What exactly is a perfect mix/mastered track?

mixing and mastering are two completely different things.

mixing is getting the relative levels of the parts in the right balance (which is a highly subjective thing usually decided by the producer and the artist).

mastering is about dynamics, optimising the sound, making it more punchy, warm, and full, while raising the overall level (volume) and highlighting details that aren't already apparent.

Brian Gardner at Bernie Grundman is a mastering don. It doesn't get much better than that.

I would say a lot of the problem with SA hip hop is the mixing and EQing, not the mastering. Not many of us are working in multi-million dollar studios either. Having said that, I'm happy with Planetary a**ault.

I'm going to take the track I just did with Wordsworth to a specialist mastering studio to see if I can squeeze out some extra quality.

Honestly I don't give two flying ducks whose album is mixed and mastered the dopest, the most important thing is how much money do these cats make off they albums, mixtapes etc.

Y'all can argue all you want, the average man on the street... at least the consumer doesn't care whose album is mastered better than whose because it's irrelevant when it comes to sales.

This is a crappy thread... no f***ing point at all. Y'all gonna brag about what you think is dope and what's not, rubbish... piece of crap if you ask me.

I dont think its a crappy thread. If you think so that is fine, that is your opinion, your entitled to it. Their lots of things on AG, that you will not appreciate, for your own health i suggest next time you just move along and save yourself the unnecesary.

I think its great that people will create threads like this, because there are people out there including myself who appreciate the dynamics of a perfectly mixed and mastered song. A thread like this shows that people are listening to those things. So the next time I mix a song, or someone else who's read this thread, i will have it in my mind that their people out there comparing my work to Tony Dawsey or Eddie Sancho etc.

I think that sort of thing is good for the industry. Just my opinion.

Maybe for you man, I don't wanna make this a Naymbz VS Universal thread, like you said I'm entitled to my opinion and you to yours.

Otherwise, I stand my ground because whether you love it or hate it, the consumer doesn't care much about how dope the mastering/mixing of someones album is as long as they feel it. Maybe all the best sellers are dope mastered albums  ;) the Billboard Chart toppers included.

NOTE: I'm by no means saying that an album's mastering is not important, I'm sure you get my point.

Peace.

mastering is one of those things that people (ie. consumers) only notice when it's done badly.

consumers may not know (or care) very much about it, but their ears have been trained by listening to high quality production over the years. when they hear a badly produced street mixtape they are automatically gonna think it's bad 'quality' even if they like some of the tracks.

you can't underestimate the psychological effect of bad production on the perception overall quality. that's one of the reasons i never play unfinished tracks to anyone other than producers who can imagine what the track will sound like when it's finished.

I have been feeding-off a cat by the name of Bob Power (Mixer, Producer, Musician ......list goes on) www.bobpower.com}. He worked with the likes of D' - Ms Badu - Common to name a few.  His discography says it all

I cosign - mix, mastering mos def holds serious weight in a track and badly done - consumers will undoubtedly give a care.

i do agree......this are 1 of the main reasons i joined AG..as a beatmaker/producer i feel  that i need to expand and in order to do this i have to learn from wat others know and understand...not forgetting thru trial and error.
do also note that this is how all the greatest producers out there learnt and developed there style....either u studied sound engineering or not....

Oh man, talking of mastering...

Evanescence may be a truly crap band, but they have at least one monumental track: the full band version of My Immortal.

Find a decent pair of monitors. Sit way back, turn the volume up, and let the track play. Wait 'til the drums and guitar kick in for the final hook...

OOOOOHHH SHIIIIT!!!

It must rank as one of the most intensely perfect masters ever recorded. Just this f***ing swelling, rolling, huge ocean of perfect sound hits you right between the eyes. Unbelievable.

Don't know who did it, but they are genius.

I always liked Jay-Z's album mastering. They're done by a dude called Tony Dawsey who always does a great job.
