I think Hip Hop goes in Era's:
1979 - 1986 The Pioneer Era (not to be confused with Pioneer Unit  ;) )
1986 - 1991: The Golden Era - See: the rise of lyricism, political conciousness etc
1991 - 1994: The Renaissance Era - See: Pushing the creative envelop of traditional "hip hop"  with Jazzy Hip Hop Movement, Rise of West Coast Gangsta rap G Funk.
1995 - 1999: The Commercial Era. Hip Hop is fully gone mainstream, the rise of jiggy hip hop.
2000 - 2007: ???
