This has made news in the last 3weeks in the US.

CBS/AP) CBS announced Thursday that it has fired Don Imus from his radio program, following a week of uproar over the radio host's derogatory comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team.

Imus found himself at the center of a storm after he called members of the Rutgers team "nappy-headed hos" last week. Protests ensued, and one by one, numerous sponsors pulled their ads from Imus' show. On Wednesday, MSNBC dropped its simulcast of the program.

It brings up an interesting debate.

The age old debate of what is considered a beautiful African/ black woman?

Over & over again we are bombarded with images (what up Deac?  :wink: ) of black women with straightened hair. Weaves. Dark & Lovely Relaxer. Wigs.
Who are the universally accepted "good looking black women"?
Beyonce/ Ciara (?)/ Nandipa from Isidingo (?)/ Gabrielle Union/ Tyra Banks/ Hale Berry/ those Channel O girls (?)/ Our Beauty Queens etc. (Deac pictures please).
Do all these sisters not have more caucasian features? At least the hair?

How does that affect the psyche of our sisters? Are they conditioned to think that is what they have to look like to be considered beautiful?

When you look at the basketball team of ladies in question NONE of them have "nappy" hair. All of them have weaves/ relaxed/ straightened hair.
It looks like they too have rejected their natural hair.

How does it affect our brothers? Are we not conditioned by the same white owned media the same way? Believing that is what a "hot girl" should look like? If we think like that then surely that will cause our sisters to further regress & conform to said unnatural beauty standards.

Have we been conditioned to reject our naturally "Nappy" hair to the point where we hate it so much we do unnatural things to change it to look like the other (wo)man's?

I want to hear especially from the sisters.

I could be silly in thinking this, but maybe not. Would'nt it be correct to take this same line of questioning & ask:

1. Before the "other" (wo)man's fashion touched these shores: bras, pantihose, jeans, lingerie... These things were not considered to be things that bring out the beauty that the women already have. HOWEVER, by wearing these pieces of fashion, are our ladies denying their "true"  beauty?

My point is, the "weaves" to me are'nt perfomring the function of the woman denying her "true" beauty, it's just perfoming the same function that other fashion items are doing, and that's accentuating (sp) the beauty that's already there...I mean, it does'nt mean u're automatically fly when u rock a weave. Sometimes it does'nt work coz well, u know what I'm getting at....Basically it's not a denial thing, just like fashion goes in circles...Fros will be back like bell-bottoms once came back. Does'nt mean before they're back the ladies are "denying their beauty".  

When a brother is damn near gagging at natural hair based style..then it's the brother with some issues he needs to iron out.

Personally I never liked the whole weave shit, just doesn't appeal to me. I dont mind dreadlocks or natural nappy hair, cos mine is kinda nappy too, as long as a lady keeps it neat it not a problem. Relaxed or not it doesn't matter to me. Just hate weaves.

One of my friends once rejected a chick cos she didn't have straight hair, she just happened to be one of the hottest and most intelligent girls I've ever met, so I find this kinda shit stupid to say the least.

Yeah, its a tricky one. I just hate weaves man! they are so artificial, and its even worse when the honey doesnt get the thing done right either. You see the shiney straight plastic hair on top with the grimey nappy locks at the back of the head...talk about contrast!!! But tng raised a good point there. Its not just the hair thing that is contributing to the whole plastic and artificial woman thing with the sisters, but their accessories and even sometimes the way they dress! It makes me realise that us guys are just as artificial in a sense. Could be very difficult trying to draw the line between keeping it real as an african and living the way we have been brainwashed to live. Sorry for hi-jacking your thread tate! I got paid to write an article about this 3 years ago.
I say do what you please long as it looks good but personally I won't relax my hair, I've never had a weave, I just can't get myself to.  I was teased in the first few years of high school coz of my nappy do, I had these nappy pigtails all the time, still have a pic, this prolly led me to relax it  but I chopped off  in hair std 9 coz I didn't give a phuck what anyone said anymore, relaxed it again second year of varsity, chopped it off again and since then I've had my kinky do, tate doesn't belive its real tho.
I got that good hair, its soft and curly and everyone likes to stare at it on some is that ur real hair? It just takes a whole lotta maintenance tho.

I don't mind braids, keeps my hair easy to manage.

If guys don't look my way coz of my hair do, all the better for me, less pricks to deal with.

sorry babes. loss of focus. the intention was there. it was just interesting to listen to the fellas for a while.

you now what. ive done it all. ive seriously just done it all. its been relaxed. coloured. s curl. no hair completly. relax and bob cut. braids. weave. curly weave. straight weave. and a great deal of experience its gained me. for myself. in my own little life on this particular topic.

and my thoughts. its just not good enough to base judgements of people based on thier hair. it can infact be a big mistake. where ive been. no hair has been the best and true reflection of ones character. take me for instance. i know that there was a time when i was not good enough for the scene coz i was the girl who at some point did not fit the bill. that the changes i was going through as person would determine who and what i am intrinsically. i look back using myself as the yardstick and say that now. ill tell you its nonsensical.

it may be about conditioning but not completely. yes some people may be drawn to long hair because its all they see. all they are fed through media. and thus what they a**ume to be the acceptable codes of beauty in society. so yes the pressure is there. with the a**umption that men like us light and thin and with long manageable hair. and not just beauty seemingly we are also conditioned into believing that certain hairstyles immediately allude to certain personality traits.

but in some cases people have choices. and people want to experience different aspects of themselves at different points in their lives. that to me is the bottom line. some choose may choose consistency and some may choose change. its only what people choose for themselves. and the motivations themselves differ. i do not believe it ALWAYS necessarily makes one girl better than the next. i think thats silly. and its limited. and thats the only angle i view it from in terms of how brothers relate to us in that regard. but then again people have preferences and they have a right to that. a beautiful girl is cool. with some kind of a hairstyle. she may be thin. she may not be. the mind. there is a mind aswell there. and i also feel that it would do a great deal towards women unfolding if our men encouraged that aspect of us. so that it could be a relevant part of who we are. to actually engage with the spirit and the mind. the most important question for me. is what are you dealing with. who is that person. i belive that is the challenge our times brings to us. to start choosing for ourselves over and above what we know. what our friends thinks is cool. what our clique thinks. what the magazines think (hey look. its nice to page through glossies and see pretty thing. and choose which ones appeal to me most and why actually). if we are to trully transcend then its in the little things. everyday. every single day. make your choice. just know why athst all. we are here to live and experience ourselves through our own eyes. as we wish.

my hair is natural now. and i love and appreciate it most deeply. i adore it. and im proud of it. nurture it. but i got here because it is what i wanted for myself at a particular moment in my life. and it enriches me. is a part of me. and it teaches me too. grounds me. i have found a spiritual wholeness now.
i definetly think a lot more could be done to encourage a love of natural hair. as a lifestyle choice. just so people see it as a choice thats okay and beautiful and worth making. but it is not the be all end all.
