Now I've got respect for mixtape DJs. It takes a lot of work to make a dope tape (or CD, or download, or whatever...) but I'm continually confused about the techniques some of them adopt.
What I want to know is where some of these come from and what their purpose is:
- Shouting over tracks continually. You're a DJ. Shut the f*** up!
- Rewinding the beginning of the song or a single, nondescript line ad infinitum, so by the time the track starts proper you're at the two minute mark
- Track 'snippets'. This is is just f***ing annoying.
- Scratching in sound clips over verses or hooks. These clips bare little or no relation to the music
- Putting unmastered, barely mixed 'exclusive' joints out.
Why do these happen? Irritatingly, Papercutt seems to have adopted most of them, as have a few other SA DJs (Kenny, I'm looking at you...)
