i expected him to rap and to rap his hit songs on top of it. he almost sang the entire performance. the Ms Fat Booty version that he did was not everage. was not there to hear him sing the entire performance. not very pleased at!

Most ppl thought that he's gonna perform...his popular songs like Travellin Man, Brown Skin Lady, and so on.
They thought that he's gonna be doing it Hip Hop style, but he was there for Jazzy Grooves

He did Ms Fatty Booty..in a Jazz tip though, he did Umi Says and The Boogie Man Song

Just that I don't know whether he still deserve to be label as a Hip Hop cat

Most ppl thought that he's gonna perform...his popular songs like Travellin Man, Brown Skin Lady, and so on.
They thought that he's gonna be doing it Hip Hop style, but he was there for Jazzy Grooves

I think we need to change our mindsets.
Obviously caused by two factors, one the local hip hop acts who never release enough material so whenever we see them they are bound to sing our favourites.
And two we wait so long for cats like Mos Def that when they get here they're in a different place or mindset in their career.

I gave up on hearing even stuff from the Black on Both sides (nevermind Blackstar) after three songs, not only was it obvious that they weren't coming, but he is also a magnetic, utterly impressive and effortless performer, fortunately for me I might catch him again on Thursday so I can get some hip hop but from what I experienced the cat was born to this and it was worth the money, trip to Cape Town.

If anyone had done their research they shouldn't have been disappointed. It's a Jazz Festival. He's performing with the The Robert Glasper Experiment - to expect him to just rap his old tracks is a bit silly.

Travellin' Man came out in 1998. It's 2009. Surely you don't just want to hear artists performing their old joints? We usually get washed-out artists coming to SA to perform their golden oldies. It makes a nice change to see some brand new shit.

To me his show was pure hip hop taken to another level. Mos Def's been rapping for 12 years. Wouldn't it be boring if he just kept spitting 2 or 3 x 16 bars on every track?
