nullVarious Artists - Cashless Society Presents African Raw Material Vol.1International Hip-Hop doesn’t get a lot of play in North America but that’s not due to lack of talent. Enough time has past for Hip-Hop scenes worldwide to come into their own. Mind you not all have (by a long shot). But a good scout of talent is Hip-Hop icon Bobbito, and his Fondle ‘Em Records (RIP) put out a fresh split 12” by Cashless Society and Mizchif, both South African acts. So, when we got the chance to peep both’s sound a few years after the fact, we jumped at it. This compilation is a Cashless Society project and features a bunch of South (slang for South Africa) heads. What is noticeable right away is the throwback feel of the energy in African Hip-Hop. These cats don’t sound ‘93, they exude the energy of LONS, Y’all So Stupid and Pharcyde. The single Hottentot Hop Bantu 1, 2 has the flave you might have forgot could be produced by hungry emcees. The posse cut Bring It On arcs electricity through the speakers, while Taxi Wars speaks of the real-life violence between competing taxi companies in Johannesburg. In New York the cabbies might do some racial profiling but at least they don’t try to kill each other for your business. The freestyle session Live @ Jumpin Jack, backed by a lil’ human beatbox, carries on like the jiggy era never happened, with one emcee sounding almost offended when his man asks him if he’s gonna rip. The beats here are solid throughout and exceptional on tracks like Mr. Forgetful and Stuck. The lyrics weaken in spots, but when you’re getting someone’s expressionfrom such a different perspective it’s probably better not to criticise. You need something new? Go the distance and dig out African Raw Material.
