On the 12th May 2003 Tonderai Ernest Makoni's physical presence left us in a way that has been difficult for us as a family to come to terms with. Tondi, as we affectionately called him is sorely missed; however in the last six years I have learnt that comfort and solace oft-times come from the most unlikely sources. The hundreds of emails and letters we have received over the years from people inspired by Tondi’s music and life have sometimes brought me to tears; though we lost our brother and my parents their son – his love returns tenfold through his audience and listeners, some new to his music and many ardent followers. You will note I do not refer to Kingpin’s audience as ‘fans’. I find the word vulgar especially since those who write or communicate with me often convey an admiration and love for him that transcends the crude descriptive word – ‘fan’. I feel close to you, you are my extended family; you have brought me solace in dark times even without your knowledge.
To celebrate Tondi’s life together with you – his friends and family, I have mixed some music to help us commemorate him in a small way. I have put together some music we used to enjoy together and some that reminds me of him in many different ways, I hope you take this journey with me and celebrate Tonderai Ernest Makoni - Kingpin 25 March 1980 – 12 May 2003.
