On the 29th of thsi month (March) Millions of voters in Zimbabwe will head to the polls to vote for a (new) president.
A colleague in the newsroom tells me, that Mugabe has barred Western countries from sending observers. Which is all very well as long as African and other observers are allowed but what irks me is him throwing out statements like There will never be regime change in Zimbabwe and the minister of prisons ordering his officers to vote for Zanu PF.

Is there anyone based in  Zim who can give us a more accurate picture as to what's going on, on the ground?

I'm not entirely sure why Mugabe even bothers holding elections. Surely it can't be to keep up the image of a democracy? What's the point?

what kind of economic policies are these candidates proposing? because there is a trend in society and media is also guilty of this, that of discussing politicians (personalities) and leave out the policies. Tell me how is that different from reading a tabloid on same issue?  this was the case before and after Polokwane. yes there was an attempt to do that but was not as strong as that of dicussing personalities. I think its gonna be the same with Zim elections. We need to know both the politicians and their economic policies for us (the audiences) to make informed choices.

This is not an attack on any media house...

WASTE OF TIME. MAKONI & MDC HAVE NO CHANCE @ ALL. they should not legitimise Mugabe's reign by participating in sham elections. By having other parties on the ballot paper, ZANU can claim they are running a democracy.

Sound familiar?...

This election will be decided by the rural vote which Zanu PF traditionally has the stronghold on:

Many analysts however, still believe that the rural areas will determine who gets the presidential post as more than 60 percent of the voters live in the rural areas

The appeal of Zanu PF in the rural areas is due to the revolutionary liberator status (much like ANC) + Rural areas are not as affected by the urban problems of Electricity & Water outages, HYPER-Inflation etc.
If you are devoid of all those crises & laced with the usual promises of food aid & basic commodity price controls then Zanu PF suddenly doesn't seem as bad to the average rural voter.

HECTIC article and outsiders view on SA. It's sensational but makes one wonder where we are headed.

Dont you know Bob is never going to die. He will outlive you and your kids. I heard he runs 50 laps around the State House every morning.

But seriously.. Whatever happens.. I hope it brings positive change to Zim. Its never nice seeing fellow Africans suffer.
