All this talk of jerking off dogs and sniffing panties, while no doubt edifying, is actually a little pointless.

So anyway...

What makes a good live hip-hop show? What makes a bad one? Examples?

personally i well thought out show where the tracks they do flow into each other - not just randomly doing songs, engaging with the audience busta rhymes show was dope him and spliff perform well together, jay-z's show as well as well as snoop doggs shows here were dope... i was also impressed by pharrells set. he had 2 live drum sets complimenting each other very well.

lauryn hills show here was very bad... she did tracks off that mtv live disc most of us were ready for some of that doo wop shit the old lauryn... so i guess knowing what the audience is expecting and exceeding that, giving them what they know, want and more.. thats me

Cosign. Busta and Jay were crazy. Lauryn Hill was absolutely sodding awful; textbook case of not knowing or caring what your audience wants. We didn't pay R400 to come stand for hours in a cold building to watch you sit down and play acoustic guitar. We came for that Doo Wop, that Everything is Everything.

Tumi and the Volume and Zubz have always had great live shows. The live musician element really works well. Even HHP's getting into it - you haven't lived until you've heard the 20 minute jazz version of Tswaka.

Selection of tracks for your set, like black-child said there are tracks that dont flow into each, for instance cats shud avoid doing bumpy tracks, getting the crowd all hyped up then doing a slow boring loving song. Rather make the relaxed tracks first then pick up.... Interact with the crowd, Prokid does that best....

An example of a bad live act wud be a cat that rocks up all by himself with no dj and ask who ever is the dj box to skip to number 3 and when the song starts he be on sum nah nah nah number 4... Shit makes me lose interest...

Bad sound. There's nothing I hate more than going to a hip hop show and you can't hear a word. Even though I know the track I still wanna hear you spit.

Cosign!

I hate it when these guys make us rhyme or sing to half their tracks tho. Yes, we know the track, but we aint there to see them shove a mic towards us for more than a minute and all they do is grin as they bump their head >:(

Or when they spend 90% of the time talking shit. Saw Immortal Technique last week and although his track selection was great and his freestyles were CRAZY, he must have spent just as much time spouting incoherent political rhetoric as he did rapping. Not what I came to see.

Supremacy from Grahamstown have a great live show. Nice and tight, good crowd interaction. They have fun on stage too, take the piss out of each other.

Ha. Baldi, four words: "Can I kick it?"

Most overused live gimmick ever.
