Major labels have cheapened their product (and it is a 'product', not art) so much by focusing on lowest common denominator 'hits' that people don't want to pay for it any more.
Majors are engineering their own demise because the music they put out is disposable, holding no intrinsic value beyond it's short shelf life as a 'hit'.
Why would anyone want to pay for something that they are going to hear in heavy rotation on radio, MTV and in clubs, knowing that in two months time they'll never listen to it again.
