Yeah, I do feel Mzekezeke because him and Brown Dash still have that creative
local style of Kwaito while the now "House" DJs have gone for a more European
angle. I admire Sbu, T'zozo and Professor, Cleo, and Brothers of Peace for doing
African House music but it's already been done. Masters of Work (who are Dominican-American) and other US and European DJs have blended the
Afro-Latin flavor in House music for ages. And if I want Afrobeat rhythems,
I could listen to a Nigerian artist, not a South African one (not saying South
African can't do Afrobeat but I'm just saying, the Afro-House thing has already
been done). And Kwaito was the next best thing since Afro-House.
With Kwaito dividing, as I mentioned, it reminded me of how comparable it is to
the state of UK Garage. Garage which also had it's roots in House music is now
divided into 2 scenes now, Grime (more of a Hip-Hop sound) and Dubstep (Drum
and Ba** and Dub sound). The House element is still there but you only hear
very little of it.
Just as Kwaito rappers wanted to do Hip Hop back in the days, Garage artists
origionally wanted to Hip Hop or Drum and Ba**. Dizzee Rascal, Wiley, Oxide,
Neutrino, DJ Zinc and Skibbadee, were into Drum and Ba** while Asher D, Kano,
Lethal B, Shystie, and Lady Soverign wanted to do Hip-Hop but ended up doing
UKG because it was popular during the late 90s-early 2000s.
