CITY is to celebrate hip hop and urban culture through a day of live performances, street art, extreme sports and exhibitions with the aim of bringing the ma**es back to the city. The festival marks the first of its kind and sets the wheels in motion for an ongoing discourse amongst artists, organizers, contributors, ma** media and audiences.
The day will feature artists/ performers representing the pinnacle of artistic expression from South Africa's independent and mainstream hip-hop and urban culture.
Aside from being entertained audiences will get to attend a workshop, inside RITUAL STORES, hosted by the British Council offering an exchange of knowledge. Individuals working in the ma** media industry will cover topics such as publishing, distribution, recording, music videos, independent vs mainstream, funding, entrepreneurship and advertising. The workshops will allow a pa**ing of information and knowledge in order to facilitate access to resources. Such a workshop will empower the participants and encourage an investment into those who exemplify the hip-hop spirit.
Live performances and dj's will entertain the audience while graffiti crews will each get a highway pillar to create a concept around the theme –
BACK TO THE CITY which should bring back colour to the city. Skateboarding and BMX ramps will be erected to display the additional element of street culture.
RITUAL STORES, besides the workshop, will host a fine art & digital art which will feature an array of artists exposing the wealth of talent that exists amongst our communities. The art pieces displayed will be sold alongside the RITUAL STORE merchandise.
